- Detailed instructions for tying a Caribou Caddis.
Hook: Standard dry-fly hook (e.g. Dai-Riki 305), sizes 14-18.
First Thread: 6/0, olive.
Abdomen: Hare-Tron Dubbin, light olive brown.
Underwing: Zelon, white.
Wing: Natural caribou hair, cleaned and stacked.
Thorax/head: Hare’s mask dubbing, natural.
Note: Change the abdomen color to match the naturals.

nice to see someone using Caribou. I've used allot of it on many hopper patterns inplace of Deer hair. Very nicely done with the Caddis pattern. On my list of flies to tie and try out.

Most of our tying videos get embedded on the Orvis blog and on Midcurrent. They are also found on Vimeo and here on UA-cam.
Elk Hair works well, it's just that Caribou is a good bit finer and softer so it gives the fly a different appearance. I really like Caribou for smaller imitations, say 18's and 20's.
how do you tell if it is better to fish this fly over an elk hair or another caddis similar in appearance?
would elk hair be an ok substitute? Nice fly
