regarding the fruits vs. vegetables... "fruit" is a strict botanical term like Rhett was saying. Okra is definitely a fruit. But "vegetable" has no botanical meaning; it's a culinary term. Carrots? Those are roots. Potatoes? Those are tubers. Kale? That's a leaf. Brussels sprouts? Tightly compacted leaves.

InTaiwan, you are given fresh fruit at the end of a meal. Oranges are probably the most common, but I have definitely gotten tomatoes as the end of meal fruit.
agroecologist here to say link's right and fruits are defined and veggies are not. veggies can be leaves, roots etc botanically but a fruit will be a fruit even if it's savory

9:00 Tomatoes CAN be EXTREMELY Sweet. Like SUGARY Sweet. A good tomato will taste like you literally sprinkled sugar on it, even when you didnt.
I'm with Link, don't really like tomatoes, though I'll tolerate them if they come already part of the dish. But my dad and friends all put salt on their tomato slices. Like Link was suggesting with the corn.

So strawberries are savory because they go with sweet items such as chocolate and whipped cream. And peanutbutter is savors because of sweet items, unless you put something like sambal on it, then peanutbutter turns sweet because you pair it with a savory thing? I’m not so sure it was smart, he just said it confidently.

People always debate if a tomato is a vegetable or a fruit. It's both! It simply depends on the context. Scientifically? Fruit. Culinarily? Vegetable. Debate over.

Fruit is a scientific term, vegetable is a culinary term. Lots of fruits get classified as a vegetable in most common understanding.

@@JasonAhl Fruit is a category under science. Vegetables are not. Scientists use Roots, Leaves, etc to classify what we would call vegetables.
Peanut butter in particular depends on how much sugar/salt has been added.
A smart man knows tomatoes are fruit. a wise man knows not to put tomatoes in fruit salad.
Chocolate isn’t always sweet.
Chocolade is savory even though it is mostly eaten as sweet, but that sweetness comes from added sugar.

Okra is botanically a fruit actually. About half the things labeled vegetable are actually fruit (olives, pumpkin, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, peas, string beans, etc...)
They have started classifying them as botanical and prepared so the savory fruits are classed as botanically fruits but prepared as vegetables.
I grew up putting ketchup on my eyes as well. learned it from my dad, taught it to my husband and he loves it, too! 💕

Tomatoes can definitely be both sweet and savory. It largely depends on the variety. There are over 10,000 varieties. Some like Sun Sugar and Mr. Stripey are super sweet.

I feel like that as Southeast Asian, we have very muffled line between sweet and savoury. We mostly mix things up and have salty things as dessert and sweet things as main dish. 😂 We even have avocado desserts and make it into a milkshake and we definitely put ketchup on eggs! :D

Rhett is right. We've decided that tomatoes are a fruit based on things that aren't really relevant cause we continue to use them as vegetables and think of them as vegetables. I've never seen tomatoes stored in the fruit bowl for instance. They're grouped with vegetables in most gardens and stores and in recipes. Technically a fruit but practically a vegetable.
