When this song was originally released, I was probably too young to fully appreciate the genius of Steve Gadd’s improvised “funeral march” for the verses of Paul Simon’s wistful ode to the end of a relationship, but it just seemed perfectly fitting and sounded like no other drum part for a rock song. Thank you for your impeccable cover. The iconic march sections are played with precision and a delicate touch, and the choruses are grooving. Best of luck to you and your family with your move to Los Angeles, and I hope all your dreams come true!
When this song originally came out I grew so sick of it! The local radio station must have played it once every hour for three months. Yeah, you KEDO 1400 (at the time).
The way YOYOKA can channel the greatest drummers of the past 50+ years (John Bonham, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie,…) is truly remarkable! Bravo!
Just one piece of information. Yoyoka's first jazz album is released - Ken Okada Group, "Square One"
It can be found online.
Think of any song, in any genre, and Yoyoka will play it beautifully, honoring the original drummer but adding her personal style. This is a true talent 😊
Glorious interpretation of Steve Gadd's iconic composition!!
Beautifully simple-sounding, yet unmistakable and unique. Yoyoka's attention to detail, by using Steve Gadd's 'traditional grip', warms my heart 👍 Yoyoka's covered all my favourite drummer's at least once now (except Bill Bruford, and Shido's covered him). Thank You Mark T and Byron Butterfield.
Yoyoka, Thank You _Very_ Much.
Best Wishes to You, Shido, and Your Mum and Dad. ☮

There isn't a style of music too difficult for this lady
Very nice. I always found this an easy song to play! It's really tasty and not too technical, but I think it's so different from what most drummers are used to that it is tricky. It reminds me of a bolero.
Steve Gadd will be smiling when he hears this well done Yoyoka
Not exactly "Egyptian Danza" by Gadd but still nice groove.
It is an honor to watch this supremely talented young woman explore the history and possibilities of her instrument and expand her repertoire and chops. Someday I expect we'll be saying, "Remember when Yoyoka WASN'T ruling the studio world, and she was just a kid making UA-cam videos?"
I love the variety of music Yoyoka has been playing. Again, showing her skills yet continuing to grow in musical tastes
It's a female?
@@greer2402 yeah
I’ve said for a couple of years that she’s not the next John Bonham, she’s the next Steve Gadd. She’s finally doing him.
Though, oddly, she’s adding an extra kick drum beat, syncopated just before the second beat, that Gadd doesn’t use and I don’t know why she’s adding it. It gives the song a slightly Latin feel, like a clave, that gets in the way of the more military feel of the original.
The reason she did that is she's like honey badger. She does what she wants and always has. Wish I knew her reason for that choice. The story goes when she was very little about 5 or 6 her Dad's band was rehearsing and she said, unsolicited, it would sound better such and so way. And it did. My father in law said who needs a soft head anyway!?
I feel like Yoyoka lives constantly in the space between tasteful restraint and her exuberant desire to absolutely crush her kit whenever possible.
@@semprini77 well stated...i agree...thats her style in a nutshell..and she can do both expertly. not many players can.
Yoyoka, I was about 12 when this came out, I don’t think there’s no song you can’t play….you’re really that great..
Make sure you dominate the session scene when you get to LA. Good luck! BTW, if you like Steve Gadd, please do a cover of Aja :)
FANTASTIC..
Yoyoka you might wanna check out the work of band and session drummer - AND Foo Fighters new drummer Josh Freese. His contribution to the first two albums of A Perfect Circle are AMAZING.
❤️🗾
Great song choice, excellent groove, and look at you rocking the traditional grip. Very cool.
I hadn’t noticed the grip. Very cool.
Love how solid and non-flashy you are on these covers, especially after watching some of your jaw-dropping recent solos. Your snare/hi hat stuff is getting scary good, too!
great job , you really have evolved and diversified your skill... i would like to see you do a drum cover of Chicago"s "25 or 6 to 4"...
peace and happiness to you and yours, young lady
She's changed her grip to more standard. Well done, so smooth.
I noticed that right away too. Also called the jazz grip, it was the style used by Buddy Rich
Awesome cover of an iconic Steve Gadd drum part. Best wishes on your move to Los Angeles.
Yoyoka❗️
Such a great rendition of a classic drumming favorite. Players 4x your age playing for decades struggle with that song.
I’ve been watching you since you were a tiny young drummer, and what’s this…. Your moving to LA…. Well thats my city. 😉👍🏽
Anything you and your family ever need, please let us know….👍🏽🙏🏽✌🏽❗️♥️❗️
Those rolls on the snare, that's deft touch.
