these anti-landlord types have blinders. building a house takes a lot of sacrifices over a long time - and lots of risk, and commitment - a society without people that do this is a society with NO HOUSES. jealousy is understandable if it works - but it does not always work and takes a lot of sacrifice and postponing of spending on something 'more fun/instant gratification' etc. It is popular to think one person should give their house/money to another - but they won't do that themselves... which shows hypocracy. Govt needs to encourage people to build/invest and rent places out... that is how supply will > demand. When govt comes and artificially makes all the reward to the renter - get a nation of renters and not builders/risk takers etc

Landlords and realtors expecting tenants to pay the entire morgage is the main problem thats going on. Tennants should get their rent back when the owners sell the house. As it was the tennants money, no??
In korea they used to rent a place by giving 10,000 to the landlord, they invest it. Then give the 10,000 back when they leave

I am guessing that was North Korea. Don't worry the way the NDP is ruining BC your wishes will soon be granted. Enjoy.

I’ve heard a lot of harebrained ideas on social media, but this is at or near the top of the list. 😂
It’s already horrible investing in rental housing in BC (due to cap rates being 1/2 mortgage interest rates, an inhospitable environment for LLs and an LTA that is increasingly in favour of tenants)
How many ppl do you think are going to risk their money and take on the headache of a rental ppty (that’s often lived in by a tenant that is subsidized by the LL) if they have to return tenants’ money when/if they sell the house? 😂 🤦‍♂️
Many LLs are now selling because the numbers are so terrible (and tenants having to move out). You want to make things even worse for landlords - and by extension even worse for tenants?

If there are no landlords and investors to build houses and take all the risk of doing that , where would you live ? Who is going to provide you a roof . Try by yourself to buy a property , to pay mortgage and property taxes , utilities, maintenance , renovation and then you can talk . I’m curious if you will be happy to rent it to a tenant with your ideology.

"Any business that starts are drawing from lines of credit and those costs of finances have to be taken into account so why is that burden being placed on the renter?" This sentence vividly demonstrates either Amir's wilful ignorance or bias. The burden is clearly on the landlord not the tenant as he is subsidizing the tenant at rates not only below market but also below inflation Saretsky is too diplomatic and is spot on that the BC tenancy rules are the strictest in North America and favour the tenant period. Amir clearly has no understanding of business as Saretsky tries to gently point out the reality for landlords. The end result is that rents will not go down as Saretsky explains and gives the reasons why let alone the fact we have a million immigrants coming in per year. Do the math.

It's bias.. and he probably hates landlords, or tailors to the bases that do. He should attempt to be a landlord and help one of those red flagged tenants. His bias may change quickly.

You nailed and how dare our government make the people take the hit not the government overspending and self indulgence. The average Canadian investor is now the bad guy? But not ALL our government politicians and their properties. They shower themselves in tax paid raises ...?

That's just how the leftist socialists feel being steered by the media and government to fight with eachother while supporting the government.

The reason Steve never shows his gut is he's got a beer belly. He used to be a bartender.
