@@oc1137 well classically its played on a clarinet, with the goal of it resembling a bumblebee. At the time of the composition the theremin and digital processing (she is using a tremolo pedal or plugin) were nonexistent and the clarinet is the closest instrument beeign capable of producing a high tempo and a fitting sound. There are some really good clarinet performances where the performer manages to capture the right "feel".

@@oc1137 it's an interlude from a Russian fairytale/fantasy opera called "tale about Tzar Saltan" where the main hero, prince Gvidon is magically turned into a bumblebee by powers of Swan Princess (she's capable of magic and turns on her own) for spying on his enemies and his father Saltan they fooled. It's meant to sound like a bee, and everyone on stage seems to be afraid of something small and invisible flying around the stage and trying to catch it. I know nothing about the theremin, I've just watched many thereminists play. I'm curious how you made this tremolo sound. Did you edited it after on computer? Or did you made your instrument "autotune" at 100% so you didn't need to do finger positions and just move your left hand closer or away from the antenna? I've tried a theremini once, and it had this "autotune" feature so with a little bit of concentration I could play a simple tune after an hour. But it sounded very unnatural and crappy with autotune. So how did u play this? ^_^

@@cecilyerker I would have thought she was using a Moog Theremini, but her website confirms the Hummingbird Tremolo by Earthquaker.
She has a 2016 Facebook video ("Theremin & Hummingbird") where she briefly demonstrates it and implied she was working on 'Flight of the Bumblebee', as she made such a video in 2017 (with a fairly loud piano accompanist) -- /watch?v=q6tAwDXPUxo
Her brief 2020 Facebook video ("Using pedals with your theremin brings about a whole new world of possibilities to you") says she has a video for Patreon sponsors that goes into more detail about how she uses pedals for her 'Flight of the Bumblebee' performance.
      Carolina's video -- Arpanoid by EarthQuaker Devices: Theremin Session #3 -- explores a different pedal -- /watch?v=2Gja9wBkz6U
Thorwald Jørgensen also did a version (using a Boss TR-2 tremolo pedal) in 2019 -- /watch?v=4y_MtDHroQQ
Miss Hypnotique (from Eccentronic) would do a highly edited version in 2012 -- /watch?v=EaXzcUBy79k
I'd love to see someone replicate Clara Rockmore's 1976 performance of Ravel's 'Habanera' -- /watch?v=uuKBPEDU-W0
Given the structure of the melody, a pedal wouldn't help. Or her performance of Saint-Saëns' 'The Swan' (Good luck with that!)
Still, for anyone intimidated by a theremin (or this online version) -- femurdesign.com/theremin/
The Moog Theremini is much more approachable for beginners (with it's 'Pitch Correction' capability) -- /watch?v=8bakI0ITCqQ&t=6m30s

This is utterly ridiculous! Such a complex song made to sound so beautiful. I feel like the theremin is the perfect instrument to play this on. Wonderful job and wonderfully played! ^_^

I’ve watched so much twoset that I am automatically triggered just by reading the title. But a lovely rendition regardless!

Very nice! Are you using a Max/MSP patch to do the tremolo effect triggered by the computer vision? Would love to see you expand on this approach even more.

Playing this on the piano alone is super Tough. Imagine playing this on a Theremin. Gosh you are so talented Carolina!

I thought it was just going to be portamento and I was like "that's cheating" but however you made it do the individual notes makes it not cheating

OMG How insane is this! I have listened about this instrument and it was actually interesting, but you got theremin direct to the next level, you make it feel as a really expressive instrument. That's pretty cool.

Is this fake? Or how come the notes around 0:37 are so high even with that much distance, and around 0:47 they are lower even though your right hand is closer to the rod than before? But if theres an explanation, please excuse my accusation

Cute....but this is more than just the theremin creating the rhythmic pulsations in the "tune"...clearly the pitch 'string' is theremin created, but the rhythmic overlay that creates the continuous string of rhythmic pulses is created in a daw. Still pretty cool!!

No sheet music, no visual cues for where to put your hands (i.e., pianos have discrete keys, violins and guitars at least have separate strings) - just a bunch of open air and the power of your brain. That's the most amazing part about all of this, for me.
