  • Here's the premiere of "Hollywood's Talking", Geoff Edwards' debut game show that aired on CBS from March 23rd, 1973 to June 22nd of that year. While the show, a Jack Barry Production, was a flop, it is probably more well-known for what it was replaced by. The show that aired in its place once it was cancelled? A little show you may have heard of, "Match Game '73".
"Hollywood's Talking" certainly isn't a bad game show, but it's not an outstanding one either. Geoff is still pretty good, and it's fascinating to watch his daytime debut. Two other shows debuted on the same day as this one, and both shows would fare better. Those shows? "The $10,000 Pyramid", and the hit CBS soap opera "The Young and the Restless".

This game show came on 45 years ago today. Same day earlier in the day, The $10,000 Pyramid and The Young& the Restless premiered.

I recognize that music cue at 12:55 - that's "Bell Hop (a)" by John Shakespeare. This cue is now well known for being heard in certain scenes of SpongeBob SquarePants with Patchy the Pirate (played by Tom Kenny, who also voices the show's title character).

I remembered this Game Show back in 1973 on CBS Television, it came on after The New Price Is Right at 3:00 P.M. I enjoyed the show and got used to this show, that was until it was permanently replaced by Match Game.

We have a list of celebrities on the opening to “Hollywood’s Talking”:
Mary Tyler Moore, Ross Martin, Pearl Bailey, Milton Berle, Sally Struthers, Rich Little, Lloyd Haynes, John Forsythe, Fess Parker, Judy Carne, JoAnne Worley, Doc Severinsen, columnist Joyce Haber, Dean Jones, Joan Rivers, Sebastian Cabot, Red Buttons, and David Janssen.

They had disagreed bitterly regarding the format of the show but the straw that broke the camel's back with Geoff was when Jack Barry came to his dressing room to tell him that his voice was annoying and asked Geoff to try to correct it. This is when Geoff told him to go ahead and release him after 13 weeks and to f- off in the meantime. This is documented in a book appropriately titled "Television Game Show Hosts."

Mr.Edwards recalled Jack Barry saying, "You know, you have a really annoying voice. Can you do something about that?" Edwards responded with, "Jack, I have a contract for 13 weeks. At the end of 13 weeks, don't renew it and don't come into my dressing room again."

I am checking out Wikipedia's Daytime Television schedules thru history and checking these old shows out. Only three/four channels in existence but it seemed better stuff was on esp. in 1973-1974. Is this from a trading circuit/UCLA/Employee/Contestant?

Instead of questions like "John likes to pour ______ on his cereal" they switched to questions like "John likes to stick his ______ in his cereal." It could be stick a spoon in his cereal but it might be something a little less likely to get past the censors but nobody would dare, you see. Thus a double-entendre.

Anyone know where copies of shows from the final week might be found? I was on this program Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday of the final week. The structure of the prizes was different by that time and I won the grand prize just by winning three successive regular games. Grand prize was a 1973 Datsun 240Z plus a wad of money. Anyway, I will happily pay whatever it might cost to get copies of those shows. GarryMooreFan do you know where I could find stuff from that last week? Thanks.

Hi!! I'm not sure who you could contact because sadly, besides this episode that I've posted, as far as I know every other episode of this series was destroyed back in the 70s. I think Sony currently holds the rights to all Jack Barry Productions, including this show, if any episodes exist, so Sony would be the company to get in contact with. Hoping for the best for you!!

As much as I liked Jack's hosting style, I had read that he was a real fucknut behind the scenes, so this doesn't surprise me. If Jack hated Geoff's voice so much, I wonder how he would've reacted if Louie Anderson had worked for him!

So there was this disclaimer at the 23:00 mark, during the close, that read some of the stars were given notes related to the subjects "in order to give contestants a fair chance to identify" them. On the one hand, this was not much different from "Hollywood Squares" or the yet-to-premiere "Celebrity Sweepstakes", but given Jack Barry's involvement-by-association with the quiz show scandals over a decade prior, would that disclaimer have been to address questions about a fix being in?
