They were on the Andy Williams show.Andy asked them how they got their name. They explained they were doing a,show down south and at the end of the show some guy from the audience yelled out "That's righteous brother" and they've been known by that name ever since.
I'm not sure why microphones were smaller back then. But this recording was the most air-time played song of the 20th century, so it's not too surprising if you've heard it before. Also, it's known from the kareoke scene in the movie Top Gun.
You wondered if there was anything more recent than this 60’s era song. The lead singer on this one, Bill Medley, sang the lead on the Dirty Dancing “ I’ve had the Time of My life” played during the final dance scene with Baby and Johnny on stage alone. If you have ever seen that movie it’s one scene you will never forget.
The most played song of of 20th century. So nice you are charmed by this amazing duo. The deep and sensual Bill’ voice in perfect harmony with the contrasting sharp but smooth countertenor voice of the lovely Bobby ❤
Keep reacting to the Righteous they are amazing and so diversified You’ll allways blow up 🎉 from the torrid Bill’s Wanna make love to you or Bobby’s Summertime, to the flawless Never walk alone, Ebb Tide, and if you are so enthusiastic with Bobby’s high notes … ohhh you have plenty songs where you stop and go back to listen again and again 😍 He is amaizing and never heard any other doing that so perfectly !
You need to listen to them sing You're my Soul and Inspiration! These guys were awesome when they came out in 1964. I was in high school. We went crazy with their voices. They were awesome!!!!❤❤❤
Since this song had the most radio play in the 20th century it was sampled a lot. The boom ba boom baboom ba boom is even in the movie Grease & the song was in the movie Top Gun. They were regulars on this Shindig TV show from 1964-1966. Since you enjoyed Bobby's higher pleading "Please" in this song, then from this same show you have to hear his solo of "Summertime". He gets into it & hits some crazy notes. Hear them both sing "Soul & Inspiration" on the Hullabaloo TV show. Then check them out on the Ed Sullivan TV show singing You'll Never Walk Alone" ua-cam.com/video/xBTeyKtfrXw/v-deo.html Their voices together are dynamic & their solos that they did on every album shows how talented the Righteous Brothers are. They were inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame in 2003 b4 Bobby past away. The 1st album I bought with my own money was the Righteous Brothers & saw them around 1965 in IN. Been enjoying their music a long time. Last year I saw Bill Medley (83 now) & his new partner perform in CA to a packed auditorium. Still going strong. Good music stays good music forever.
A lot of people on their reaction videos comment on how small the microphones are they used. They were modern then sized down from the large ones they used in the 40's and 50's that had stands and were not hand held. All I can say about the one and only, Fantastic Righteous Brothers is, Small Mic, Gigantic Talent.
The mikes are small because there are no electronics in them... they just connect the singer to the amps. This song was written for the Righteous brothers by the great songwriters Mann and Weil and it was tailored to their voices. It's been used in a lot of movies and covered by many artists, including Elvis. For length is was longer than the average song for the times, when songs were held to two and a half minutes. This one was almost four and the running time was listed incorrectly so that it would get airplay.
The most recorded song of the 20th Century. This was taped in late 1964, just before colors were invented. It was pretty drab before colors were invented but we didn't realize it at the time. Unchained Melody was taped a few months later after colors were invented - big difference. :-) Cher was a background singer for this performance. My all time favorite Righteous Brothers' song is You'll Never Walk Alone, very short but great.
They are not biologically related, as Bobby Hatfield explained in the video before his solo performance of "Unchained Melody" "they were singing in a club down south, and after their performance someone in the audience shouted to them that's righteous brother" so they adopted that name "the Righteous Brothers" and the rest as they say is beautiful musical history
Songs from the sixties and seventies, and even later - the radio era - tended to be shorter and to fade out at the end because that was what worked best with radio disk jockies switching from one song to another on a turntable and for advertising. The fade out gave the DJ time to smoothly switch to a new track and songs that stayed within a narrow time limit made it easier to arrange a playlist that, with a specific number of timed advertising slots, fit smoothly into an hour. The switch first to computerized song management at radio stations and then to streaming has allowed artists more leeway to record longer songs without fade outs without worrying that they would flop because they didn't get airplay.
