    On the piece that attaches on the end of the cable that goes through your spare tire has a threaded bolt on the piece on the top of the van is a cable it’s called a safety cable so in case the spare tire was to fall the tire would not go out on the highway. Some people use this and attach it before they crank it all the way up as a safety and some people don’t bother with it. I try to put things back the way it was. Just a fireman thing.🔥Thanks for taking the time to do this. You can actually tell who the boss is here lol she is 👍

      Thank you for the lovely comment, it’s means a lot to us, but we couldn’t not help Will as he is such a genuine and lovely person, he actually touched us with his kindness to others when he was travelling and he paid his good fortune forward to the people in Nepal, seeing someone from an younger generation be so giving was truly inspiring and we both believe that someone who pays it forward deserves the kindness they have shown others!

    Mine also broke while we were almost home. We didn't lose a wheel and kill someone but dragged the tire home. There is supposedly another braided cable on my Transit van with a bolt that keeps the tires from killing someone on the highway. Those engineers at Ford need to get their act together and make these parts from stainless steel and heavier cable so it doesn't rust and cause so much money and aggravation. Engineers? Nahhh just someone with that paper degree without a brain and decided to cut cost and used bicycle brake cables to hold a 100lbs wheel under that truck!!!

    Couldnt you have bolted it to a rear door?

    • @UrbanVanlife
      @UrbanVanlife  2 роки тому +1

      We did look at rear door carriers for the wheel but as we are not keeping the van this was actually the most economical way for us to sort the problem and it is then up to the new owner if they want to change anything that will make the outside of the van look different

  • @boatheadontour7702

    Not as good as the old style ones that were made in nottingham. Back then the company charged about £10 for them to Ford who sold them for about £69.

    It’s the most stupid design ford have ever come out with …. Took forever to release the spare wheel this morning as there should be a tool to fit that nut … mine was corroded and couldnt shift it ..had to heat it up etc and get machanic out . Why ford couldn’t leave the tray like on the old transit and just undo a normal bolt let it drop and wheel comes off is beyond me …. How to make something simple complicated ! Anybody know of an impact socket that will fit inside the bolt to make it easier ????

  • @frankwolf389

    Aren't the Riv-Nuts supposed to be put in the body, not the crank mechanism? Then you use M4 screws to tighten them down.

  • @AW-Services

    Spare wheel winches are shite. Pressed steel construction which rots out. The handle nut normally rounds out aswell
    Plenty of spray white grease or red grease pumped into it for preventative maintenance

    How much does it cost to convert a van to a camper?

    • @UrbanVanlife
      @UrbanVanlife  2 роки тому +1

      That’s a very vague question to answer, different vans and different interiors costs will range massively, some people can convert their vans on a great minimal budget others spend 20k upwards. There are ways of converting on all types of budget, but prices are still high in the van world at the moment

  • @andyeaton
    @andyeaton 2 роки тому +2

    Hi Guys, that's a similar design to the discovery 3 one, don't ever try and wind it up without weight on it, i suspect that sometime in its life thats what has happened, it knackers the flex and chews it up usually beyond repair as is yours, that's why they come already wound out, would it not have been better to rivnut the body then bolt it down to them in case it needs repair in the future, nice vid tho

    Great video guys... just wanted to add if you want belts and braces I would fully grease up the internals of the cable / cable tube and all moving parts and actually wind it in and out several times before installing it. That part once its got water and salt in it will be rusted again in a year... they always go that way so if you really want to help someone else say 2 years down the road then thats what I would do... I know this because I had to cut my cable in a snow blizzard in Scotland after a snowplough ran me off the road without stopping and blew my front left tyre out I was stranded for the night because of it and got a loan of the metal snips from a kind old lady... some colourful words were said that night...lol
