- Hey everybody! Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Steve Hillage. While I have noticed a number of requests to feature some of Steve Hillage's classic progressive/space rock style, I have to admit that I'm still hopelessly listening to various "Space Rock" bands/artists, and this tribute to Steve's classic music is long overdue and VERY inspiring - so let's dive in!
This lesson centers around a variety of chord-based and rhythm guitar parts pulled from Steve's classic 1978 space rock masterpiece 'Green,' along with a song from the short-lived group Khan, and a classic from the legendary progressive band Gong. This includes sections of songs such as Leylines To Glassdom, Palm Trees, Sea Nature, Oily Way, The Glorious Om Riff, Unidentified (Flying Being), Mixed Up Man On The Mountain, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a viewer that asked for some of Steve's pioneering and classic prog/space rock music, a player searching for some interesting/inspiring ways of arranging chords/riffs in a song, a guitarist looking for some unique chord-based ideas, or maybe you're just curious what all the fuss is about - this lesson is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!
Steve was one of my hero’s from the 70’s and I still have the original Green LP. Brilliant that you chose this subject as I wouldn’t have a chance to decipher otherwise.. thanks a million!

Wow Dave you so incredible interesting it's like having the top teacher in my home you have a wealth knowledge second to none thank you so much I remember seeing Steve Hillage 1978 at deeply vale free festival run by Chris Hewitt from a little town in England called Rochdale Greater Manchester the festival was in a field not far from bury Lancashire look it up on UA-cam great times I was just 15 years old
Great choice!! Ive been listening to Steve Hillage for years. “Motivation Radio “is one of my favorite albums. Well done David!
My brother always listened to this guy. This guy has some tripped out elaborate records. Especially the flying teapot stuff. He was a great blues based player.
Steve has always been a favorite of mine! Can’t wait for the Gong episode!!
Saw him in London on the Live Herald tour. Excellent show!
SH is a superb musician. A great lesson David, thank you. Please make a follow up lead guitar lesson. Something from the both excellent L album or Hyde Park Set would be nice.
I’d like to teach the world to gliss in perfect harmony
Brilliant episode !!!
Awesome lesson. As a Failure and Hum fan, and space rock enthusiast, I’ve never heard of this guy. But I suspect Steve is the godfather.
A favorite of mine! Thank you! Steve's solo and his work with Gong are outstanding!
Great lesson, thanks Dave!
another great lesson by the one and only King David
Love Steve Hillage, Green is superb, especially with psychedelics, mind-blowing shit….great video, nice one dude
Definitely overlooked. I remember some hippy dude giving me Fish Rising and....uhhh...some oddly printed small pieces of paper. He advised i take it all in. Definitely a trip and a half. Party on, David 🤙🏼
Here come the fishes - love it 😁
Fantastic, next the leads of Huw Lloyd-Langton of Hawkwind please. Him and Hillage 2 of my inspirations. Then leads of Ed Wynne from Ozric Tentacles.
Those few first notes kind of remind me of over the mountain in that first song
I'm really loving your foray into the space rock genre. I've got the Kahn album on mp3 and it's awesome.
Seen Steve many times since the early 70s, if Hendrix was a spaceman, just awesome🎸🤘🏻
Saw him very recently. Awesome fretwork. I have Rainbow Dome Musik on clear vinyl and Green on green vinyl. Been a fan since 1975
Hillage… genius!
Great one !! still like to see Bill Barlett chord play.
Still my favorite guitar learning channel! Hillage is someone i should listen to more of.
Check out _Stimpy Lockjaw._ It's quite a unique sound. _Ahead of it's time_ is likely how people will see them eventually.
Yeah man..om riffing
If we're drifting through the vistas of space rock and psychedelia, have you covered Ozric Tentacles?
Bro does a screaming version of Hurdy Gurdy man.
Steve influenced by James brown with the funky stuff, big influence on my playing 🎸🎸🎸🎸
The two Hillage riffs I gravitate to are: A,, F#,E, A,.F#,E,A,.F#,E,A,.F#,E,A,. A,G,A,C. Fish Rising. And A, A,G,D,C,A,F#, Aftaglid - The Salmon Song. I liked Motivation Radio and the two somehwhat different albums: for to next and, and not or. He was/is an interesting british hippy dippy guy. Very much over-looked, ya.
Very cool but can you do budgie next?
Can anyone tell me the effects used for the start of Steve’s solo on ‘Palm Trees’? Thanks
hey bro i just read your channel description. Do you make transcriptions for hal leonard?
Hey! I wrote a few instructional books for them, and I also have some books with Centerstream and Cherry Lane as well - I didn't write transcription books though. That's an entirely different ballgame.
I almost went that route with them though, and they even sent me a training/test packet, but after thinking about it and seeing the amount of work it involved, along with the amount I would be making/earning, it didn't really seem like what I wanted to do, so I didn't pursue it.
I have noticed they aren't really making as many books compared to how they used to, so maybe that choice was for the best.
Anyway, I'm rambling - thanks for the question/comment and ROCK ON!
@ Not rambling, it was interesting to hear. Cheers dude
Check out Ed wynne from Ozric tentacles
Great video, thanks! He also played with Mike Oldfield on the Tubular Bells with orchestra concerts in 1974. He strikes quite a contrast! ua-cam.com/video/p556npGyXVo/v-deo.htmlsi=OrBbueDH_KHV_RAx
Nice one dude, if you are entertaining suggestions can you do another English guitarist, bit lacking on the lead but plenty of chordal work, Mr Johnny Marr , peace ✌️
