“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”
I think the German people still remember the holocaust without statues of Hitler. Education is more important than a statue. Move them all to civil war museums and battlefields, they shouldn’t be on the middle of cities or names of schools. In my opinion.
@@mrasmussen90 why do we have statues of the baphomet? The Confederate statues are all reminders of who fought to end slavery. You might remember the holocaust but you should see how many dont, they dont teach about it in the west hardly at all. If those historical statues come down EVERY statue will come down, remember we are supposed to have a equal society.
Maryann Deweerd to me there’s just no place for them in public spaces. I can make 100 analogies about how it would be similar to have statues of British Kings up in the US, that’s part of our history right? But either way the confederate soldiers were bad people who fought for horrible things. It’s time to take them down.
@@mrasmussen90 the generals who are the statues weren't bad people most of them were actually union generals before the war they fought for what they believed in slavery is bad and horrible but it is part of our history we shouldn't pick and choose which parts
@@SentientSingularity how are the statues honoring them they sure aren't anymore and most of those generals weren't bad people. Lee “thought it was a bad idea for Virginia to secede, and God knows he was right, but secession had been more or less democratically decided upon.”

1Drummer Most Germans in the Wehrmacht weren’t Nazis, crack a book

Most Confederates never owned slaves nor did they support it, they were fighting for pride.
Get real.
Billy Hollinghurst Get real--fighting is not usually a positive value. I realize that you have fun by going out to play war reenactment games, but perhaps the confederate soldiers should have refused to fight simply because it was offered to them. They had nothing to gain, lost everything, and incurred devastation on their entire world. Just about the worst thing ever. They were romantic and emotionally driven to fight, but they lost. Monuments just look stupid.
How was slavery legal in the first place? Because slavery existed for thousands of years and was common place in every society. Even Africa. yes some of the people that where brought over to America to be slaves were already slaves to begin with. And don't forget, people in the North also owned slaves long before the Civil War. George Washington had slaves, Thomas Jefferson claimed all Men are created equal. He was not talking about black slaves when he said that. You do know that he also owned slaves, don't you., Stop thinking that only the leaders and Generals from the South on the Confederate side were terrible slave owners. Many never owned slaves.
We need to remember the past, So we don't make the same mistakes. We can not simply whip it out just because you don't agree with it.
This didn't age well. They said no way they would ever want to remove a statue of Washington or Jefferson. Well now it's 2020 and they're trying to remove those too.

I was surprised to learn that the monument debate wasn't isolated to the US. The exact same thing is going on in the UK and other countries with their own historical figures. It's like the same playbook is being used over and over regardless of the local specifics. Only the name of the local object of outrage changes from place to place. I find this very unusual. It makes me wonder if the instigators are truly upset about historical monuments or if they are just feigning outrage over whatever is locally available to complain about according to their script.
I think it is dumb.
History has been rewritten by the victor to cover up how this horrible war really started.
If tearing down statues of Hitler was okay than this is too

Robert Edward Lee (January 19, 1807 - October 12, 1870) was an American Confederate general best known as a commander of the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He commanded the Army of Northern Virginia from 1862 until its surrender in 1865 and earned a reputation as a skilled tactician.
Also, he fought to free the slaves on his family’s estate, and merely fought for his state, not for slavery.
@@metal_fusion He fought for his state, just because he didn’t like the federal government. He was originally in the US Army, but formally resigned and sent Lincoln an letter about it. And again, when he inherited his family’s plantation, he freed all slaves on it.

I am sure I could find something wrong with Lincoln, MLk and Genghis Kahn whoever else you want to name, a lot can be learned from history, I have traveled around saw these memorials learned a lot about the old days, when these people were alive good and bad. I don't understand the idea of not teaching history to the children. The future leaders of the world have history to help guide their decisions. most of the issues that we deal with today are not newly invented, I guarantee people leading these campaigns are looking at history to make their decisions.