Another interesting cover, Paul Simon always writes interesting songs. Simon's songs are almost jazz in some of them.
I hope she hears/has heard Graceland.
What a complete sonic feast...
Great feel!
I'm glad to hear slower paced pieces performed as they can be more demanding timing wise. I'm a big fan of her Bonzo, Jeff Porcaro and other of her great covers! In my next life I'd like to be a musician of some sort. Aloha from Hawaii.
Traditional grip, very cool!
This song is a standard for drummers. There’s nothing difficult about it but it requires the ability to create a pocket and stay in it without giving into the temptation to overplay it. I’m so proud of you!
No standard for drummers steve gadd played this originaly ,ive not heard any other drummer standard tune play this.
My uncle’s favorite from when I was a kid, Yoyoko 🥰
Steve Gadd is not an easy act to follow let alone reproduce to perfection. Yoyoka already a Legend 😎🤘
ridiculously good!
That was nice. The hand-grip change too. All part of evolution.
First time seeing you play with a traditional grip. and what I like about how you played this. is you have finally realized that most of the great drummers don't hit hard. they play with technique and feel and style. and this drum part is not an easy thing for most drummers to play. but you make it look easy. you were just totally relaxed and feeling it. I really would love to see you try to play some ( Missing Persons ) songs like Rock n Roll Suspension / US Drag ? / Mental Hopscotch
Yes! Some Bozzio!!!
Oh! And maybe some from his gig w/ Zappa?
👍😎👍
Yoyoka used this grip in the jam at the end of Rush Hour recently
seeing your comments made me laugh , it's presumptuous of you
once again she shows her fab skills, and her undoubted ability's.
thanks
I guess this proves Yoyoka can play with dynamics as well.. the transition is pretty epic.
I remember the first time I heard this. It was the late 70s and I was a child in the front seat of my mom’s car. She and I were headed home to Charlton, MA from the store in Southbridge, MA passing the Dairy Queen (which looked nothing like anything we’d recognize now) and I told her I really liked it. I can’t remember not loving music, but this song stood out to me even then. It was very much the melody and the lyrics, but the drums always captured me. Fantastic job, Yoyoka. I wish after all these years I was half the drummer you are.
Great cover of the great Steve Gadd. Well done Yoyoka!
Solid performance, great song choice. It’s been a really long time since I heard this song. Honestly this is the best and most I’ve ever enjoyed and appreciated it. Yoyoka you make that happen on many of your videos, I prefer your cover version. Dig the traditional grip.
Next-“Aja”🤔😉
Oh, it’s definitely coming…I can feel it.
I saw this one coming as soon as she started posting all these tunes with the slick ghost notes and subtle snare shtick. I seriously doubt that this is anyone in her inner circle's plan, managers, parents, or even her own, and no one can say she isn't already a phenom, but 5 or so years gigging as a studio musician and working WITH all of these artists she's been covering since she was 7(?!?), would put the polish on this rising star. Sounds like a side-trip, but I think Yoyoko'd dig it.
Love your work little sister!!! Great choice of song again. Thanks for sharing! ❤❤❤
🎼🎶🎵🥁🎵🎵🎶🥁🥁🥁🎶🎵🎶🎵🥁🎵🎶❤🎶🎵🎵🥁🥁🎵🎵🥁🎵🎶🎶🎵🥁🥁🥁❤❤❤❤
Such a strong and interesting drum part. Thank you, Yoyoka! Excellent as always.
Look how fast Yoyoka is mastering the traditional grip! And great groove as always.
I'm glad you noted this because I thought her left hand seemed different than in other videos. I'm no musician and wonder why she is changing up the grip.
@@MB-te1yj she’s been studying jazz drumming, so she’s incorporating this grip when it’s musically appropriate-I think she may stick to matches grip when she rocks out!
Hi Yoyoku this was great and i would like to request one of steve gadds ridiculously challenging performances on another paul simon jewel known as "late in the evening" and found in tne movie one trick pony. Thank you
Great pocket playing!!! This song has such a fun groove. I grew up to my Mom singing this chorus to me all the time. Love it.
Flirtin with Disaster- Molly Hatchet would be an impressive cover.
I suspect the last cover we will see from this wonderful little studio space! Super smooth YOYOKA delivery and impeccable Aki sound. And a bonus for me to see Helbotica peeking out!
What do you mean _"... the last cover we will see from this wonderful little studio space!"?_ 😨
What's happening?
@@gbulmershe is moving to LA.
@@rubentullenaar2934 Thank you for replying. Yoyoka has made some wonderful covers in that studio. She probably needs an "Oakland studio" playlist to commemorate that space and that period.
