James Brown performs and dances to "Night Train" to a live audience on TAMI Show.
James Brown recorded "Night Train" with his band in 1961. His performance replaced the original lyrics of the song with a shouted list of cities on his East Coast touring itinerary. The song became a hit, charting #5 R&B and #35 Pop.
The TAMI Show is a 1964 concert that included performances by numerous popular rock and roll and R&B musicians from the United States and England. TAMI stood for both "Teenage Awards Music International" and "Teen Age Music International".
The concert was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium on October 28 and 29, 1964. Free tickets were distributed to local high school students. The best footage from each of the two concert dates was edited into the film, which was released on December 29, 1964. The TAMI Show is particularly well known for James Brown's performance featuring his legendary dance moves and explosive energy.
Video transcript:
I want, I want. A night train. Got it good. I got it good. I got it good. Let me be. What are we going to do now. Baltimore, Maryland, Philadelphia, New York City. Take it home. New Orleans. The home of the blues. One more time for the night train. Are you ready for the night train? Are you ready for the night train? Are you ready for the night train? Are you ready for the night train? Night, night, night, night, night, night, night, night. One more time for the night train. Are you ready for the night train? Night, night, night, night, night, night, train.

A perfect example of why this man was regarded as "the hardest working man in show business " when he was alive.
The footwork, the timing, showmanship, everything was on point!
His band was working
THE FAMOUS FLAMES were the Original Vocal Group that James Brown first began his career with.
The Funk Fans don’t want you to know this. They continue to spread and perpetuate the LIE that The FLAMES were his INSTRUMENTAL FUNK BAND.
****THIS IS NOT TRUE!,****
THE FAMOUS FLAMES are a SINGING GROUP….NOT A FUNK BAND
…and they are RIGHT HERE ON STAGE NEXT TO JAMES: BOBBY BENNETT, LLOYD STALLWORTH, and BOBBY BYRD. JAMES BROWN was the Lead Singer of THE FLAMES.
JAMES BROWN was inducted into the ROCK and ROLL HALL OF FAME in 1986
THE FAMOUS FLAMES were inducted in 2012.
His INSTRUMENTAL BAND/ JBs were NOMINATED, but NOT INDUCTED, in 2015.
And a pissed of James Brown
True that, but can we please stop misusing the cliche "on point"? It makes folks look like they're giving a Yelp review of some over-priced, effete restaurant.
This is absolutely one of the most badass things I've ever seen.
Should of let James & The Famous Flames close
And it being in black & white makes it’s even better
Nobody knew that there was a little kid watching, learning, and absorbing all of this. He would become the King of pop.
Michael Jackson
Yup!!
Was this the exact show mj first seen James dance?
And diddle kids

F**ckin incredible performance. No backing tracks. No ridiculous auto-tune. Just pure talent through and through.
Best comment!
Only backing track was those killer horns and the funky drummer drumming
Real talk Fam
These were the good ole days of real music and talent.

Pure power. No artist in any genre today can match tthis!

@@juanlael4474 in the Fifties & Sixties he was called "MISTER DYNAMITE".
Get it James... He made it look so Easy... He had everybody jumping.
His legs sometimes VIBRATED because he was moving so fast. Just...wow. A few years ago I was hanging at my parent’s house and we started watching James Brown on UA-cam. They grew up watching him as in James was performing and making music whist they were coming up. I have never in my life seen my dad so giddy. This is a 70 something year old man that fought in Vietnam at 18 was freaking fanboy’ing. The other artist that he would get hyped on (still does) is Michael Jackson because duh! Just…wow. You know, everyone will say that Micheal Jackson has a lot of influence on artist from ANY genre but they tend to forget where he learned it from.
So legendary. That footwork is amazing
There are NO words to describe what I just witnessed.......WOW
NIGHT TRAIN I LOVE THIS SONG..... WHO'S STILL HERE IN 2019???
Me!
He was unbelievable when he was in his prime... The greatest entertainer...
This is incredible! Now I see why Michael Jackson loved him so much! Rest in peace to the Godfather of Soul!
Don't forget Prince. Both artists embodied James throughout their careers.
Davina Taylor I agree
+Davina Taylor ,
Walter Lee II love this man also. Michael got me into him
And king of pop
I’m still trying to figure out how James Brown’s moves were even physically possible... Just speechless every time I watch this concert. Mr. Brown was truly incredible - one in a billion of you ask me.
Any guy who can do a split, right?
I agree…no one like the 🐐
Àaàaaaaaàww
I know! He even had the band clappin' for real! I mean, gosh-o-mighty that made me smile! :)

James Brown at his prime nobody can touch him
"Hardest working man of showbusiness"
It's so obvious when you see him on stage, this quality of the performance is just incredible. And it's not only James Brown at the top, the Famous Flames and the band are at the same level.
"I teached them all they know but not all I know" he said about Jackson and Prince and other. I believe in it so much !
When I met Mr. Brown at the airport near Cincinnati where he recorded many of his LPs, all I could do was smile while shaking his hand and said, "Thank you for your music, all of it." Brown, up close and personal like then said, "Thank ya, baby....thank ya."

Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones has claimed that choosing to follow Brown & the Famous Flames on the TAMI Show was the worst mistake of their careers, because no matter how well they performed, they could not top him.
Prince and MJ can't follow JB...nobody can.
Hardly anything to directly do with this, but "Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones" was JB's first answer to Letterman in 1982, the question being something like "Are there any other acts that can summon the same kind of energy and excitement as you do?" That's quite an honor. He also listed the great Jerry Lee Lewis, which made me very happy (actually, those two were the extent of his "list," plus agreeing with an audience member who shouted out Bruce Springsteen).
im sure their manager and/or record label quickly reminded them of a certain advantage that made that so called
mistake of little consequence to commercial success in these great united states
Wouldn't have mattered if they went first...this cat burned way too bright.

And the best live performance of all time goes to.....🙏🏾
They say other acts never wanted to follow James Brown and I see why this dude lit the Stage on fire DAMM
From what I understand the Stones followed him.
The Stones agent wouldn't let them follow on schedule.
Created a "equipment problem" that delayed it by 30+ mins.
From what I read, Mick Jagger looked at his manager/agent and said (because James Brown was the "opener" for the Stones in that show) "How in the (f word) are we supposed to follow that?" You don't
That lady at 2:55 would've been me.... just standing there in awe soaking it in. That man is BAD!!! 🔥🔥

I swear to God if this live version of Night Train don't move you, you could be declared legally dead! I had the extreme pleasure of seeing James and the Flames over a dozen times live in the 60's and 70's when he toured thru my hometown of Dayton OH. Everyone had fun at these gigs too. Us rockin' whities and soulfull black kids!!!
The Greatest Version!!! Man he had the joint jumping
im 70, and i'll NEVER get tired of watching James at the TAMI show gig...
Was you in the audience on this particular video?
Best comment
I am from the Dayton area myself. Do you have any idea about who Alfred Corley was? I know he was the tenor saxophone player for The Famous Flames. Al is in this Night Train video matter of fact, but you dont see much of him in this. There is very little information on Alfred. I know he died sometimes during the 1960s. The reason why I am trying to find out who Al Corley was is because I found a very rare 7" 45rpm 1 of 2 pressings with Alfred Corley. Also there were several 45s with artists from the Famous Flames doing solo and they all include Al Corley. Yes, I found these between Dayton and Columbus......
Mr. Brown was a beautiful person. He loved children. He was nice to mine when we would go to all of his shows if they were near. We loved him!
I see how Prince got his moves😉James your the man🔥
James brown invented almost everything, break dancing and hip hop.

Michael Jackson as well
Unbelievable section from 2:12 to 2:44 when he dances away from the mic then he and the entire band comes back at the precise moment (2:44). Incredible to see a performer and band doing so much so completely in sync. Absolutely amazing.....just killed it the entire performance. One of the greatest entertainers in history at the top of his game.
James Brown drilled his band like a military operation and had an eagle eye for mistakes - there's another clip of him playing in Paris where Clyde Stubblefield does a solo, but he looks terrified because he has to keep precisely on the beat.
insane footwork
Mick Jagger saw this show... and was completley UN-done !! Music/Art/Dance truly the Universal Language of the Soul. James Brown forever!!
Yet they save moves like Jagger, I rather groove like Brown any day yell
No one will ever come close to James . Just think of how he influenced the industry. Nno one will ever come close to him !
Not true.
James Brown knew how to put a band together and lead it. Incomparable!
I love the way the girl at 02:53 is standing and just staring at James like she's seeing a miracle. The full clip of this night is available on UA-cam. I personally reckon James gave it 100% because the Rolling Stones were also on the same bill and he wanted to show them he's
they apparently were like how do we follow that!? Amazing profromance from James and his band. The God father of Soul.
almost 40 years ago, I saw him at penn state-700 blacks and five whites. he was the real deal. 90 minutes of singing, dancing, and hooping. the best. the absolute best.

