I was doing deadlifts, injured my back. It’s been 3 months. Still discomfort, but better than before. But when I lay on my back it’s like my spine moves or the muscles gets really tight. Also when I am on my side

I had a herniated disc in my 40s. During PT I was told to do that exact exercise he was doing at the beginning of the video.. BIG MISTAKE! After a few repetitions, I suddenly had excruciating pain and sciatica for the first time in my life. I believe that particular exercise pinched my bulging disc or even made it worse. It's 10 years later and I ve been in constant pain since and injections and meds don't work at all. I have been advised by several surgeons not to get surgery unless I can't walk or get major nerve symptoms because they say back surgery isn't that successful and only makes the arthritis spread up your back faster. So I sit here literally bone on bone in pain for over a decade
Get well soon Bob, been noticing the slightly slurred speech in the past week and cannot believe you got ataxia. Gotta say even as a physio myself, I keep on learning something new everyday from your videos, all the best!
Pilates and gyrokinesis are my two saving graces since my herniated disc diagnosis 4 years ago - stretching and decompressing my back and learning how to properly use my glutes, hamstrings, and ALL of my abdominal muscles really well. I’m shocked how long I was doing weight lifting and other exercises (with personal trainers even!) without ever really being told how to use those muscles and when/how they should be working.

I love you guys and follow your videos daily. I'm getting back into shape after a trip and fall accident in December 2021, where I fractured my right hand (boxer break) a torn medial meniscus (never repaired) and a herniated disk between C5 and C6. I did have the herniated disk fixed by an ACDF surgery by BioSpine Institute in Tampa on 11/30/22 and it was the best move I could do. I no longer have any pain and am doing P/T to get my range of motion to my neck and shoulders. Thanks to the surgery and your non-stop, helpful videos, I'm in the best shape that I've been in years. Thank you!