Best Wishes. ☮
"Helbotica"... please explain?
@@fretlessman71 The shirt YOYOKA is wearing was designed by my son. I gave YOYOKA and Shido some of them when I met her in Las Vegas.
She makes it looks so effortlessly. But I guess it is when ur that good.
You make me Happy Happy Happyyyyyyyyy 😍
Beautiful song and beautiful playing Yoyoka! I hope you are enjoying the summer and finding time to go for bike rides! We try to almost every day
Hey, if it's true that "God is in the details", then Yoyoka is a very real goddess. Amazingly detailed and precise - perfect 🙂 Again, your already incredible skills were even more precisely honed by your recent schooling; very proud of you!
Oh How I envy that girl! Think...to be able to feel the music and at the same time contribute to make it better :)
Yoyoka, you finally performed this song! Thank you so much! I requested it once before in the comments. I felt the same vibe coming from your recent improvisation videos, so I thought it was about time you covered it. I still prefer and love your groovy, powerful Bonzo style playing, but you're perfectly capable of playing with finesse as well. You are a genius!
I know that the second kick should come out of that lick.
Oh, how I love this song! It's pleasure to hear you, Yoyoka! Thank you! Maybe, next time Dimonds on the soles of her shoes?;)
Yoyoka, love the variety of your covers! Grip change noticed too!! Loved this, good luck on your move to LA.😊
Wow Yoyoka! I haven't had the time to catch your videos for the last 9 months or so, and I couldn't have imagined you getting better than you already were, but I notice a change in you now. Your fluidity is impeccable, and you r every stroke appears so effortless, like anybody could do it. You are truly a master of your craft. And even though I don't know you, watching your videos for so many years now, I can't help but be proud of you. And please, only keep drumming only for _YOUR OWN_ joy. We all want you to be happy no matter what you do.
I have a mental list of songs encompassing different styles that I wish Yoyoka would cover, this was on that list. Better than I even imagined!
I would love to see her version of a drum solo of Chicago I'm a man and also drum solo In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida she would really tear these up! I would like to see her doing yessongs as well🙏
@@ritchievernon8099 I'm literally from the same part of Chicago as Danny Seraphine! So under appreciated!! "Feelin' Stronger Every Day" is actually on my Yoyoka list, but I can jive if she chose "I'm A Man"!! 🤘🏼
I was about 18 when this came out. I had sorta forgotten the great drum part, your playing certainly reminded me though.
You know..., I think Yoyo... Ka's the real McCoy!
You make me smile everytime I hear one of your songs. You just have so much positive energy to put in to every song you do. I've been watching you for a long time now and I think I will keep watching you until I'm gone. Wishing you the best of success and may all your dreams come true! ❤❤❤
Steve Gadd and the Live in Central Park concert…now I want to watch it all again.
Yoyoka thank you so much for sharing your fantastic talent. You are my absolute favorite drummer 🐰🥁🐰🥁🐰
If ever anyone deserves recognition, its Yoyoka. Such a clean cover. Well done!
A friend of mine's daughter is learning drums so ive linked them to your channel, of course!

Great song, Great cover!
Watching this so very young one play THIS particular song SO spectacularly like that, lordy, is just... Wow!
Absolutely brilliant! 🎶😎🎶
Love your diversity of talent. Not a Patreon as can't afford it, but two songs by Men at Work's underrated Jerry Speiser have always been great fun to play, as well as a challenge, 'Down by the Sea' and 'People Just Love to Play with Words'. 'Down by the Sea' is simply sublime all around.
Yes to the album cuts, and from a great debut album.
Catch a Star is great, too.
@@eddierayvanlynch6133 Agreed, forgot that one...thanks!
Am I the only one who wants to see a Paul Simon reaction video to this cover
Nope! However most reactors even Wave need a $ reaction. If this was a more complex drum pattern like Seven Day’s I would be inclined.
Count this as something I thought I would never hear......wow......really cool.
Such an iconic song, so well done I doubt there is anything you can’t do! ❤
One of my favorite song lately!
Wonderful! Love the traditional grip and open handed playing.
I like that snare sound and the camera angles. Very nice work yoyoka. 👊🏽
Another seamless cover, simple but very effective, like you alone have the Yoyoka secret.
Always loved the drumming on this song. Happy to see you do it.
Good very very good. Marvellous. Peace and Love to all. God bless you all.
So glad to see you tuning into Paul Simon, an elite level at all does. A national treasure to be sure. Mr. Garfunkel you aren’t forgotten.

And so fun.
I can tell you loved the choruses.
