  • The Wranglerstar / ApostleP Gauntlet Challenge has reached its conclusion. Did I successfully meet the challenge, or did I fail? Will the UA-cam universe witness my conquering glory, or mock me in ignominious defeat? Will there be cheering or snickering?
    You be the judge...
    ** Note **
    Sorry for the 37-minute epic, gang... But please understand, there is another 45 minutes of footage on the cutting room floor :)

    This was one very interesting video. I enjoyed it. Honestly, I am only into traditional pocket knives, but I really gained some insight into the innerworkings of these types of knives. I would say that anyone who sends you a knife to work on and/or sharpen, is most certainly in good hands. Very entertaining. Thanks for the lessons!

    Interesting I had that knife back to Benchmade 2 years ago for sharpening and repair. I asked them to look at the blade play. They returned the knife kind of sharp and didn't address the blade play. From the looks of it I'd say then didn't take the knife apart. Perhaps they should watch this video to learn how to properly take care of a knife.

    It's not so much the steel, I think, as it is the primary blade grind of the 940. The cross section of the blade is like a wedge, with a 10-12 degree inclusive main grind angle. Also, Cody's knife is very thick behind the edge, so it's kind of tricky to find the right edge geometry for good cutting.

    I was so impressed that i bought the 940 and the spyderco para 2 and the edge pro because I have never !!! been able to sharpen any !!! knife. then I bought the mini grap because i didnt want to practice on my best 2 knives. so I have done pretty well practicing on my mini grap but still scared to touch my better knives. (oh impressed with your skill and attention to detail I meant ) I have a question for you. when you place the blade on the edge pro do you put the flat of the blade on the base or do you put the angle part of the blade against the base? might sound like a a dumb question but at 51 years old I have learned that the only dumb question is the one you dont ask. I am never going to be to old to learn. God Bless

      Doesn't matter where you rest as long as it's easy to hold consistently in the same spot. Something like a PM2 you can easily hold it on the flat the whole time, but a blade that doesn't have a flat you just hold on the face of the blade.

    I was in the mood for this old vid to re-watch. What i was thinking during review that i think this is one major advantage of the more expensive knives, the willing to resharpen and spa treatment investment of the owner. Where cheap knives probably getting replaced. So i think an expensive knife helps sustainability and preserve our limited sources better. What do think about that Sir Rob? (Sorry for my bad english)

    Oh, Lord, no! This is a pretty delicate process, as you don't want to remove much material at all, and the keys are flatness and consistent thickness. I use a worn out piece of 800-1000 grit sandpaper on a very flat surface, making figure-8's, then finish on my strop. This makes the washers smooth as glass without compromising dimensional integrity.

      Greg Wallace if it’s pointing towards the pivot side the pivot is to long, so you sand down the pivot. If it’s pointing towards the pivot screw the blade is either over tight or the pivots is worn out.

    • @Him__3000
      @Him__3000 10 місяців тому

      Probably lifting the edge into the strop when you are picking the knife up to do the other side. It’s important to, once you make a pass, stop, pick the knife up holding the exact angle without rolling the edge onto the leather, and do the other side. Only do 10 passes per side, any more and you’re convexing the edge, in my experience. Also, green paste is generally very low quality, I highly, highly recommend DMT Dia-paste, 1 micron. It works wonders!

    your making a very suttle mistake here at 17:10 the light passes. I had a video on this. When using very light pressure with the system, if you travel passed a quarter of the stone, your angle changes slightly. Take your pivot arm, and without any pressure make a super light forward stroke all the way, and watch your pivot... when it reaches a certain point, it is no longer under load and it moves down... got to watch out for this! When making very light passes, they have to be very short, and horizontal.

    You make it look easy, so much so, I am looking to purchase a Edge Pro kit here in U.K.
    How easy/hard would it be for someone to learn how to use this type of sharpener?

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  10 років тому

      Great question, with a bit of a complicated answer, Michael. For me, as an experienced free-hand sharpener, it was fairly easy. For some, it's very frustrating, and they prefer the Wicked Edge over the Edgepro. The EP takes more skill and muscle memory from the user than the WE, because your off hand is the "clamp" holding the blade against the table. However, the EP, because of that same characteristic, affords more flexibility in positioning the knife, which can become important on some blades. I love the Edgepro, and the results I get with it. But I also have a local knife knut buddy who is selling his because he just can't get it right. Not much help there, huh?

    • @michaelhutin5451
      @michaelhutin5451 10 років тому

      TheApostleP Lots of help thanks, will check out the "Wicked Edge".
      The Edge Pro's spares seem very fair in price and available here in U.K. I have used various old fashioned sharpening stones over the years, but the EP looks as though, once mastered, will return much more consistent results.
      Thanks again for an excellent video.
      P.S. did you make the leather polisher/sharpener or can they be purchased? Was the leather oiled?

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  10 років тому

      I purchased my strop from "stropman" on ebay, but you certainly could make one. It is not oiled. I use a green fine rouge-type compound on the smooth side, and gray medium on the rougher side.

      You may have found an answer by now, but in case not; It is a Edge Pro Apex, they run about $275 for a full model, they may have a cheaper version with less bells or a more expensive one... I am not to sure. I personally use a Wicked Edge because it better suits my personal needs.
      But the Edge Pro is a great system, and maybe a bit more practical (money wise) than a Wicked Edge.

    How about the table magnet to secure blades ? Your opinion

      Cody fro Edgepro has tried to give me one, but after over 10K knives, I find my “manual clamp,s,” aka hands work the best. Muscle memory is a beautiful thing. It also makes you faster and more precise as you move the knife along the table in some situations. The magnetic table might be good for someone who doesn’t sharpen a lot of knives though.

    You ever use Jewlers rouge for your strop?

    • @bob77953

      cwrowe Yes he does. He uses grey on one side and green on the otherside. He then strops with them respectively. Hope that answers your question!

    great video man. you should try to get in contact with NutnFancy. your videos are very informative like his, and I think some of your ideologies align pretty closely. Cody sent me over here and I subbed and would like to know what part of Indiana, roughly, are you from? I family all over that great state!