So, the mic thing. I don’t know anything about the technology of it, but through the 60’s and 70’s, microphones were slender and tall (check out 70’s game shows). As the 80’s turned into the 90’s, wireless became the thing and it ranged from big mics to tiny headsets. Best I can offer.
The Righteous Brothers and the two you've heard (and both have been used in many movies) are among the most romantic songs ever recorded. THey were playing a lot of black clubs in their early days, and they'd walk on stage and get booed because -- white boys nobody expected much.... Story goes they finished a set and a guy in the audience said "That's Righteous, Brothers!" and they took the name.
Bill Medley is the tall man & Bobby Hatfield is the shorter man, easy to tell them apart. There was no auto tune used when they recorded their songs onto vinyl records. 1964 is the year this song was released.
Bobby Bobby Bobby! He always had a surprise for us. Check out the A side of Unchained Melody which was 'Hung on You'. Too risque for the sixties is my guess on why it never took off and maybe why the DJs turned it over and made the B side a hit. Bobby Hatfield 1940-2003 may he rest in peace.
Good! 1964. They're really not brothers. Young people kill me talking about their little mics. Today they have big mics and they're screaming like no one can hear them. Back then, everyone waited for their time to sing. They didn't try to out do each other. Back then, records were like 2 - 2 1/2 minute's long. Anything over that was too long. They used to perform at a black Marine Base and after one of their performances a black marine yelled, "You're righteous brother", and that's where they got their name from.
It was 1965 and called blue eyed Soul. This was the most played song of the 20th Century. Try You’ll Never Walk Alone. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley are equally talented but not real brothers. They did a show one night and as they were leaving someone in the audience yelled. “That’s Righteous Brother. Then they had a name.
I heard the story they were in a black night club and a dude in the audience yelled your really righteous brother thus the name but that could be false
I've watched a couple of interviews with Bill Medley and he confirmed that that's how they came up with their name. Both he & Bobby had been part of a singing group called The Paramours in the early '60s but when just the two of them would sing at clubs in the Orange County & Los Angeles area they didn't have any official name they performed under.. a small group of U.S. Marines stationed at El Toro Marine Base in Orange Co., Calif. started to go to the clubs to hear them sing. A few of them were Black and had heard that there were these two white guys who were singing R&B, not the usual surfer songs that white kids were singing & listening to at the time, so they went to check them out. After a set one of them said, "That's Righteous, brothers!("Righteous" was a word we used in the 60's to mean "cool", "great", like "Man, that's a righteous car!") Anyway, Bill & Bobby hadn't settled on a stage name for the two of them yet, but when they heard them saying that from the audience, they both thought..hmm, "Righteous Brothers"🤔 & the rest is music legend history!😉 The term "Blue-Eyed Soul originated with them. Bill actually went to the same High School I attended, Santa Ana High in Santa Ana, California.. He was born in '40 & I was born in '59 , but still kinda cool for those of us who went there, lol! I had such a crush on Bill Medley when I was a teenager; still do!😉
The "call and response" section that you like so much has it's root's in Baptist church music. If you want to hear a group that made this a part of it's core music listen to Sam and Dave who were performing at about the same time that this song was released.
They were singing in clubs down south and the audience would yell out, "That's righteous, brothers!" So when they started making records, that's what they named themselves.
Heard that one reason the the mic's were smaller is because they were made of heavy metal only. No plastics or other such lightweight materials. Possibly 😮
Called "The Righteous Brothers" (though not brothers), because at an early show, an audience member stood up & shouted to them, "That's RIGHTEOUS, brothers!". Their music is known as "blue-eyed soul". Thanks for your reaction.
They are not actuality brothers. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Melody. They were in their early career in a black club in the south. We they finished singing someone in the audience stood up and said " thats Rightious brother and thats how they got their name
Mics 🎤 🎤 were small because they were made of metal and bigger ones would be heavy to hold. Omg the shirts are NOT tee shirts, they were called dress shits.
You may have heard it if you watched the movie Top Gun. 😊 Blue Eyed Soul. ❤❤
If you like the high voice, listen to Bobby Hatfield sing Summertime
They were on the Andy Williams show.Andy asked them how they got their name. They explained they were doing a,show down south and at the end of the show some guy from the audience yelled out "That's righteous brother" and they've been known by that name ever since.

