  • The Soviet-Russian nuclear icebreaker 'Yamal’ was launched in 1989 and commissioned three years later. Now ‘Yamal’ is the seventh ship to reach the North Pole of the planet. During its entire operation this nuclear-powered icebreaker made more than 46 voyages. Not all of them were easy. In 1996 ‘Yamal’ survived a fire, and in 2009 it collided with an empty tanker that was running on ballast. After the emergency the icebreaker had to accompany the second vessel to a safe port. In the same 2009 ‘Yamal’ participated in the rescue of a group of archaeologists from Ledyanaya Gavan Bay in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago. The list of adventures and ‘misadventures’ of the Russian nuclear icebreaker could be continued for a long time, but ‘Yamal’ is interesting not only for this.
