Thank you curt. I rx already but I can't transmit using my keyboard with adaptor... What seetings do I need to change in mfj 464?pls help me. Thank you
I'm not aware of any settings on the MFJ 464 that need to be made. (I never changed anything, just used it right out of the box). More than likely, the settings that you need to work with have to do with whichever radio you are using. I only use an IC-7300, so I can't help you with any other radio, sorry.
@@CurtRowlett i can now transmit using my keyboard. thank you curt .. my another problem now is i cannot clearly read the device.. i mean the device mfj 464 cannot read will cw transmission. on actual conversation. i think the settings. what is the proper setting for this device like TONE and VOLUME and so on so it will read cw clearly..thank you in advance for your reply. architectflo@gmail.com
Hi Curt thanks for showing us your new MFJ device.....looks very interesting......but what I am really interested in is how does it cope reading CW....hand sent CW. A few years ago I bought a K1EL K44 reader sender....it was fine for sending but near useless at reading. Love to see the hook up details to your IC-7300 as well. 2E0LPL in the UK.
Hello 2E0LPL: I'd love to be able to answer your questions in more detail, particularly how I did my set up/hook up on the IC7300, but I no longer have that rig (I lost everything in Hurricane Ian last year). But in answer to your question about how the MFJ device copied hand-sent CW, the answer, as with the human ear, depended on how strong the signal being sent was coming through. In other words, sometimes great, sometimes not so great. Curt W9SPY
I noticed mine kept transmitting random characters and also the keyboard didn't seem to work too well but only when the transmitter was running when I had qsk off that wasn't a hitch so my g90 I had to drop the watts from 20 down to 10 watts for it to work reliably
Very nice and simple demonstration. I appreciated it especially because I want to buy one like that and by watching your video I have had quite a few questions answered. I hope to hear again from you with the latest discovery of yours. Thanks very much for your help.
Greetings Curt what kind of plug is on your keyboard, a pin plug or a usb, found old review and he talk about pin plug going into mfj-464 from the keyboard, the only wired keyboards i see online are usb wired. thanks Tom
I no longer have this set up; in fact, I dismantled it and sold all of the parts at a ham fest. But, I do know that the keyboard plug was a pin plug not USB. I purchased the keyboard from MFJ Enterprises, so they can tell you what you would need.

Hi can you post a link where to get the stereo jack plug with single rca as i have looked all over the net in the uk and cant find one they all have double rca plugs .I dont mind ordering from the usa as i saw another video in which the guy stated that you need a stereo jack plug as a mono wont work .MFJ dont sell these cables .
I would if I had that information, but I'm sorry to say that I don't. I used to get all of my connectors from Radio Shack, but they have gone out of business since then.
@@CurtRowlett Thanks for your reply , can you confirm that you are using a stereo 1/4 to single rca plug .The single rca goes to the key out on the back of the 464 and the stereo 1/4 goes to the key port in the back of the 7300 , i contacted mfj but the never reply to e-mails .
Yes, I can confirm that. Don't hold your breath waiting for MFJ to reply. They are notorious for having bad customer service. I'm actually surprised that they are still in business, to be honest. They make most of their money these days by selling to the larger vendors, such as Ham Radio Outlet and DX Engineering. If I were you, I"d contact one of those companies with your inquiry about your parts.
@@CurtRowlett I have contacted all the uk dealers who sell the 464 and have been told that a mono plug will work but after some investigation on a 7300 it wont , seems strange that you need a stereo 1/4 plug but i have ordered a connector which will accept 2 rca plugs with a single output and see if that works but im not holding my breath .I looked through 40 pages on aliexpess trying to find the cable that you have and also phoned loads of dealers who sell cables all to no avail .Are you using a modern keyboard with an adaptor to 5 pin at connection .Sorry for all the questions .
Hello Curt I would like to purchase an MFJ 464. What I am not clear on is how to connect it to my FT 450D? I contacted MFJ and they suggest that I connect the MFJ 464 by plugging it into the plug where I would plug the morse key. Is this what you have done. Kind regards Simon.
Hi Simon: Yes, I have the MFJ 464 connected in the back of my ICOM 7300 where the Morse code keyer would normally go. It works quite well, but you have to take into account the "break in" settings for your particular radio. This may not be a concern for your radio, but it was for mine. If you have any problems along those lines, I'm sure that you can contact MFJ again and get them to help you with that aspect. The MFJ 464 works pretty well, but there is a minor learning curve to getting it to perform well. It all depends on the quality of the Morse signal you are receiving, just as any other Morse decoder does.
It copies about as well as most CW decoders do, which is to say, that it can be tricky getting all of the settings right in order to get a clear decode. It all depends on the strength of the signal you are tuned to and most importantly, how well the sender is at transmitting Morse. It works best when copying CW that is sent by a computer program or from another keyer, as the dits/dahs are more consistent.
Hi there friend of mine has one of these, when the morse comes it fast it reads it as a load of E E E's, is there anyway to set the incoming morse speed...not the sending speed...g4vvq.
No, there isn't an internal setting for the incoming Morse. About the only thing that seems to help is to adjust the incoming volume and RF gain on your radio, typically by turning them both down, almost to the point where you can barely hear the incoming signal. The decoder works pretty well, but it is affected by the quality of the Morse being sent. For example, computer-generated Morse will decode best, while that which is hand-sent will not, if it isn't perfect. The truth is, most Morse decoders don't work all that well but this one seems to work a bit better than others. I hope that helps. 73 W9SPY
On the front panel, next to the volume knob, there is a recessed tuning slot that allows adjustment of the input level. The manual that came with the MFJ-464 keyer does not give very good instructions on how this is done, so I have not been tempted to try it out. Here is what the manual says about that: "You can adjust the Input Level and tune the signal directly on the MFJ-464. However, it is recommended that you do these adjustments on your radio and not on the MFJ-464. Changing the Input Level and the Tuning the signal on the MFJ-464 can cause problems when trying to listen to another signal. These adjustments are much easier to do on your radio than on the unit itself."
Thanks for the compliment. And yes, there are absolutely real number stations out there. And there are groups (Priyom, Spooks Newsletter) that monitor their transmissions (I work with one of those groups). You can hear actual number stations yourself by simply going to the Priyom website, check their number station schedule, and then follow the links to hear a live transmission via a WebSDR. It does take some time and patience, but you will most certainly hear genuine number station transmissions.
That key is manufactured by MFJ, but I purchased mine from DX Engineering. The price has gone up, but I got it from here: www.dxengineering.com/parts/mfj-553
