Nice!! Great signal to Victoria, Australia! I’m not on much at the moment, due to health reasons. Once I shake off this rotten cold, I’ll be on more often. A long time ago, I went to spend Christmas with my family. I took my old clunker IC-718 Icom radio, Kenwood atu, a home made 4:1 balun, along with a home made long wire antenna. A sister’s boyfriend told me there was no way I would get a signal out beyond the power lines. He was made to eat his words, when he heard me talking to a guy in Queensland. He wasn’t happy when I told him the frequency group he used on marine hf was fixed, and I had access to over 20 million frequencies I could use under my license. He then came back with my not being able to transmit worldwide. I told him I often did just that. Main thing is that we have fun with the hobby, and we are learning at the same time.
My first mast arrives today, and I've collected all the other pieces I need, I think, to start playing with wires finally. Now, if only the local weather would moderate so I can safely be outside to play!

Top notch as always, Walt! Came across a video by G5TM discussing the W3EDP design. The mini version is enticing. 4:1 unun, 4.25 of ladder line, hot side attached to 16.75 wire, the ground side free standing. 40-10. Seems to be in the wheelhouse of this antenna and the Coastal. I look forward to your video on this one ;) I may give it a go.
Good morning. Another great video. Thank you. 40 meters works better in the dark and 20 meters toward the day for me, recently. During IOTA the 20-meter band was busy with those operators on my G90. From watching your videos, I have a 29 ft. vertical with the DX Commander and a 41 ft sloper attached to a tree in my backyard. @COASTALWAVESWIRES What do you do with the antennas you build, after the video shoot? Do you store them as a kit? Reutilize wires for other projects, like you did in this video? Recycle the wire?
Do you have any other ideas for what you can do with a 4:1 unun? I have that same one and did a Rybakov. I have a 6' wood fence that runs about 130' around my property and was thinking of trying a random wire end-fed or off center dipole type of thing. Will the 4:1 unun work with something like that?
I think you would have better success on that fence with a 9:1 and long wire. I’ve found that the 4:1 is pretty much effective for the shorter random wire lengths under 25’
You could probably get it to work with a decent tuner. I’ve found that a 4:1 works for 25’ and shorter random wire lengths and a 9:1 for 29’ and longer
According to the law of physics, an inductor creates a magnetic field around itself. The magnetic field dampens all impulse interference around itself (coming from household appliances and passing vehicles). Therefore, an antenna with an inductor is the best antenna in urban conditions. On the other hand, the inductive and capacitive resistance of antennas is many times worse than the purely active ohmic resistance of the antenna at the resonant frequency. Therefore, it turns out that in urban conditions, the best antenna is a vertical antenna with an inductor, which can be tuned to different frequency ranges.
Walt. Thanks for another good video. I would like to invest in a POTA antenna. Have everything except the dx commander pole and mount. What type mount do you use. On the beach a fishing pole holder in sand, but in dirt. What type holder would you recommend. Would like to hear more about the DX Commander poles you use and hardware. And if comfortable with sharing, where to purchase.
Thanks! I have actually used the fishing pole holders and beach umbrella holders in the dirt as well. Great questions and I probably need to put together a video cover this. I did something similar not too long ago. Here's the video: ua-cam.com/video/wnQQ-ypFte0/v-deo.htmlsi=jn4A7O9qB2iX15vJ
it was actually just a 25 foot wire that was not elevated it was laying on the sand and into the edge of the water. Length was really not important, just used an old piece of wire I had.
@@ChrisMichael-x8j when very close and next to salt water the length doesn't really matter. I typically use a single 17' counterpoise but just had a 25' piece left over and threw it out there. When I build this thing inland I typically put 5 or six counterpoise wires spread out under the antenna and I usually make them 5 meters long. I really never do elevated counterpoise because I mostly operate by saltwater.
I wonder how that would compare to a MFJ-1979 with a tuned raised counterpoise? or... on the hood mounted mag mount? Best 73's Dan K1YPB - On the air since 1962.
Hi Walt, I'm greatly enjoying a lot of your videos! I'm hoping to build this antenna soon, but I'm new to HF as I just recently got my general and I only have an old radio my dad gave me that does not have a tuner. Would you mind letting me know what bands should be usable with this antenna without tuning it? Thanks in advance!
incredible how much contacts you make using these antennas. I think you have a salt water amplifier ;-) Same antennas over here on soil don't perform as well... 73 Phil ON4VP
I'm trying to get Europe contacts but haven't been successful. What time of day, antenna type and watts are you using to make these contacts? I'm in San Diego, CA
@@robert8342-w7x from the East Coast right now Europe is late afternoon into the evening on the 20 meter band and I pretty much only use low power (20 watts). Europe usually rolls in earlier on the 15 meter band around midday. This is typical in the summer. In the winter I’ve worked Europe all day long on 20 meters.
