    I'm a hundred percent disabled vet so all my income comes from on taxable disability from the VA. This tax credit screws me over because I'm not making an income that's a taxable income so if I tried to get solar panels it wouldn't help me at all. You have to get creative. What you do is change your status to exempt so taxes aren't taken out. Save the money that would've been taken out. When you file, you'll owe, so then the solar credit is applied and you pay the rest out of pocket. Change your tax status back to whatever you were claiming before. Take this as guidance, Always talk with an accountant. This is what I am going to ask my accountant if there's any issue.

    • @bradleyjensen4787
      @bradleyjensen4787 Рік тому +6

      The Solar is a credit not a deduction they are different.
      Deductions reduce taxable income. Credits reduce actual tax liability.
      Example- you make 50,000
      You take standard deduction of $12500
      Now your taxable income is $47500
      Uncle same says you owe $6000 in taxes
      That $6000 is your tax liability. The solar credit could be used to reduce that directly.
      Assuming you had a $12000 tax credit the remaining $6000 would roll to the next year.

    I'm not a CPA but it's not that hard to understand, maybe because I sold cars. I'll use EVs (electric vehicles) to make it simple. What most don't understand is you have a choice on how to use your credit BUT it has to be in accordance. When I sold Kias, there was a $7,500 tax credit. We would automatically apply it to the purchase of the vehicle unless a customer asked for something different. It isn't free money as some people see it as. Since the credit is for solar, you can either use it for owed taxes or directly into your solar system. It's basically you asking for them to cash out the same way you can if you have leftover credits on a utility or cellphone bill. Even easier example is cashing out your PTO at the end of the year. However, most people are bamboozled into just rolling it over each year and won't request a cash out.

    • @GoGreenPost

      You would get the credit amount by subtracting it from the amount of federal income tax you pay that year. To be clear, a “refund” in tax lingo means you get the amount back. For example you may get it as a check. However, I’ve noticed that many people, including solar sales people use the word refund interchangeably with tax credit. Quite funny/sad/wtf story as city of Decatur sky rocketed in price investors from every ware came out of the woodwork taking advantage of lots of elderly people paying nowhere near what the tear down and put up a huge house price for thier property was worth so what did they do beefed up the building inspection office and on the lookout for revenue not protecting fixed income elderly on a fixed income I was paying about $600 a month to live there but some of the folks a lot had been thier all thier lives house was paid off a long time ago and utilities sky rocketed out of control I was young I fixed mine up put an addition on and told as many people as I could what thier property was worth and at very least clean up the structure you even though they will tear it down and throw it the land fill or you will lose around $30-50.000 it’s so freaking silly as well as wasting that old heart pine and oak 2x6s to me is like a freaking sin. sound to me like credit not rebate you need to go negative on fed. Best way to do that is changing dependents
      or going exempt a few months. to make sure you owe at the end of the year. You put more cash in you pocket through your checks. lest say you owe -5k for 2023 taxes. you will still have 12k solar rebate to roll over the following year. repeat the process. thats what I will be doing also consult your tax professional. Hope that helps.

      If youve paid 30k in federal income tax and get18k from the solar tax incentive, you will not get a refund for that 18k. You would have to exempt the 18k from your fed income tax or increase your dependents on your w4, if you are a w2 employee, in order to get the solar credit. Again consult with your tax advisor, this is not professional advice.

      Sort of, but not exactly …you’ll get a credit towards your taxes and because of that you won’t have to pay out of your own pocket. That leaves you with more money that you can use towards the loan.

      @GoGreenPost why does my solar company say my solar payment will go up based on how much credit I use? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using the credit

      Because that money is supposed to go back to the cost of the system. That’s why the government gave you the incentive to make solar more affordable for homeowners like yourself. If you would not have went solar you would have never got that $

    If you have a past tax liability owed of 18k in 2022, get solar installed in 2023 with a tax credit of 16k and claim that credit in 2023, can that tax credit be used towards the prior years remaining tax liability from 2022?

    Can I do this on my boat ? If so, When I go to fill out form 5695 it asks for an address. Do I just put the address where my boat is ? Thanks for any help.

    So if I owed 34$ last year. Solar would or wouldn’t help me ..? It says it’s not refundable but you can apply to federal income taxes. I can or can’t use it on the 14k that gets taken out my paychecks year round ..? I only owed 34$ after the taxes on my w-2 were input.

    You have to be careful. You are incorrect; you cannot apply this credit to W2 taxes already paid. Check form 5695 and the renewable energy worksheet if you think otherwise.

      Dan, you are flat out wrong. Check the dept of energy’s homeowners guide to tax credit for a pv. Common asked questions: you can get a refund at the end of the year due to the tax credit, if the reduction in tax liability means there was an overpayment for the year.

      Funds aren’t limited on the credit correct?

    • @GoGreenPost
      @GoGreenPost  Рік тому

      In terms of how much you can get? No, there is no limit to how much you can get. However, the amount you will qualify for will be determined by the size/cost of your system. So if you only need a small system, you’ll qualify for less than someone with a larger, more expensive system. In addition, just because you qualify for a certain amount doesn’t mean your tax liability will be high enough to use it all.
