I have been a General Contractor pushing 40 years, like every other contractor I would have laughed and said there is just no saving particle board. (If it's wet like a sponge you can't even power dry it with a professional dehumidifier). But! my floor-to-ceiling particle board divider between my custom tile, cabinets, and refrigerator bubbled up and I am not remodeling the kitchen until next year. So seeing your results I thought I have nothing to lose and went for it. Sanded out all bubbles (raised surfaces), scraped/gauged out all crumbly material, sanded to 80 grit, and then skimmed with quality wood putty. Sanded to 120, primed with 999, sanded again, and instead of sticking the decorative vinyl tiles over the damage as my wife planned. She took one look at it and broke out the chalk paint. I was sure the putty would just pull off when sanded flat, but it held, so I know I am going to get more than a year out of it. Kitchen Remodel postponed - Bless you :)
In May I broke my arm. Sadly it resulted in my radial nerve not responding. I ended up losing my job where I was making six figures. So I can no longer type or play piano, I am a musician as well..... But I started watching videos on furniture flipping and it turns out if I wear my brace on my hand I'm able to do a pretty good job at it! I am really excited to start this journey and I've already sold a couple of pieces. It's proof that even when life throws you down you can stand back up and fight.❤
Great Job. This is a common problem with MDF window sills as well. One trick I use is to drill out drill out the swelling and patch it with a filler. I sand the filler when dry, scratch sand the rest, and go through the same procedures you do. This saves a lot of time in sanding, creates less dust, saves money on sand paper, and makes your hands last longer. Again, great job and great advice.
@@amber_Forever16 If it is that bad, throw it away. It will not be worth your time and effort. You can find sold wood furniture at thrift stores, the salvation army, good will, on the side of the road on large trash day, and from friends who are looking to downsize. Run from mdf products. In my case, I have to make repairs from time to time as it is installed in door jams, trims and window sills when I do paint restorations. Best of luck.
I repair furniture and I like how you approached the swollen MDF top. I have not used that approach for a repair as most want the top to remain the same, especially if it is a set piece. You have given me some food for thought about future repairs. A couple of suggestions for future flips. When removing the swelling from pieces, you may want to try a sharp chisel. If you lay the back of the chisel flat against the surface, you can shave off the swelling prior to sanding. It wont be perfectly flat, but this will reduce the overall time needed to sand. The other suggestion would be to use heavier clamps when gluing damaged corners. Harbor Freight has some inexpensive F-style clamps that are perfect. Additionally, sandwich the broken corner with a small piece of melamine on the top and bottom. This serves two purposes. First, it gives you a strong surface to clamp against without damaging your workpiece. Second, any glue squeeze out wont stick to the melamine. The heavier clamps will force the damaged corner back together better and may eliminate the need to use filler. Thanks for the video and the ideas for future repairs I may encounter.
Thanks for this video. My wife and I are in the process of remodeling and repairing her late parent's 1990s mobile home. We discovered moisture damage on the kitchen cabinets so seeing you do this gives us hope since we're on a budget.

Thanks you for your kind words Lisa. I am learning with every piece I finish so do not be discouraged if you get "stuck" on a piece. You CAN do it! Start with a small piece first and gain experience AND watch a bunch of UA-cam videos.
What a great video. Thank you for helping us. People like me do not know all the ins and outs of flipping furniture and this made it easy. I do it for my home not for resale
Hi Stella. I make my videos for people like you so you can have clear, concise info showing you how to refinish furniture for your personal use (or to flip it). I am glad it was helpful. If you think I need to do something differently, please let me know. I learn a lot reading these comments from my viewers.

Oh wow I didn’t realize you could do this! My parents gave me an old pair of nightstands they’ve had forever when they moved house and although I love the shape I hated the water marks on the top. I’ve just put putting placemats on them and I was considering getting rid of them, but this just gave me an amazing idea! Thank you for sharing!

