Remembering Marty Cohen, Horologist, Volunteer Emeritus, Friend, 1929 - 2022.
Marty Cohen was a big part of the Charles River Museum team from its earliest days. First and foremost a horologist, Marty’s contributions to the Museum’s watch and clock exhibits were extraordinary and inestimable. His interest in watches initially grew from a desire to “work with small things and tools.” Even after taking leave from regular volunteer duty at the Museum, he kept a workbench where he could regularly tinker.
Marty’s interests and knowledge spanned many and varied topics. One of his loves was the banjo, and he assisted the legendary Pete Seeger in extending the scale of his banjo’s neck. Marty proudly preserved the title Seeger had bestowed upon him, “banjo engineer,” in his email address.
Marty was the Museum’s longest-serving volunteer and, as such, mentored almost every person who worked here over the decades. His well of humor and entertaining anecdotes was almost as deep as his knowledge in watch and clock mechanics, history, and minutiae. If Marty liked you, you knew it and felt honored.
We at the Museum feel honored to have known and loved him
