Yes. It would be easier to escape than a standard triangle. A very strong guy that smashes you to the side before you can apply the choke with stuff this. I was show this by a Pedro Sauer student and was actually surprised how tight it was. I thought I could simply escape but it really is very tight.
Agreed. It actually works best when stacked quite high. The point is having a good squeeze. I thought I could simply blast out when it was applied but could not. The Pedro Sauer Student who showed me this said that he had been caught in it twice while rolling and then he showed me the application. I thought it was really cool because you often get caught in a head scissors without a way to finish a guy off.
I just got back from the dojo, but while I was there I tried it on my partner and he was tapping before he even knew what was going on! I was really surprised by how tight this choke can get. Thanks a bunch Ari.
I'm the Pedro Sauer student from Chicago. I was training at the Ft. McCoy fight house in Wisconsin and this choke was shown to me by the all army combatives champion SSG Jacob South who got it from his instructor in Utah.
awesome. if you get this tight and they try to throw you could use the momentum for the mounted triangle...shit 10th planet you need a branch in MI. you guys are constantly evolving. good work.
I tried this choke last night in practice and got a tap. I found myself almost losing the choke until I swam my free arm under his leg and pulled his leg out (so now he was kneeling on one leg and the other was stretched out in front of him). That seemed to stop his escape. I also felt funny putting my bare hand so close to his throat, so I got my hand to mission control instead. I'd be worried that a judge or ref with a poor view would call a penalty on me with just my hand blocking the artery.
Ari, would this be easier to escape than a standard tirangle? If the guy moves to the side or something... Also his arms are free to remove your legs, or at least to prevent you to apply as much pressure. But it sure is a great alternative to the standard triangle!
One of my students AJ Dollison tapped Jeff Shaw @ Grapplemania XIII in 46 sec w/this technique. Our guys call it the Dollison Triangle 'cause he hits it on guys even when they know he throws it!
Don't see why you would ever do this instead of a standard counter to the double underhook pass. If someone gets double unders they are stacking and passing immediately. Even if you can get the lock in your hips will be too far under your opponent to have any squeezing power due to their stack, then as they drop to one side you're forced to break and give them the pass. The standard counter is to drop your legs and hips so they can't raise them. This is just making it easier.
damn I have been looking for a better defense against stacking and this looks pretty good but what about having leg control on his which would prevent his slamming you?
i wouldnt say way high up but its towards the top because me being unproportional, my legs are short and even with good flexibility (which i have) i cant mission control correctly unless i scoot my hips out which would be towards his head. hope that explains it. i've noticed some vids where eddie would lean one way to try and keep them from stacking but that only works for like a few seconds. solution?
Just curious but in a reality situation, are his arms in a position to effectively punch the head? would this be a 3 second choke, it might be worth taking one or two to make him sleep?
I got caught in an armless triangle choke the other day going for a double under pass. Is there a way to escape the armless triangle choke or is one pretty much screwed?
Wow, how legal is this? Like, would BJJ actually let you do this? I imagine in MMA it'd be great because odds are they wouldn't be able to tell if it was legal or not in a pinch....
yea. whenever i use rubber guard on my friends they ALWAYS stack. is there a way to keep them from just standing up? i always have to result to a knee bar or a sweep. it gets annoying. anybody got a solution?
you can do what Joe Stevenson does when he gets taken down, he throws one of his arms over his opponents head, almost like a guillotine, but he doesn't lock it in. He does it so that way if he finds an opening, he can submit the other dude, and also the other dude is afraid of getting caught in a guillotine. From there work your way to full guard. Then again, I'm not a BJJ black belt, so maybe someone here can give better advice the me. :P
this is an excellent response to your opponent trying to pass your guard with both his arms underhooking your legs...have not tried this yet but i would imagine that you would have to act before your opponent reacts ands flips you/gets your legs past your head so he can passs.....if you like these free moves check out my page...i have all the moves broken down in playlists (full guard subs, half guard subs, half guard sweeps, etc.)hope you enjoy it because i do....

Nice video. Great verbal description!!! love this technique

Top notch technique Ari!
It cuts off both. Your leg cuts off the other side.

thats kinda like what the liberty choke is i think...if i remember right

could you make a fist on the attacking hand instead of keeping it open? it would seem more comfortable
Great!!! I'm gonna try this
can anyone tell me, what do you do when you have someone in halfguard and he is bear hugging you really tight under the arms ?
nearly knocked me out once when I was trying to be a tough and left it up for too long.
Lesson learned: don't be stupid, tap out.
Would that move be allowed in BJJ or MMA competition since you're actually using part of your hand to choke the person?
"It's more of a douchebag move" lol
I can't seem to find the Brandon Quick's Liberty Choke. Anyone have a link. Nice video by the way.
well they have stacking sweeps and defenses posted up.

How good is your rubber guard? Is high up, or low down on your friends back? Or is it even up near their neck?
Just curious but in a reality situation, are his arms in a position to effectively punch the head? would this be a 3 second choke, it might be worth taking one or two to make him sleep?

this is really nice.. most of our submissions are taken from submissions 101 haha!
Interesting!
question for you Ari...can i put my arm thru my triangled legs and apply pressure to the artery with my forearm?mahalo...
Wow, how legal is this? Like, would BJJ actually let you do this? I imagine in MMA it'd be great because odds are they wouldn't be able to tell if it was legal or not in a pinch....
Can you still shoulder back while doing this?
BTW do you guys teach? as in a club and stuff.
yea. whenever i use rubber guard on my friends they ALWAYS stack. is there a way to keep them from just standing up?
i always have to result to a knee bar or a sweep. it gets annoying. anybody got a solution?
What if instead of using your hand, you used a cross-collar grip (assuming your opponent is wearing a gi) with the legs triangled? Could that work?
even if they're about to pick u up u can still do the technique ?
so most of the choke is actually applied with the hand? like basically grabbing the throat?
@spetsnaznaz exactly, the leg cuts the other side :)
Submissions101, is this submission legal in ADCC or other grappling events?
its called a leg triangle
Straight up, hes been throwing his fights though, against Diego Sanchez and whats his face... Kenny Florian.

thnx man
@submissions101
Is this legal in competition?
Ty
wow this is very helpfull. and lol at 2:26
yea but, i like to finish off the back because its more fun. i could sweep any day and get mount but finish from back is way more fun.

How do you defend this?
@lazsoliz I thought the same thing while watching this. Gotta try it out
intersting.