No auto tune😊
I am 71 and grew up with this music. I think the sixties and early seventies were a great era for great music and songs. Thanks for playing.
The story is that black Marines came in to the club and after hearing them sing yelled your righteous brothers!!
Thaey have on Tuxedo's and a white SHIRT and a real bow tie and it was i 1964
Tom Cruise and the gang sang this song in “Top Gun” to woo the girl.
You"d love the platters. And try kd Lang singing "Crying" or Sarah Vaugh singing "Broken Heartèd Melòdy" or Glady knight 😊and the Pips
Just talented son my time
One of their backup singers was a young Cher.

fun fact, one of those background singers was Glen Cambell, another was a 15 year old named Cher.
I did not know that!!!!!!
That deep voice is Bill Medley is still alive, the tenor the blonde guy passed away awhile back his name Bobby Hatfield
Ive been listening to these guys since 1964,I'll never tire of them!
At the end of a show a guy yelled out your 'righteous brothers' hence thier name.
Keep reacting to the Righteous they are amazing and so diversified You’ll allways blow up 🎉 from the torrid Bill’s Wanna make love to you or Bobby’s Summertime, to the flawless Never walk alone, Ebb Tide, and if you are so enthusiastic with Bobby’s high notes … ohhh you have plenty songs where you stop and go back to listen again and again 😍 He is amaizing and never heard any other doing that so perfectly !

part of the music was used in a duet in grease

If you like the high notes listen to the one that sings tenor, Bobby Hatfield, belt out SUMMERTIME BLUES

this is 1964 there was No auto tune
Listen again and you'll hear the choir all the way through....nice reaction
Usually they were together but would do solos but still under RB

The Righteous Brothers, Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield, were not actually brothers but they sure made beautiful music together!
Bŕook Benton - A rainy night in Georgia
Cher is one of the background singers.
And Darlene Love I believe!

Watching you is like watching someone tasting a rare vintage wine.
Please do yourself a favor and listen to the Righteous Brothers singing "I Just Wanna Make Love To You." You won't be sorry.

The Righteous Brothers are icons! This song is so very awesome! Love your reactions.

They are wearing tuxedos!!! No T shirts, dress shirts. Probably wearing cuff links as well. Men could dress back in the day.
Bill Medley just had "that voice". Like hot chocolate!
Now you need to hear them sing You'll never Walk Alone. They will blow your name in that one
Bill Medley is the tall man & Bobby Hatfield is the shorter man, easy to tell them apart. There was no auto tune used when they recorded their songs onto vinyl records. 1964 is the year this song was released.
Watch the summertime song

Not Brothers but they're righteous. 😂
Both songs were played in movies before.

If you like whiskey, try my favorite, Booker Noe!! It has Character!!!!

You would love Unchained Melody
They probably used a little dabba Brylcream in their hair.
🤣
Heard that one reason the the mic's were smaller is because they were made of heavy metal only. No plastics or other such lightweight materials. Possibly 😮
This was on the Top Gun soundtrack
Cher is singing in the backup group.
It's quite a classic song. You could have heard it anywhere...
Your 1st time? Got out there and experience real life.
Hall and Oates did this song in the 80's
Tom cruise sang it 1st top gun
Called "The Righteous Brothers" (though not brothers), because at an early show, an audience member stood up & shouted to them, "That's RIGHTEOUS, brothers!". Their music is known as "blue-eyed soul". Thanks for your reaction.
Tom Cruise sang it in Top Gun
EBB TIDE is a good one by them
Another solo by Bobby as well as My Prayer.
This was the most requested song of the 20th century. Corded mikes could be small.
They are not actuality brothers. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Melody. They were in their early career in a black club in the south. We they finished singing someone in the audience stood up and said " thats Rightious brother and thats how they got their name
Never has been about the 'size'' of the mike..... And no, they are not biological brothers.
Mics 🎤 🎤 were small because they were made of metal and bigger ones would be heavy to hold. Omg the shirts are NOT tee shirts, they were called dress shits.
Redo Hall and Oates
They are not brother at all….
Tom Cruise tried to sing this in his first Top gun movie…🙄 And Color TV wasn’t everywhere in those days …🤔