Perfect video! I have an old octogon end table with a top like that. Bubbles included! I didn't know how to fix it before. Thank you! My biggest problem is deciding what color to paint it!
LOL! Yes, I understand how hard it can be to choose a color. I like to use Behr chalk paint so you can have it tinted to any of the colors on the wall! Toooooo many to choose from!
Thank you for taking the time to share your expertise with us!!! Your video mentioned repairing a split drawer, have you filmed a video covering that topic? If so, I would LOVE to watchbit as well!!
In this video I show how the top edge of the dresser had gotten wet so the MDF had become separated into thin layers. I showed how I glued it together, filled it with wood putty and then sanded it. I don't think I showed the "after"photo. But it ended up looking perfect- you cannot tell at all that I repaired it. I recently did a chest of drawers with the same problem on the drawer front. I am moving into a house soon that we just bought and we considered buying all new furniture until we saw it would be a few thousand dollars. I found your video an it has been very helpful in educating me on how to repurpose our old hand me down furniture.
I would definitely purchase used furniture and refinish it. My videos show you how to paint it or stain it. I suggest taking time to purchase only wood furniture. You can get it frequently for the same price as used mdf furniture. Just take your time and look ALL OVER for used furniture! You will find exactly what you want!
Excellent video and instructions! I have an MDF table that I bought second-hand that was left outside at some point. Now, I am feeling more confident about fixing it up & keeping it. Thank you!

This video came j6st at the right moment for me! I found 2 bedside tables listed for $3.00 each and 2 more for $4.00 each but they gave me all 4 of them for $10.00! I will finish them this weekend/week and will send you a picture. Thank you for a great tutorial!!
That is awesome! Yes, I want to see the final results. Remember ----- after you sand the bubbles/top flat with 60-80 grit sandpaper you need to go over it again with 220 to close the pores. It makes a BIG difference!!! Do not skip that step.
You know, on those tops, you could use a router to reshape the edge pretty easy too. Just find a router bit that is close to original shape and zip around edge. Great work and is nice to see something avoid going to landfill. Someone will get a lot of use out of that and you can make a few bucks for tour time. Thanks for video!

Thanks for your video! I’m working on flipping a side table and it’s made out of particle board/ MDF (don’t really know how to tell difference) and it was some water damage at the bottom and some wood fussy. Everyone one keeps recommending shellac based primer for MDF water damage rather than water based. I already have bulls eyes 123 primer and was hoping to use what I already have. This is the older video I came across that has used water based primer. Does using water based primer leads to swelling in the MDF?
Good video! U need some tighter clamps lol 3 on that corner get it clamped kinda funny I have one like that as well but purchased some moy long ago that are much stronger
Thank you for doing this video, and posting it! The door of our entryway closet is MDF. It got wet at the bottom edge, and is buckled out. I did not want to have to replace it. I wondered if there was a way to repair it. So, thank you very much!
I am Beatrice,,,Dodds wife,,,I’m the one one the furniture repair/ paint sites,,,thanks for the tip,,I thought the table was to be trashed,,,now I’m going to give it a try
I just started a table today. The corner is swollen above and on the bottom of the trim piece. It has laminate on the top. So if I understand you. I should remove trim and sand the table till flush with the res tof top and bottom. I can round edge.
I have a particle board nightstand and the top layer is almost gone. I can see the particle board more than the "wood" layer. Can I sand, primer, sand and paint? Thanks!
I'm not into furniture flipping, but this is a BIG help! My bedroom furniture got damaged while moving. It's made of this stuff and it was NoT a cheap set. I cringe at the thought of replacing it but now I have options 🙃 Tyfs!
Hi Niccole. Thanks for watching. If you watch some of my videos you will see that it is really quite easy. I roll or brush the paint and finish on so it is something you CAN do inside with a drop cloth under the furniture.
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit all depends on how we use it. Chipboard too don't last long if it comes in contact with heat or water. That was why you're repairing it. Good quality wood is anytime more lasting then chipboard esp Ikea wood.
Hi PAula. I used 60-80 initially when sanding the top because it was so very badly damaged. Then when it was flat, I switched to 150 and then 240-320 to close the pores. That is how you get a smooth finish. The top feels like course sandpaper after you use the 60-80. Then after the 150-180 grit it feels a lot more smooth BUT when you use the 240-320 (or higher) it is smooth like glass. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
I was wondering the same thing bc had read in a cabinet painting group that you need to use oil based primer on mdf bc water based can cause it to swell. Is that not the case actually? Now I’m confused lol
Hi- No I have had no problem with the water from water based primer causing the particle board or mdf to swell. Just like I have never had a problem with water based chalk paint causing it to swell. I believe you have to let the water sit on the particle board for an extended period of time before it will swell. However, if you have any concerns, just use oil based primer and you are good to go!
Hi David- the safest and best primer is shellac based. However, it has such a strong odor that I am concerned a bout inhaling it so I try to avoid the shellac based. Instead I prefer the oil based since it has less odor.
Hi Natalie- see my response to David. You can see in the video that the top is very flat- the water based primer and water based chalk paint did NOT cause any swelling. However, if you are concerned, simply use an oil based primer.
Thank you soo much. I am trying to redo my kitchen cabinets in my mobile home, which are also damaged particle board. You helped me soo much. Thank you ❤️🎨🖌🎨❤️

