  • In this video, I get into the internals of the 450 to do a valve adjustment. As you will find out in the video, they were definitely not within spec. Hope you all are enjoying the content. Thanks for watching!

Glad to hear your back is better! To me when people think they are rambling they are not. I feel that giving more information is better. It helps people who may not know learn and for those that do can weed out that info or reconfirms what the have learned.

Thanks for the video! Just picked up my 2009 trx450er and the same intake valve has just about the same clearance yours does lol. Mind had a 1.5 shim in it, going to try to pick up a few smaller shims and go from there!

    Forgot the decompression clearance.
    It’s PLUS (+) .15mm
So the clearance would be for the decompression rocker arm is 0.43mm
    .28mm + .15mm = .43mm
Since u left ur right side EXHAUST clearance at .30mm, add (+) .15mm = 0.45mm for the decompression arm

How is it running now? My only fear for you is that once the intake valves close up that tight it is usually a tall tale sign of the valves starting to cup. Very common amongst all the 450's when a tiny bit of dust/dirt gets through. You guys seem to be on top of your maintenance but the previous owner might not have been. If it closes back up to near zero tolerance in the next few rides don't try to adjust them again, pull the head and send it off. I know a few shops that do excellent work with quick turn around if you don't have any year you.
Also- great informative video as always. This will surely help others in the future.

I’ve actually got new intake valves on the way. The current ones are pretty much out of adjustment. I went ahead and put it back together because I wanted to make sure this fixed my starting issue which it definitely did. I think my dad is gonna do some riding this evening to make sure it is running good overall. Then once the intake valves come in, I will pull the head off, inspect it, and get those fixed up.

@@TylerMcNabb137 Good deal, sounds like you are way ahead of the ball. You will need to have a machine shop re-cut the valve seats before the new valves go in. Isn't too expensive either. If you send the head along with the new valves to TLR Performance down here in Sebastian, FL Todd will cut the seats, install the valves, and shim them for you on his bench. All you have to do when you get the head back is bolt it on and go.

@@PatrickRiggs33 sweet thanks for the advice! I’m hoping I don’t have to do too much to the motor because my plan is to do a full rebuild from top to bottom of the motor this winter. Don’t want to have to replace things multiple times if I don’t have to.

@@TylerMcNabb137 Cylinder head isn't too invasive, quick turn and burn project! Have fun and keep up the great content.

Correct me if I'm wrong, isn't it 0.06 on the intake valves/ .011 on the exhaust valves. +or- .01? Not 0.16 on the intake?

You mentioned 24v 2 battery system. Why? Just got a 450er and getting ready to do a carb rebuild and adjust valves. But curious about the 2 batteries.

Really the main purpose is just for quicker starting with xc racing. Plus it gives you a little more juice when cranking. If your not xc racing, there’s really no reason to do it. In fact it’s actually harder on the starter so I wouldn’t recommend it unless it was for racing purposes.

What was the clearance for your decompression arm?

I honestly can’t remember. If I remember right though it was either in spec or actually a little loose. It wasn’t tight like I originally thought.

Wow very nice bike … question? What Jets are y running ? Also that air box looks cool… what type of air box is that ?

    • @TylerMcNabb137
      @TylerMcNabb137  Рік тому

I don’t remember 100% but I believe it is a 45 pilot, and 170 or 172 main jet. Then the airbox is just stock but it’s got an outerwear cover installed into the lid.

They sit inside the top of the valve spring retainer.