Agreed. Every man has something bad they've done. Instead of focusing on the bad. Let's focus on the good these men have done and use the good as an example for us. Robert E Lees story is actually really inspiring. It's a true American tale. A man who felt like he had to fight for his beliefs. The wrong side i think. But still honorable none the less. People respect Rommel a German tank commander. I dont agree with the Confederate side but i can respect a man fighting for his cause. The Rebel Flag and all of these Confederate monuments have nothing to do with American history if you look back into history. One will see that America broke apart, and that flag represented a whole different country technically. Since the south broke apart from the north. Also, the problem with this confederate stuff is the history and racism that will haunt the Confederate legacy forever. that is why they watch what you do, because it will eventually come back to haunt you in the past, and this confederate stuff is a prime example.
Number one rebel flag had nothing to do with the Confederacy in the first place. The rebel flag was West Virginia regiment Battle Flag it was never flown as a flag for the Confederacy. Civil War and the Confederacy has a lot to do with American history just as the Revolutionary War had a lot to do with American history. As far as the South being racist and owning slaves the North had slaves and we're just as racist. George Washington had slaves Benjamin Franklin had slaves General Grant head of the Union Army took his slaves in the battle. Two northern states would never even recognize the Emancipation Proclamation. There were northern states that only freed slaves after they turn the age of 18. These monuments such as Stonewall Jackson should stay up Stonewall Jackson was a hero to a lot of slaves. Stonewall Jackson educated African-Americans at the time that it was actually illegal in Lexington and in Virginia to even educate a Slave. He started the Lexington Presbyterian Sunday School where he taught in African Americans who were slaves how to read and write after he join the Confederacy and went to war he would send money home so that those African Americans could afford to buy Bibles and hymnals. In my opinion Thomas Stonewall Jackson was a big part not only the Confederacy but American history and African American history. there was nothing racist about that man. People need to learn their history studying and read get educated before that make comments.
@Will J God Bless you. We need more education. People like you Will J give me hope in this country.
Why can't you have nostalgia or honor people of the past. Tbh, I would rather look to people in the past as heroes or models (good and the bad) rather than Captain America, Iron Man, Batman, etc.

5:10 What Mr. President is saying is where do you draw the line. One you take down monuments of people who fought to preserve southern heritage, could one argue that they should take down Jefferson's because he owned slaves? What some uneducated people fail understand that parts in American history is very violent and sometimes racist, which is why we need to keep these statues so they don't repeat themselves. If you don't like the monuments, just don't look at them, and at the very worse they should be put in museum for those who want to see men who didn't want to be pushed around buy the North.
Not a single one of my ancestors was a Confederate nor a slave owner. Most of those monuments were erected by widows and orphans and public donations, while the grandest of the statues nearly all commissioned through public subscription, and they once played the biggest part of the healing of a very divided nation. The South was and still is the most patriotic region of Americans, based on military enlistments from all the world wars. Polls show the majority of Americans don't favor removing any of these statues, though many should be reconsidered for moving to a museum, battlefield park or cemetery. But it's absurd for the former Confederate capitols like Richmond and Montgomery to remove theirs and try to kill their tourist industry.
Patrick Marquis Regardless of how confederate statues and monuments were erected it should never have been done and certainly they should not have been allowed to stand for so many years. Take the confederate statues and monuments down and place them in museums where they belong.

I'm Turkish and I have great interest in history. I'm really having difficulty understanding Americans tearing down statues of historical figures. I thought Robert E. Lee was personally against fighting but went back to Virginia because Lincoln was raising an army to invade his own country. He was a wise man and a great general. He wasn't a slavery supporter. I also personally believe that slavery would die out itself when the south would have equal industry compared to north. You simply can't ask a country to stop it's industry all at once. Maybe the North should have invested more in South before becoming hypocrites half way through the war. If it was really about slavery, why didn't Lincoln issue Emancipation Proclamation before he raised an army with defined purpose of "Rooting out rebellion"? And don't even present Fort Sumpter as an example because Lincoln was clearly fortifying it to antagonize the southerners.
Treason against the British empire and the crown that oppressed the USA colonists until the Aryans rebelled and drove them out of the colonies.
Yet the Confederacy invaded fort Sumter 😂😂 no one was twisting their arm
Walk in a black mans shoes for a week in the USA and I think your views will change. When looking at history look at the person my friend. Ask yourself ......why are there NO statues of Hitler in Germany???
