    I have been following you for a minute. And let me first start by saying that your a sweet man. Also want to say, thank you for all the field trips. I'm a recent amputee and bed ridden for the moment. You have done tours in the city where I grew up, and even in my neighborhood of Southwest Philly(Kingsessing). I really appreciate you so much for that. It's the only way that I can get outside. Word to the wise...please stop driving up one-way streets...lol. Stay sweet and stay safe.

    Really appreciate the videos, Philly was such a wonderful experience when I was in the navy. Hard to recognize a lot of the city now, but there's always gonna be those places that you never forget, like the masonic temple, and those statues... man those were some good times

    Kind of a Black history note (here 2 1/2 years after you filmed this video). At 1:10:50 you showed us the construction site for what is now the hyper-expensive Laurel Condominums. Next door to that the older building is the Rittenhouse Plaza. IN there lived a colleague of famed opera singer and groundbreaking Black artist, (Robert) Todd Duncan, born 1903, died 1998, who was the original Porgy in Porgy and Bess among other works. Starting in 1965, he taught as a vocal coach at the Curtis Institute of Music, just off Rittenhouse Square, and his colleague who lived in the penthouse of the Rittenhouse Plaza routinely sang his praises. As young ones we already knew who Todd Duncan was. His house in Washington, DC is near the park called Dupont Circle and is a landmark. Thanks for this great if sobering tour from COVID-19 time; strange to see what we went through.

    What a weird time. I was an "essential" employee in D.C. during this time and was taking the Metro in every day. Sometimes I'd come out of the Smithsonian station and I'd be the only person around. It was sort of haunting. There were a few months where it was just me and a security guard in the museum I worked at. I might go a full shift without ever actually seeing another human, only talking to a guard on the phone a couple times. The whole thing was very surreal.
    I don't wish to make light of all the awful stuff that happened during that time (and still is happening), but there's a weird part of me that is almost nostalgic for it. I often had the train and the bus either to myself, or there'd only be a couple other "essential" workers on it. The city was very quiet in the morning and I'd frequently be totally by myself walking from the Metro stop to my job, where I'd also have a really quiet day by myself. Not gonna lie, there were a few days where I caught up on my sleep, because there wasn't much to do, but I had to be there. And then, in the afternoon, the National Mall would be full of families, out enjoying what the city has to offer in a way I don't think people had for a long time. With all that awful stuff going on, it was like some folks were waking up to how life could be. Sadly, I think we've fallen back into old habits, but maybe not completely.

They got best of Philly Pizza for like 3yrs . 11th & Samson that building on that corner was (MIDTOWN DINNER) the HOT 🔥 SPOT for after hours . After leaving the Gayborhood Clubs that was the place to be and be scene. Everyone hung in their til wee hrs in the morning. We would be coming into work and the ppl would be just leaving Midtown after a long night of having fun obviously lmao. You hit all those good memory spots...thanks for the video

  • @jduff59
    @jduff59 3 роки тому +2

    I used to always keep a fare card on me in case I had to outrun trouble - you never know when you need to ditch someone and getting on a train is a good way to lose someone who's hot after you, especially at night. Imagine trying to pay for a fare when you're getting pursued. After I moved to Cali - I still had one in my wallet. I can still remember the smells from the Broad Street Subway on a hot summer day - whew!

    The great W.C. Fields once said he went to Philadelphia once and it was closed. Little did he know.

    • @markhomer8567
      @markhomer8567 2 роки тому

      Actually, Fields grew up in Germantown and left when he was twelve. He did used to joke about the bank teller who absconded with $100,000 and spent it all in a week of riotous living in Philadelphia; in the thirties and forties, that actually was funny.

      Yea there’s usually more foot traffic under the el but I guess the weather plus the “stay inside order” gave it slightly less foot/vehicle traffic. Appreciate you commenting. Enjoy your day 💯👐🏽
