Pretty much shows, that people haven't been in the army. Those with the minecraft character as avatars etc.
You can expect a lot of shit in the army. Your whole company will have to wake up in the middle of the night, because there is this one room, whose trash can had one candy wrapper in it.
"What should we do, to make sure this never happens again?"
"Oh I know, grab the shovels and lets bury your fallen comrade pvt. Candy Wrapper like a true soldier"
And then you'll dig a fucking 2m deep grave for that candy wrapper, salute it when he's lowered into the grave, sing the anthem and dig all the dirt back in the grave. Not to mention, you can't dig mindlessly. You'll have to remove the top soil carefully first, so you can place it all back later. And then you'll go in the showers, whole company has to clean up in 15 minutes and by that time it's already 6:00AM and you'll have to wake up.
Most likely the OP was smoking when he wasn't allowed to. So he had to bury the cigarette butt in the same manner.

Shelf space is still intact. Can protect better from harsh weather conditions and animals...maybe hand grenades...lol.

When your survival and combat effectiveness depends on how well you make your fighting position, its best to get it right whilst you've got the chance!
As civilians, digging a survival space may be the only means to have shelter from the elements, so knowing how to do it right is worth learning.
Going to ground takes on a whole new meaning when you're actually sheltered below the surface.

    What about a grenade sump?
We had 3 guys build a fighting position where the trail entered our area of operations by digging down & building up using sand bags & then berming the dirt on the outside we had it covered but I don't remember what all we used. We added foliage all around & over with a small tree on top. To include the M60 on tripod. The Capt. & 1St Sargent came into the area about dusk creeping along real slow lights out foot on the brake. First thing they know I'm almost nudging the 1'st Sargent in the ribs with an M16. The stopped real fast. He asked where did you come fro> I pointed & said over there . He said over where. He said I don't see any fighting position. I said that's the general idea. They had to get out of the Humvee & inspect the fighting position. It's worth a good laugh when those in command get surprised.

Not a real Fighting Hole unless it has a grenade sump. 😉
I once spent all afternoon digging a two-man fighting hole (at Pendleton) while my partner was on an OP. He came back at dusk, and I got pulled for duty on a LP. Never got to enjoy my hole.

I just came back from basic training. People don't know how much work it is to dig. It was so much work. I was paired with one other soldier and we had to dig a hole based at the side of a treeline. The upper soil was too loose to dig with our little shovle so we had to dig by hand. Underneath there were a lot of tree roots we had to chop through. It was a lot of work. Took half an hour to get knee deep.

My daughter and I were near Bastogne back in 2013 and visited the woods overlooking the village of Foy. To our surprise the Airborne's "fox holes" are still there - guess they were too busy to fill them in afterwards!
Not as deep as this because the ground is thick with pine tree roots but even so they look like so many shallow graves.
A hot September day out in the sunshine, the chill in the shadows was enough to quickly drive us away. As my daughter said: "the place has a bad feel about it."
If you're ever near go take a visit and try and figure out how they managed to leave the relative safety of their holes and walked across nearly a mile of open, snow covered field to attack their objective.