Markhas , You need a new history book. Robert E. Lee fought a war to enslave other human beings, he picked a fight with a more populous and better-armed north leading to hundreds of thousands dying which was a significant % of the population, he was brutal to his slaves which he had tortured, he enslaved free black people in the Northern cities that he raided, he massacred black soldiers trying to surrender, he refused a prisoner exchange with General Grant who wanted black soldiers included because any that lived were now property.
No body can rewrite history and the true story about them aren’t told completely.Let them have a placard on those statues that tells their whole history, not their stories. We need them in museums not in public places.

Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines who fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, which was approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Before that, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. Just for the record, the last Confederate veteran died in 1958. America is a BIG country. Not all cities in all states have Confederate symbols. Keep in mind those statues also represent America's LONG history, and social and cultural progress.
As a former Virginia resident, I'm looking forward to see how far both the Virginia's Tourist
Industry and Virginia's Quality of Living tank when they start tearing down
monuments. Since the Virginia Tourist Industry has little to offer outside the state's
history, Virginia's downward spiral into poverty/ high taxes due to the loss of
tourist dollars should be quick and painless- if not an enjoyable one to watch.
As a current North Carolina resident, the thought of North Carolina's tourist
industry picking up on behalf of Virginia's Governor Ralph Northam pleases me
especially if the average North Carolina tax payer receives a tax break on
behalf of Virginia and the state's tax payers. This situation will be a win-win
for everyone involved. North Carolina experiences an increased cash flow from
its booming tourist industry while Virginia gets to wonder what went wrong. On
that final note, if Democrats really want to tear down monuments to "White
Supremacy" let's start where white supremacy began "The Cash Cow that
forms the Historic Triangle of Colonial Williamsburg/ Jamestown/ and
Yorktown." Let's really show who is boss by tearing down every historical
monument residing in Virginia (Including Colonial Williamsburg, the Natural
Bridge, Monticello, and University of Virginia) thus bankrupting the state in a
fashion that it deserves. North Carolina Tourist Industry and Tax Payers are
counting on it.

Sounds like what the south was trying to tell Lincoln doesn't it? All of a sudden when a liberal wants his agenda pushed he becomes a advocate of states rights, amazing.
Its ironic
There is a solution for the Confederate soldier monuments and statues, take them out of the public squares and put them on Civil War battlefields to teach history with. Re-purpose them to teach the history of the defeat of Confederacy on the battlefields. Lots of Civil War parks have very few markers, use them to mark surrender sites, retreat routes, headquarters, etc. The Civilian monuments are not as easy to find homes for. Some might go in museums. Don't destroy them, re-purpose them to teach the history of the defeat on the battlefield.
i thanos irwin will eliminate the middle class
Nobody is erasing history

Please Mr. Ricard re-read my comments. I said the Dems WERE against it until they changed it to correspond to the Communist Manifesto, "THEN THEY SUPPORTED IT." You Dems are amazing! You have it in black & white right in front of you, and still your comprehension is mind boggling.
there was no such thing as a dixiecrat in the late 1800's. thats a made up term from the 1950s. you need to read a few more books kid.
Neither party has clean hands, they have gone wherever their donors want them to.
America has always had the best Government Money can Buy.
Anyone who believes in his heart that the community should "take" the use of someone's private property away from him, and give it to someone else IS a communist. It's a foundational principle of communism. It's called "stealing." There's nothing worse than communism, not rape, not murder, not slavery, not cannibalism,--nothing! That's why wars are fought over it.
Anthony Smith :
I think the word you are missing is "sharing", like "compromise", a word seriously misunderstood in America.
The United States has minted commemorative coins since 1892. Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee, and other confederates have been honored by the United States Government through the issue of these beautiful coins. I have the Stone Mountain half dollar and I'm very proud of it. My Grandfather left it to me in his will. He had lots of old confederate paper money. Some quite valuable. I'm proud of my family, I'm proud of my ancestors, and I'm proud to be a working tax paying citizen of the United States.
I just heard BAHHHHHH-BAHHHHH
“[T]he Party member, like the proletarian, tolerates present-day conditions because he has no standards of comparison. He must be cut off from the past, just as he must be cut off from foreign countries, because it is necessary for him to believe that he is better off than his ancestors and that the average level of material comfort is constantly rising.”
