Wooden bowling ball trivia: - They were made from a wood called Lignum vitae, Latin for "wood of life". Resin from Lignum vitae was used to treat various ailments. -Lignum vitae is native to the Caribbean islands and northern coast of South America. Sometimes called Ironwood (a name shared with other species) it is a very dense and durable wood. A Lignum vitae bowling ball of maximum regulation size would weigh a little under 15 pounds. -The slow-growing trees of genus Guaiacum produce Lignum vitae and are now considered an endangered species. The bowling environment of 100+ years ago was very different from today. Wood lanes then were coated with shellac and were not oiled. Shellac was waxed. The natural oily resin in Lignum vitae would eventually dry up. To help prevent chipping oil was applied to the ball. Wooden bowling balls were used exclusively until 1905, when the Evertrue rubber bowling ball was first produced. In 1914 Brunswick introduced the Mineralite and quickly became the leading bowling ball manufacturer.
I would add that because of its hardness and naturally oily properties, lignum vitae used to be used in naval applications like the bearings for propeller shafts in ships and I believe also early subs. Also, it's so dense it sinks in water.
Packy's ball likely started out spherical or at least more-so than it is now. Wood being a natural product has a tendency to move a bit with the seasons as it takes on and expels moisture with humidity changes so it probably got its watermelon shape gradually over many years.
This was cool. Bro I still use my white LInds from 1985! Can't part with them. Soles are still in great shape. So don't be making fun of Linds bro!!! 🤣
Realistically, with how the watermelon wood ball is shaped, could you just make a modern day bowling ball using it as a core? The process would be brutal I'd imagine but I have to wonder
hey i just got a new ball the !Q ruby and i wanna now if it a good ball i’m 13 i got a 174 and 180 first game with it but i’m kinda all over the place with the ball any tips
Awesome video shedding some light on bowling ball history. Does anyone have any leads on bowling culture 150 years ago? Not much out there. Was super curious on averages, etc. The progression is obvious, however not much to find until the 1940's on league averages of the times. Already a sub. Great content.
Anyone knows who determined bowling lanes should be 60 feet long and not, for example, 62 feet or 55 feet long? Also how was it determined that a strike value should be based on the results of the next 2 frames thrown as opposed to the next 3 frames or 4 frames thrown? There's hardly anything in the history of bowling that gives those kind of details.
Packy I have a question it I average over 200 over 12 weeks in my local league can I go to a regional event that's what it said on the pba website can you give me more information or anything about that and I don't know if my bowling center is one of the 300 or if that matters anymore information would be helpful thanks I'm close to 200 average
I love throwing around 150 year old wood
Hahaha
Brandon is crazy accurate. His spare shots were on point. Good tries on all the splits
Pack is the most creative bowling channel out there
Trying to always get more creative 😁
I dunno 220 might give em a run for his money. French fries in a bowling ball 😂. Both are fantastic though
9:30 That's that WOOD CARRY!

There's something so wholesome about watching Packy just having fun
Someone needs to make a wood bowling ball with an asymmetrical core.
I do need to make one 😈
Throwing huge brown M&Ms is crazy. Digging the content.
Yeah I'd rather eat them
0:08 How heavy are these wooden buildings your throwing? 😂
What would have been par for the course was Brandon getting that double, then big 4 for that 6 count he needed to win.
You could give Packy ANY ball and he would strike with it
Packy with the consistent quality content! Love you vids
Appreciate the compliment ❤️❤️
Nice showing Brandon!
It would have been cool to see Packy shoot 200 with the wood ball٫ he was so close that I was praying that he would shoot 200
Packy yours look like it’s galloping down the lane 😂😂
Next step has to be throwing a frozen turkey down a lane. "Tis the season...
Tis the season!!
Another great show Packy, love it, keep it up bro.. 😂
You should commission someone to make a new wooden ball with modern grip. It would be interesting to see how that works in comparison.
They can put a core in wood those might be amazing!!
Brandon is really good! This should be fun

0:07 "wooden buildings?" Who does your captions??🤣😂

Cool video tech bowling packy

803. *Damn!*
I'm planning to take this to my next tournament
Rip to the gentlemen btw
Nice vid keep it up!

Cool video talk tech bowling bowling ball wood bowling ball packy
No "hit 'em thin and watch spin" with those balls!
I wonder if you could get a wood worker to make you a wood bowling ball for a video
Old wood balls time!
You should throw it on wood lanes
Motiv Snipers basically roll like this thing does. I use mine for strikes all the time.
What were the weights?? I didn't hear it mentioned. Just curious. Definitely an awesome and unique video! 🙌🤟✌️🤘
Your joke was so bad I laughed😂😂
😂😂😂
Who is doing the translation LOL? Wooden Buildings 😆
How about a "Wooden" ball league😂😂
Packkyyyy, let me come up and challenge you brother. I’m from Oklahoma so easy drive. Let’s make it happen!
Cool 😄
oh boy. a Mitch sighting at 5:01
How about using the wooden ball on wooden lanes, not synthetic. Old school ball with old school lanes. Challange is throw a 200 or better!
Wood is the new urethane
Ya know packy, I do not think I will be buying this new “Black Woodow” bowling ball you guys are throwing
Black Woodow 2.0
Next video are you gonna creat your own wooden bowling ball from a tree?
Maybe I will👀👀
you should find someone with a lathe and have you a new hardwood bowling ball made you can drill with 2 finger holes and see what it does
If you guys need a new caption writer, hit me up lol i don't think wooden buildings are being thrown 🤣
What layouts did you used?🤣🤣🤣
What kind of weights are those balls ?
can you take this ball to holler house? maybe get another tour guy to have a roll off with you?
Somehow it still strikes more than that Yellow Dot Legend 😅
Hahaha that yellow dot did me dirty in the last video lol
So how possible is it to put a new core in a wooden bowling ball and see what would happen
Speaking of split or strike, at the last tournament I bowled I got 6 splits in the first game. It was literally 6 splits, 4 strikes.
hey i just got a new ball the !Q ruby and i wanna now if it a good ball i’m 13 i got a 174 and 180 first game with it but i’m kinda all over the place with the ball any tips

They almost look like Easter eggs.
You should try making your own wooden bowling ball
Going to try!
_Wood balls?_ Is this where the phase _'woody'_ comes from? (they're in the same neighborhood)
Yo yo yo wasssup buddy lol

RG of a wood ball?
What does front 11 mean?
First 11 strikes in a row 😁
How do those balls weigh? They look like they’re carrying well so I’m guessing there at most 10 pounds.
They are around 13-15lbs
Can you try to leave the whole backrow in the next video
Half......2:37
Wood never goes bad 😅
Haha only gets to hook more 😈
Hey packy can you please somehow some time do a colab with Forrest and 220 average bowler please
Anyway you could throw like a normal person with three fingers? None of that goofy two hand stuff.
6th
2 fingers total sux
I'm pretty sure this was one finger technically.