@COASTALWAVESWIRES thanks for the information and I hope to get you in my log one day. I was hoping someone in your comments is on the west coast to help me out.
I’m a pretty new ham. There are no Elmer’s by me. The club in my area does not have regular meetings. I’ve been learning a lot from your videos. Thank you. Question tho. Does the length of the counterpoise matter?
Thanks! No, if the counterpoise are on the ground the length really doesn’t matter. Just get down as much as you can. Raised counterpoise have to be tuned. 73, Walt
Hi Walt anther cool antenna but I remember you done a video a while ago using the same length wire 17.6 feet but you used a 9.1 and only a 3 foot radial so I’m a bit confused now 🤔
@@barbsblogs1563 no you are remembering correctly. I did a follow up video after that changing the unun to a 4:1. That antenna is called the Coastal 20
That’s why this channel is called Coastal Waves & Wires. I have built this antenna well inland in a backyard in Poland and had great results, I mentioned that in this video and linked the video I did in the description.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES it would take more than one person to make it happen safely. if you can imagine a 50 foot pole would cause significant damage to everything in the falling range. the pole is a multi section pole that is short enough to be carried in a pipe rack on top of a truck, then reach about 50 or so feet up. you could almost put a 320 meter 1/4 wave or a 640 meter 1/8 wave antenna on it. < imagine those radials> that would be a POTA for the record books, eh

Thanks fort= the great videos. Have you tried your 17-5 design with a whip? Do you use the 4:1 with it?
thanks
Thanks! No I haven’t, I’ve been looking into a way to attach a 4:1 to a whip. Might do it soon
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thanks
Hi Walt, Just wondering what coax feed line you use?
I use the Chameleon 50’ coax with integrated choke: chameleonantenna.com/shop-here/ols/products/cha-50-coax-with-integrated-rfi-choke
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thanks Walt 👍 love the channel, have a great day 73s VK5
@robmcguinness2818 thank you! 73
Walt, looks like you have a single elevated counterpoise on the 17.5 at the shore. What length is it and was it elevated?
it was actually just a 25 foot wire that was not elevated it was laying on the sand and into the edge of the water. Length was really not important, just used an old piece of wire I had.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES why 25’?
Would be interesting to find out
Hi Walt, I'm greatly enjoying a lot of your videos!
I think you have a salt water amplifier ;-)
Same antennas over here on soil don't perform as well...
73, Walt
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thank you. Good to know.
I hope you got some chowder at Iggy’s! 73
LOL my blood type is becoming Iggy’s Chowder I’ve eaten so much of it. I’m renting a place 2 blocks away
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES so use a 3 foot radial or a 25 foot ?
OK, I'm wondering what is the advantage of this build vs a rybokoff (sp?)
Smaller pole, lighter and easier to get up. This one is a decent antenna but the Rybakov is a better performer especially on 40 meters.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Mahalo!
Good Morning Walt. KO4HPC 73
Good morning my friend!
Location, location, location. Where you set up plays a big part of this antenna's performance.
That’s why this channel is called Coastal Waves & Wires. I have built this antenna well inland in a backyard in Poland and had great results, I mentioned that in this video and linked the video I did in the description.
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES Thanks. I know the water places a big part in transmission distances.
Good stuff....you wake up waaayyyy too early though.
Thanks! Yes I get up before the roosters!
I have a RHON base antenna pole extendable to about 50 feet Imagine 80M qrp with a fully extend3ed and guyed Rohn that I can move as needed.
@@pyreneesfarm7818 that’s awesome
@@COASTALWAVESWIRES it would take more than one person to make it happen safely. if you can imagine a 50 foot pole would cause significant damage to everything in the falling range. the pole is a multi section pole that is short enough to be carried in a pipe rack on top of a truck, then reach about 50 or so feet up. you could almost put a 320 meter 1/4 wave or a 640 meter 1/8 wave antenna on it. < imagine those radials> that would be a POTA for the record books, eh
Awesome work and so easy 🤟 73’s 2E0OOW 😎🇦🇺