Mayor Stone is comparing the politics/morality of the “founding fathers” and “Virginian confederates” on basis of whether or not they fought the United States (treason). The politics/morality fueling the global monument removal movement, from a Black perspective, has nothing to do with treason and everything to do with the politics/morality of slavery, colonialism. In the context of the politics/morality of slavery and colonialism, the Virginia secessionist of 1776 were exactly the same as the Virginia secessionist of 1861. In fact, the latter is a direct political lineage of the former.
No one is erasing your history. That's why let's put these people into history books, and these monuments into museums.
I was long undecided whether Confederate monuments in the South should be preserved or not. I mean, any decent person would agree that the Confederates were scum... but still, monuments are history, and I don't support the destruction of art or statues no matter how much of a scumbag the subject of the piece was.
We know Nero was a tyrant, we known Henry VIII was voted as the worst monarch in British history for a good reason, we know Genghis Khan was infamous for a reign of terror... but despite all of those personas being absolute degenerates, I doubt anyone would suggest demolishing their monuments, right? I mean, the presence of their monuments does not in any way represent that anyone would like to resurrect them into power today.
However, here is why I've come to the conclusion that Confederate monuments should be demolished. Not only that, but I think the Confederate flag (or flags) should be banned from official use... just like the Nazi flag is not waved around Germany.
See, while the historical figures I've mentioned are well in the past and have no modern ideological claim... the Confederate ideology is still out there. I mean, it started not long after the end of the Civil War, and lasts to this day, the neo-Confederate ideology and the "Lost Cause" nonsense.
I've done my research in various political Facebook groups, and I was horrified to see how much there is an attempt to justify what the Confederacy did. Neo-Confederates attempt to push the "Lost Cause" narrative, claiming the Civil War was not about slavery but about "state rights"... they just omit the part how the "right" they were talking about was mainly the "right" to hold other beings as slaves.
All of the slave women raped, all of the men whipped, all of the abuse, the chains, the humiliation... nope, neo-Confederates conveniently cut it out.
And that ideology never stopped! The lynching continued well into the 20th century. In the 1920, the KKK peaked 6,000,000 members, that was Confederate ideology right there. The horrific segregation laws continued into the 1960s, and same was with the anti-miscegenation laws that literally had humans sent to prison for having interracial relationships.
But that didn't stop in the 1960s! In 2017, a violent rally took part in Charlottsville, Virginia, called "United the Right Rally" against the removal of Confederate monument. In the rally, Confederate and Nazi flags were waved.
The reason I support the removal of Confederate monuments is because that ideology, the horrific and vile ideology of slavery and the subjugating of other human beings, is still there! The dehumanisation of black people is still there. Those monuments are part of that ideology and are used to preserve it.
And you know what? I honestly understand where neo-Confederates are coming from... it's not easy to admit your ancestors were lowlife scum who fought to preserve slavery, so you create a new narrative. Will the descendants of Nazi soldiers try the same in the future? Who knows.
And yes, I know not all Confederate soldiers were for slavery, some were drafted against their will... and? So were many soldiers serving in the German Army in WWII. Your point is...? The ones with a moral compass deserted, and the ones with a moral compass and courage did what the great Newton Knight and the Free State of Jones did, and resisted the Confederate regime.
Those monuments need to be demolished, pretty much as we don't have Nazi monuments around today.
No black child should have to walk past a monument which was the gathering point of those who violently lynched his great uncle, and which still serves as a gathering point for those who lament the loss of the Confederacy and lament the abolition of slavery.
You guys don’t even know history, otherwise there wouldnt be schools names after robert e lee where young black children go
The people of the South have the right to honor their dead, its crazy that a few people can destroy the souths history
Ok but George Washington had slaves.
Ikr. they wont tell you that in school
@@carter3096 my school did. I even had to write an essay about it. Unfourtantly people get caught up in "southern pride" or "slavery is wrong" to justify a postion. Both of which are weak arguments. What's does a dead guy have to do with a statue being taken down? Because slavery is bad Confederate stautes are bad. Therefore all statues are bad because they represent slavery. Also being prideful of something doesn't make ones postion justified. Anyways I know you werent commenting on that. Just thought it should be something that should said coming from a guy who lives in Texas.