I wish I could show you guys my MRI and get some tips on stretches. I have 6 bulging discs, 2 pinched nerves, degenerative disc disease, facet disease, osteoarthritis, scoliosis, and spondylitis. The pain goes around my left hip and down the front of the leg. It feels like someone is just cutting into me and the pain is so deep. It has me in tears and so far, nothing has helped that my Dr’s have done.. it’s frustrating to say the least
@guitarsarelikestupid7200 I can relate totally. I've wished for it at times.. its very depressing to not be able to do what i should be able to. Pain 24/7 is over the top. And since soo many messed up by abusing pain killers, the people who really need help with pain are looked at like a drug seeker/addict. There is a difference between being a drug addict and being physically dependent on pain meds in order to barely exist and do the bare minimum every day. Its a dismal way to exist.
I had a herniated disc that caused sciatic nerves last year and I was told to do surgery but I .Gradually, the pain and the sciatic healed off slowly.I went for another scan just a few days ago and I was told that there's nothing like herniated disc but the the muscle surrounding the disc has a problem so I should go see a physiotherapist ,I'll be told which exercises I should do.Though I haven't seen the physiotherapist yet but almost all the pains are gone naturally.
Thanks for your great videos!!!! I can be dense sometimes, so maybe I missed it, but I don't think that it can be stressed enough that anyone who has sciatica or back pain should look for a PT therapist who specializes in spines. The basic McKenzie method shown in the first part of your video absolutely worked to get relief and help to cure my severe right leg pain. In my first PT session (and all follow-ups for that matter) the therapist had me do a variety of movements and then had me try different stretches and exercises. Some that were tried reduced my pain and some increased it. The ones that reduced pain were added to my routines. Thanks to the targeted PT spine approach I am now off all pain and NSAID meds, back to normal activities, and completely pain free. The other day I walked my dog for about 2.5 miles. I'm almost back to normal length dog walks. Trying some UA-cam back pain and sciatica relief techniques may help, but my advice would be to get to at least a few PT sessions using a spine specialist. Thoughts and prayers for Bob. I really miss his contributions and humor in the videos.
As I was watching you sit stretch with the mop I got to thinking an adjustable shower curtain rod would be better since it can accommodate any persons body height. Plus they have rubber end caps to keep it from slipping on the floor and the metal ones are sturdy. Additionally they are relatively inexpensive. Always enjoy ❤ your vids. 👍
My lower back spine had a huge, let's say "cavity". I could feel my spine wasn't aligned right. Something probably happened years ago when I helped with moving heavy things up and down the stairs and my disc slipped. Over the years I had this radiating pain, especially when I woke up in the morning. Stubborn me didn't seek help. It is only a few years ago that I did some rotation exercises of the spine. Gently. It was a UA-cam video showing how one might "pop" the lower back. My spine didn't pop, but I noticed my spine began to align more and more and the cavity slowly disappearing. Mind you, it did come with some temporary side effects, as I had these sudden pinching nerve pains that caused me to totally fall to the ground. This would always happen suddenly. I would suddenly fall to my knees again and again. But this was temporary, luckily. Pinched nerves, I guess. I also do this thing where I lay on my back on the mattress and my buttocks over the edge of the mattress with my legs as support. With this I could feel the pop of the lower spine, moving into place. It took a few years, but now it seems everything is in place once again, although not perfect, but no more radiating pains.
Every time when I think I'm starting to take a step forward I always take two to three steps backwards I never can get going again in the right direction I'm 62 years old now
@@BobandBrad Dear sir , I have herniated disc & that is causing constipation , bloating & other issues , I have been to chiropractor 7-8 times but not much help also when I lift weight herniated disc comes back , so do you think i should go to surgery now ? please advice .
I wish I could have therapy with you guys. I'm 48 and have been experiencing terrible pain left hip lower back. Had a mri it showed 2 slipped disc l5 and s1. On the right yep right disc left side pain they are sending me to pain clinic. Where I'm sure they will used meds to help me.
Well, I think Everyone’s body is different. You can’t make a claim like this. Impossible. My MRI scan shows a messed up back-they told me I’m in the severe category and would need to surgery. For the past 2 months -I have taken Tylenol, stretched, lied on my side for hours, walked 5000 steps a day -and still, after 2 months, I can barely walk on my feet for very long--but compared to the beginning of all this, I could hardly make it to the bathroom. Now I’m moving more-walking more-standing in one position longer now, not in as much pain, off Tylenol and gabba penton (nerve pills) and only need 1/2 of a muscle relaxer in the morning and the other 1/2 before bedtime. I can sit in chair now and can now extend my bad leg straight (the sciatica side) and it’s a little better. My hamstring and calf are still utterly destroyed and weak. My calf is locked up and tight but I can flex it more now as I walk. I’m not limping anymore. The back of thigh is still store and hurts off and on but is a little better. Still feels awkward when I touch it. My back pain is better now, too. I herniated my L4-5 again. I had back surgery 26 years ago to fix the impingement of the nerve and it worked. I could do everything as normal including carrying 45lbs on my back, hiking 20-30 miles; MT Biking, trail running, etc..,I was active and then 5 months ago, my back started giving me trouble. I was laid up for 4 weeks but rested it. My first MRI showed herniations at L1-down L-4/5, etc….and so I went to work after the acute phase of my pain was better. I worked out hard and was hiking up steep mountain terrain and doing amazingly well with no PT other than what I learned from you guys. All was going well and then I was carrying some heavy equipment and it put me down but far far worse than 5 months ago. This is my first experience with sciatica ontop of my back going out and I must have also torn muscles in my calf and thigh because I couldn’t keep my frame up in a standing position or walk but a few steps. The pain was horrific and lasted weeks. I didn’t any pain mediction-but Tylenol, Gabba and MR and Predisone. No injection -just rest with moving constantly and stretching even through it was painful and arduous, I keep at it everyday. I get up at 5:00 am and begin my rehab all day long and end around 6:00 pm. My entire day is walking, resting, stretching, eating super heathy, drinking lots of water, mediatating, praying, and repeat over and over and over….my new MRI shows my condition had worsened over the last 5 months. I am hearing from many health “experts” that surgery is inevitable to unhinge the nerve that is trapped and giving me foot issues now. It’s numb on my left heel area still but could still be my sciatica calming down now-hopefully, and I will get out of this with no surgery -maybe just an injection?
I was doing deadlifts, injured my back. It’s been 3 months. Still discomfort, but better than before. But when I lay on my back it’s like my spine moves or the muscles get really tight like it’s shifting around.
OMG this is what i needed the arm raise. I've been in 2 weeks of hell since trying some other dumb youtube bench press video to arch your back. (don't do this after 40) I learned the hard way. I went back to doing all my back therapy stuff from a car wreck, but I think its herniated disc. I'm basically been stuck for 7 days on ibuprofen and everything makes it worse except walking, but even then I walked too much. I raised my right arm just curious, felt nothing, raised my left arm, felt a pull across my entire back. Did the left a few more times and instant relief. I'm never putting my left arm down again. lol
What if I have a herniated disc and there is no pain just zero calf strength? I fear surgery is what I will need since EVERY pt and UA-cam channel only addresses pain. Again, I have a pinched s1 nerve root with zero pain just no calf strength at all. Is surgery my only option?
Have you tried the exercises even though you have no pain? If the calf strength is the result of your disc problem, then fixing your disc, regardless of pain, should help. Here are some calf strengthening videos as well you can try: www.youtube.com/@BobandBrad/search?query=calf%20strengthen
Aren't these stretches on the side of the pain exactly the opposite of McKenzie stretches? That is, MCkenzie says to bend toward the painful side in order to push the disc back in its center location. With these conflicting therapy approaches, I wonder if we will have some animated MRI's where one can practice several moves, see what the damn disc does, and choose correctly the right move. That would be pretty expensive procedure but if it avoids surgery and years of pain...
I think the point he was making in this video is after 50+ years old there is nothing to push back in related to a herniated disk as the herniating occurred at a younger age and isn’t really the sudden problem at an older age. Therefore your sudden problem isn’t that you found out about a herniated disk at he older age by virtue of an MRI showing a herniated disk. Thus, this video does not apply to everyone as he pointed out.
To be clear - stretches and exercises offer temporary relief, correct? Until the disc protrusion is absorbed by the body, or removed via surgery, the pain won’t fully resolve itself, right?
Hi Bob, I read about your ataxia. Keep the medication Methylphenidate (Ritalin) in mind. I suffered from blepharospasms and tardive dyskinesia for which there is no treatment. However I am symptom free for 6 years. Methylphenidate first but now I take Dexamfetamine. It performed a miracle 👍🏻 Maybe it could help you with speech and movement
I can hardly walk, stand straight, sit comfortably or lay down in bed. Reaching up makes my calf muscle spasm. Hurts to walk and impossible to run. Being mobility impaired is hazardous while living in California.
I had my evaluation today with a PT. They had me stand on a machine that took a scan on my feet as to how I was standing. The computer made a picture of my skeleton based on my stance. It wasn't good. My feet probate bcz I have high arches, which, the Dr said caused my knees to bend inwards, and my hips to be offset, and everyone else off balance as well. So, I'm still not sure yet where my pains stem from. But this video gives me a great idea. I've tried other stretches, so I'll try this one! Perhaps it may give me relief for my hip/back pain. Thank you! 😊❤️ Loved this ending, it made me laugh! 🤣
Hey B & B, love your work. But I have to say some years ago when I found I could not do the alternate lunges involved in classic xc skiing due to intense pain in my left quad I was diagnosed with a left side disk bulge by a physio around T12. This guy was a Robyn McKenzie trained physio and he had me doing side shifts to the right with my right shoulder against a wall and feet together 2' out from the wall several times a day. Worked a treat and I was back classicing within a week.