Everyone one keeps recommending shellac based primer for MDF water damage rather than water based. I already have bulls eyes 123 primer and was hoping to use what I already have. This is the older video I came across that has used water based primer. Does using water based primer leads to swelling in the MDF?
Soooo informative!!! Very great video. Thank you for spreading your knowledge!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video , I really appreciate how you explained every bit , you earned a new subscriber today .

The door of our entryway closet is MDF. It got wet at the bottom edge, and is buckled out. I did not want to have to replace it. I wondered if there was a way to repair it. So, thank you very much!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the tips and inspiration. Lovely result, it was so worth your effort. 😊
Thanks so much! 😊
I am Beatrice,,,Dodds wife,,,I’m the one one the furniture repair/ paint sites,,,thanks for the tip,,I thought the table was to be trashed,,,now I’m going to give it a try
Hi Beatrice- glad I could be of some help. Let me know how it turns out!
I just started a table today. The corner is swollen above and on the bottom of the trim piece. It has laminate on the top. So if I understand you. I should remove trim and sand the table till flush with the res tof top and bottom. I can round edge.
Thank you so much 💓 💗 💛
which model sander is that?
Hi Habib, I use a Ryobi battery operated sander so I do not have to deal with a cord. I certainly like it!
A great tutorial! I have a desk that is pretty now I can make it even more so.
Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
Thank you! I have a sander, but it's not orbital. What one do you have? What is the hose with it?
It is a ryobi battery operated sander. It is connected to a small inexpensive shop vac.
Totally loved this video! Learned so much!!!!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video. Great music.
Many thanks!
Looks great. Thanks for information.
Thanks you for your kind words. Keep watching!
I cringe at the thought of replacing it but now I have options 🙃
Tyfs!
Hi Niccole. Thanks for watching. If you watch some of my videos you will see that it is really quite easy. I roll or brush the paint and finish on so it is something you CAN do inside with a drop cloth under the furniture.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
How much all the material like primer etc cost to restore the table top? Maybe cheaper just changed the top piece is to use adhesive waterproof paper.
You mean contact paper? The way I repaired it will last 25-50 years. Contact paper may last 6 months. Thanks for watching!
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit all depends on how we use it. Chipboard too don't last long if it comes in contact with heat or water. That was why you're repairing it. Good quality wood is anytime more lasting then chipboard esp Ikea wood.
What grit paper did you use to to scruff the surface
I usually use 150 grit.
Great idea!
Glad you think so!
Beautiful ♥️👍
Thank you! Cheers!
your text said 150 grit sand paper when you did the underside of the edge...did you switch to 80 or 60 when sanding the top?
You are really good at this ands great Teacher
Thank you Elizabeth! Who is that adorable baby? You grandson or child? CUTIE PIE!!!
Does the water based primer ever give you issues of absorption with the MDF?
I was wondering the same thing bc had read in a cabinet painting group that you need to use oil based primer on mdf bc water based can cause it to swell. Is that not the case actually? Now I’m confused lol
I would be inclined to use shellac based for everything
You are so talented! Thanks for a great video.
Thank you! Cheers!
Thank you soo much. I am trying to redo my kitchen cabinets in my mobile home, which are also damaged particle board. You helped me soo much. Thank you ❤️🎨🖌🎨❤️
Hi Sara.Wow! I am so glad you can use this info!!
Repairing my mobile home cabinets was daunting. I’d been looking and looking how to do them … now I do!!
Thank You 😊
