Ponting Gibbs Smith Hussey Katich plus a great cameo from Boucher...and Bracken the only bowler from both teams that could hold his head high. The rest were absolutely smoked. Easily the greatest ODi ever played and needs to be celebrated.
Bracken but dropped the catch of Gibbs
Nobody talks about Graeme Smith’s innings in this match. That innings of his made the whole team believe they can get there! His intent and confidence was amazing!

@M Can't even use the "popular" name of the sport. Utterly pathetic.
Yess
For those of us who watched Makhaya Ntini through his career, we can tell you with absolute confidence that he was man of the match here.🤣 Never in his whole career had he struck a ball with soft hands. Especially in a series decider, with one wicket remaining, and to Brett Lee? Shot of the century! The willow has never been wielded so finely in the history of the game🏏
I believe you.
cannot agree more.
It's his instincts that made him do that, i guess
Now I understood why he was looking very scared in front of Lee. 😂😂
Played it like top order batsman
Chasing 430+ runs against austrailia is not a joke.
Prime south africa.
This was before t20 era today games are heavily in batsmen favour
funny part is inside , both teams didnt believe SA will win untill target came under 100.

@M No way in hell will soccer become the No 1 sport in Australia. We have a great local competition in Australian rules football and rugby league. l attend both soccer games and AFL games here in Melbourne and we can have 100,000 attend an AFL game at the MCG and the most attendance we have for an A League (soccer) game is around 20,000 for a stadium with a capacity of 32,000 and thats only when the two Melbourne sides play each other. Its funny that the largest crowd Manchester United ever played in front of was at the MCG in Melbourne when they came out here for an exebition match. Cricket isn’t stagnant they are including more nations to competitions all the time such as the Netherlands playing ODIs against New Zealand and England and before that it was Bangladesh, now competing in all forms of the game. The number of nations playing ODIs is over 40 including countries like Canada, Thailand and Nepal. Its not a matter of what game has the biggest following as if they are going to prevent people following other sports there will always be a huge number of cricket supporters. If you think soccer is going to become the No 1 sport in India you are out of your mind.
are you really a old man at 37

Before this match, the highest successful chase in ODIs was 332. SA beat that more than 100 runs ! Unbelievable and this still remains the highest chase more than 17 years later.
Sometimes it could be a Sri Lankan chase over 300 runs in 40 overs under the Aravinda de Silva. Runs not sufficient.

My father and I had watched this match together. It was March 2006. First we had watched Australia batting and when Australia cross 400 I asked my father that gream Smith might be thinking by how many 100 runs we are going to loose. As we all know Australia was unbeatable, unstoppable, inevitable in those days. My father was just smiling.
When Africa score was 3-1, my younger sister and I went to the park. When we return score was 190-1 after 22 overs. We don't have t-20 in those days. It was super exiting for me. And when SA score was 434-9 after 49.4 overs, in my whole lifetime I have never seen my father jumping with joy but on that day he was.

The greatest cricket match ever played on this planet.
Easily the best cricket match ever. High scores are common today but if you weren't there to witness this there's just no way to explain how unprecedented this was. Australia's 434 itself was huge, and because of history, absolutely no one actually believed it was possible to chase that score down, except the SA team themselves, and that belief was crucial.
Having to conquer a monumental score like that especially in this time period was a huge hit to the morale right from the start which means you've psychologically lost before the innings even began. But the SA team and the hometown crowd believed, there was this air of unrelenting hope and belief throughout and that manifested into them doing the seemingly impossible. The last 10 overs were easily the most riveting and dramatic 10 overs in cricket history.
That shot from ntini under pressure for a number 11 is actually class!!!