What about Thomas Jefferson?
@@AxenfonKlatismrek yes Thomas Jefferson had slaves when he made the comment all men were created equal he wasn't talking about a slaves but yet they make a comment video while Thomas Jefferson was great because he said all men are created equal.
He made the nation, the cofederates divided the nation.
Try as they may to mute history they can never change it! Ha,ha,ha!! 🤣🤣🤣
The history is that the confederacy lost/failed. Why would we want to change that?
Don't touch the statue! Dictator!
So also the statue of Stalin should be kept?
Just watched Patriots Day. What if the family of the bombers wanted to put money into statues for them? Would that be the same thing?
Keep the flags keep the statues. THE CONFERECY WILL SURVIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
What the hell is the Conferecy?
@@BPD1586 He means Conferaunendencyrerrcy
Yes but you have to ask yourself if you are a southerner how would the Southerners and Atlanta feel if there is a monument of general Sherman in downtown Atlanta or one in downtown Vicksburg of General Grant there is one of General Grant in Vicksburg but it’s in a government museum
🛵 See your point, but Sherman wasn't from Georgia. At least these statues are of native sons of their state.
The United States enforced slavery for 85 years under the US flag, while the Confederacy and slavery under the Confederate flag only lasted... 5 years.
If any flag represents slavery more, it's the United States flag, and United States monuments to the founding fathers who were slave owners, and could of freed their slaves at any time if they actually believed the rhethoric they spouted. The United States is hated, and it's time it came down from our government building, and the whole US regime thrown on the trash heap of history, just like Stalinist Russia, Nazi Germany, and the Khmer Rouge rule.
Every time I have to look at a United States flag flying, with it's stars corralled into a corner by prison bars, and see that evil panopticon police state eye atop the pyramid of slavery on the dollar bill, I am completely offended and appalled that I live in a country that tolerates these blatant symbols that are overt affronts upon freedom and liberty......
You don't know much about history, because the Native American tribes had a huge civilization here in North America. They built some pretty large cities all across America. Just off the top of my head... Etowah Mounds, Mesa Verde / Puye Cliff Dwellings, Cahokia Mounds, Taos Pueblo.
You can't just take someone's land or territory if it doesn't belong to you... that's fundamental to all law. You don't have a country, you only have a back yard and a front yard... that doesn't mean I can come and take them both.
I am not arguing the right or wrong of the matter, just the fact.
If you jump around a camp fire wearing a loin cloth and your biggest technological advancement is propelling a sharp stick with a bit of twine.... Then a guy with a repeating rifle that can reach out and talk to you at a 150 yards ➕, and he knows how to use it to boot..... If it wasn't done by the big bad boogie, I mean white man then it probably would have been the Spaniards, or somebody else. The outcome of that is history, PERIOD. Same with slavery, it happened. Good, bad, doesn't matter! It happened and can't be changed till the Indians invent a time machine.
So get over it!
All we can do is remember the past, learn from it, and do not repeat it. Which is a compelling reason to keep these monuments out so the next generation will see them and ask their parents what they mean.
I am even less apologetic about this statement.
IF YOU HATE THIS COUNTRY than either take it over or MOVE THE F**K OUT!!!
Tell you what I think that we should meet half way. If the statue depicts a general who was a known cruel racist, take it down. If its a statue depicting a general who was just fighting for his country keep it up. If it is just a memorial for confederate soldiers keep it up.
@Micheal Carney I think thats making a really big generalization. I think most of the lads in the south were just fighting because they were born there.
Who’s from tiktok
Let those who appreciate them support the removal to their chosen place.
If we’re removing statues then we should also remove black history books from all shelves. If you erase one history why stop there? Just saying.
A monument to someone who happened to be a confederate soldier/slave owner- Not Remotely racist.
A monument to someone BECAUSE they were a slave owner- ABSOLUTELY RASCIST.
Make the distinction between the two
What does confederate stand for?