James Brown. The man who officially invented hip hop. My hero. RIP to The Godfather Of Soul ✌🏾
Actually Hip Hop is a combination of a Three Pillars- James' music obviously, his revolution of The One. But the 2nd pillar, and I think you'll agree, is the mentality and attitude of "the Greatest", Muhammad Ali. And the third was where these two culture at large forces merged- the very distinct energy and swagger of the NYC, specifically the Bronx in the early 1970s. Without the first two there simply is no such thing as hip-hop. But the crucible of NYC, especially the Black Spades street gang and the local party culture they governed, along with the smaller revolution of sampling the break, by Grandmaster Flash, created the very distinct, bold and new creation of American culture that became Hip-Hop. Crazy that James, Ali, Hendrix and Coltrane were all doing revolutionizing the world with genius within the same two or three year period. 💯💯💯
@@cavaleermountaineer3839 hmm!....surely you realize that the island of Jamaica is where "toasting" (rappin') originated. Clive "Herc" is of Jamaican decent, Flash is from Barbados, Artist like U-Roy, Big Youth, I-Roy, Dillinger etc "toasted" over rock steady instrumentals! Huge sound systems with the dj as a integral part, huge weekend yard parties were imitated and brought to N.Y. specifically the Bronx! This is the foundation of what we call rap today!
@@a.c.6475 Oh here we go, some lapdog island Caribbean trying to claim something. Why do foreigners, whether yall or Irish or Germans or Mexicans, have to come to AMERICA to become relevant or to do something noteworthy? Like that overrated street hustler bum Marcus Garvey. WHY did he have to come HERE to become known or relevant at all? And what happened to him when he went home??? But I digress....Yall mfers are so delusional, like little lap-dogs yapping and yapping. But I'm glad you asked for a lesson. "Rapping", meaning someone rhyming over music, was happening back in the 40s. That's probably where whatever immigrant shyt you're talking about happening in NYC got their ideas from. We've been doing this for a long, long time. Especially after the global revolution of Muhammad Ali. Then in the 1960s a North Carolina proto-rapper made some songs that became popular. Probably another source for whatever your people were doing. But none of that, whatever import shyt you're talking about included, was HIP-HOP. And I'm glad you brought up the fraud "Herc" who made a name for himself playing James Brown songs. Herc, and all other DJs, was under the direct protection of the street gang that ran the Bronx- the Black Spades. They singlehandedly though unintentionally created the youth culture in the Bronx that was the key to the emerging proto-Hip-Hop.
@@a.c.6475 As for the sound system parties and duels, they were ALREADY happening in NYC all through the five boroughs. Immigrants from wherever were invited to participate if they could. And here's what I also don't understand about your immigrant delusions. Flash was born and bred Bronxdale projects. What in the heck makes you think the tiny, no-name island of Barbados had ANYTHING to do with his musical development as he studied R&B and Funk in NYC? That's as ridiculous as a child who's parents were from the hills of Spain but who was born and raised in in ancient ROME talking about his backwoods, bumpkin origins having something to do with his development. I think yall do this because you literally have nothing to talk about for yourselves and because you have some bizarre need to try to compare yourselves to Americans. It's so stupid. AMERICAN music is what shaped yalls music, especially Jamaican music. Before James Brown moved the whole world to the One, everyone was on the Jazz-based TWO. That corny shyt Jamaican parents and grandparents called SKA was all on the TWO. Same thing with our Blues. They heard it and emulated it. This what they themselves say but they try to call us "brothers and sisters" when nothing could be further from the truth. We don't know shyt about yall and don't need or care to. So when James moved the world to the ONE, Jamaican music followed. The Jamaican style called "Roots" obviously came from decades of hearing Jazz, James Brown. And the same applies to Cuban Salsa- all American derivatives. Just like your systems of government and government organization, at least the the appearances.
@@a.c.6475 Face it, yall, like everyone else on this planet, live in an American world. A world shaped by 1776 and everything that followed. So if you're fortunate enough to get here and actually contribute to the greater glory of America, consider yourself lucky and privileged. But the facts are James Brown, Muhammad Ali and the street culture and style of NYC created the conditions for Hip-Hop. Not some immigrant parties with people listening to some corny Jazz derived instrumentals. And yes, Rocksteady had already made the change to The ONE. The American influence moves that fast. If his mama's island origins was any sort of influence why didn't Flash develop his DJing and sampling to that shyt? Why didn't Herc play that shyt at parties? Why doesn't he claim to have "brought Rocksteady to America" and WE liked it and emulated the style? The reality is the REVERSE. George Clinton, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sly and the Family, not even getting into Jazz, were revolutionizing MUSIC. Wasn't nobody interested in yalls little hick tunes. THAT is why Flash never talks about "Bermuda" or wherever his mother was from. He talks about the South Bronx. He talks about R&B and "the best part of the song". There WAS no "loop" in yalls corny shyt. Flash is a Bronx thoroughbred unlike that fraud Herc. But Herc wasn't born and bred here sooooo..... Here's the earliest rappers....1940s. ua-cam.com/video/RUAzLpG8sf8/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/XNzKZ7lJRUc/v-deo.html
And they sang and harmonized too. Don't hate too hard homeboy. It's better to emulate, like your people do. We are One of One.
