  • This is Aaron Copland's wonderful composition, written especially for Benny Goodman. This is the first performance, with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, although not conducted by Aaron. Two of the discs have some groove flaws, not serious but you'll hear them briefly.

This is great! Thanks for uploading this. The balance between the clarinet and the strings is much different here than in his later recording with Copland conducting. Reiner, at the time, was conducting at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. The tempos at the end here showcase Benny's brilliant technique. Interestingly, he chooses not to glissando the final run to high D, as he does later in his recording with the composer.

Thank you James! I was fortunate to find this, and the only version I had heard was the one with Copland. I enjoy the differences also!

@@randellmorris7248 Randy, James was the man who started me on clarinet at age 10. You can blame him for all the insanity!

@@DaveBennettMusician No one would ever hold anyone today to the feats that he achieved! He doesn't get the respect for all of the collaborations he supported that made the clarinet and its legitimate literature what it is today!

The pitch is almost a whole step sharp - so his playing speed is much faster than would be if in the correct pitch. He did NOT play it this quickly.

David - Thank you for the information! I wouldn't have thought that a 1950 recording would be off speed. It will take a couple of weeks but I can correct this.

:) the “Amazing slowdowner” program could pretty easily digitally fix it - it has a setting to either keep the pitch with the speed or separate. So if you set it to keep pitch with speed, and then tuned the pitch to his actual 440 A, the speed would be corrected along with the pitch. The record was probably (??) recorded at the right speed, who knows...... is pretty wild though! Cool you have it!