DANG, everyone group build your own damn museum and put all the statues, monuments, sacred trees, special sandwich that somebody sneezed on 3000 years ago along with any other precious things to your race, or social group in the museum that you build with your own money... not tax payer money.. Because your personal precious things are not precious to all tax payers... and that will at least get this massive ball of bullsh*t rolling in the right direction. While your at it, every race and social group build your own schools, boys & girl scouts, clubs, bakeries, and all other establishments.. That way you can run them with your own core beliefs, life style, culture or what every the currant politically correct buz word is now. instead of trying to force your way into establishments that another groups has poured the hard work, time, and money into. And then saying now you have to do it my way. It is not okay for no group weather it be race or social standing to strong hold, enslave, put down another group.Right is right no matter who does it... and wrong I wrong no matter who does it...
consumers hold the power... stop patranizing people/companies that are part of the issue. When they loose money they listen... all the marchs and protest is not doing anything... BUT!!!! If you take thier profits away... Only then will you see things moving in the right direction. After it hits their bottom line.Equality is every person having the same human rights. As a country we are only as strong as our weakest linkSo the smart thing to do if reinforce the weakest link. education and jobs are a major key. if the book and equipment are out of date in the lower income area. then that is a fixable problem that the people who have grossly to much can help fix. if you live in a lower income area, and you feel like protesting and marching for a cause that can truly empact your future. Ask your city leaders for police substation to be put in or near your elemetary and high schools.. to prevent drug trafficers from setting up shop..to prevent them from going off track at a young age.. push for after school care to run until 8pm... so single parent can pick thier kids up directly from the school... rather than latch key kids roaming the streets to get caught up with the wrong crowd. and once that bad seed is planted in them it is very hard to pluck it out...protest to have another class addded to the correculam that is focused on the steps of getting employment and money management... The younger you start children with positive basics blocks of success. The better BECAUSE those good characters will grow up with them.America is a multi cultural country and that is not going to change anytime soon. So we are going to have to learn to live and let live. If every group build thier on things with thier own money that they raise" not tax payers money". Then they can decide what thier children will be exposed to in those establishments. But make sure you teach them the real world outside of the box is multi cultured so you must teach them to respect other persons choice for thier own lives.. as long as the other persons way of life is not to force the rest of the world to trade thier own core beliefs for thiers... lol... a bit of common since is required..lolAnyway, if you are actively working towards peace for all and teaching your children to do the same, then great.. BUT!!!. If you are just sitting around blamming every negantive thing in Americas history on the races opposite of your own. YOU ARE A PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!!.people like martin luther king fought for equality... but it seems like people are trying to resegragate themselves completely... And then will begin to complain that the private establishment they asked for is not funded by the tax payer... you can have your cake and eat it to.. so long as you buy the ingrediants, bake the cake yourself.. and buy all means have a sit and make a pig of yourself... but this winning and finger pointing while asking for feel stuff has to stop... get it together people....America has a beautiful multi culture... imagine how boring it would be if you looked around and everything look the same... NUTHIN BUT LOVE TO ALL...
Should ban the Confederate and Gadsen flags as well.....burn the Mississippi state flag or throw them in a sewage plant....If we allow statues of these pariahs it would be like Hitler statues in Germany, Tojo statues in Japan and Marshal Henri Petain in France.
I`m English obviously by the vitar.....but a few thoughts for you Americans......World War 2 = Yes the Enemies of the Allied forces in World War 2 did bad things, but so did the allied forces too, but Does it mean that all the German, Japanese and Italian monuments (to remember their dead) need to be taken down too???Remember..... America is not just America because of the Union soldiers.........many soldiers on both sides gave their lives because they stood up for what they believed in....whether it was about slavery or anything other motives, the fact remains........You are You because of History - Every little event has brought you to where you are now.........I`m sure you have ancestry from Both Union and Confederate parties.............. Think about it America!!! Stop this Stupidity - you are making fools of yourselves!!!!
You don’t see any comparison of Washington and Jefferson to Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee? Funny, cause I do. Jefferson and Washington were both slave owners in a time slavery was viewed as okay, which is why they didn’t take up arms over it. Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson weren’t much different except they fought to preserve the culture of slavery in the south. There’s a lot of resemblance if u actually look into it