mine , L4/L5 had it painful for about 8 months- was scheduled for surgery, kept working out, kept cycling the entire 8 months so I just worked around it, Started doing dead-hangs, at month 7, and about a month later I felt way better and canceled the surgery date. Now-- I did something and it's back, my glute is on fire when I sit..ugh, I am so frustrated!

Listen...thanks for sharin ur story. Needed to hear a positive experience
That’s great news!!
Thank you Sir.....loved the way how you teaching....
God one!
Every time when I think I'm starting to take a step forward I always take two to three steps backwards I never can get going again in the right direction I'm 62 years old now
Hi Bob!
I’m able to release my psoas with Alpha-Stim microcurrent, eliminating pain to right of tailbone. Incredible
I am in so much pain i sometimes feel like I could die.
is surgery better option or spinal decompression therapy or exercise ? which is better ?
We suggest trying all other options before resorting to surgery but sometimes surgery is necessary.
@@BobandBrad Dear sir , I have herniated disc & that is causing constipation , bloating & other issues , I have been to chiropractor 7-8 times but not much help also when I lift weight herniated disc comes back , so do you think i should go to surgery now ? please advice .
That's right Br.... Mike.
I caught that.
Was able to fix my c-5 with chin tucks and a McKenzie pillow ..
(c-4 had to have ADR surgery. 😬)
Hi Bob! Miss you
I wish I could have therapy with you guys. I'm 48 and have been experiencing terrible pain left hip lower back. Had a mri it showed 2 slipped disc l5 and s1. On the right yep right disc left side pain they are sending me to pain clinic. Where I'm sure they will used meds to help me.
Where are you located? We are thinking about having more real patients on the show while doing therapy... It might be an option in the future!
I'm never putting my left arm down again. lol
Where's the taller guy?? Their chemistry is awesome..
Much ❤ for you guys. Thank you.
Will try, thank you!
Needed this one
your channel just gets better and better and funnier and funnier
İ suffered from herniated disk for a kong time.Recently i didn”n have a day without pain.İ bigan swimming and it helped me a lot.
Hi Bob,
I read about your ataxia.
Missing you Bob! 🙏🙏🙏🙏
and best wishes to Bob
Inversion table has made the most difference in my recovery.
Worked a treat and I was back classicing within a week.
hi, could you send me some link (video, picture) of that exercise? would be really helpfull, thank you .)
Hey Bob, Please tell me about Disc Dessication and how to cure it. What type of exercise can I do ?
Bob and Brad, what do you think about doing IDD therapy with the Accu-spina machine?????
Can I please have one of those shirts with Bob and Brad on it. I love it
Those exercises with your arms over your head I've been telling people about before I even seen this . I kinda fell on it by accident on my own they really good
When I do this stretch, my lower spine gets irritated even more. What does that tell you?
LOL I am 60 and have a herniated disc - so I am hoping Mckenzies-Bird dogs-planks-intermittent walks - plus a diet change helps, get back in a few months👍
Hi, I have sciatica in lower legs only due to herniated disk, does the exercises for sciatica showing here works for me.
I love how these feel for my back, but I have bursitis and torn rotator cuffs on both sides with lots of pain and tingling in my fingers which feels CRAZY when doing these for my back. Are they still ok to do? Thanks!!!
I have the same problem. How are you doing now?
mine , L4/L5 had it painful for about 8 months- was scheduled for surgery, kept working out, kept cycling the entire 8 months so I just worked around it, Started doing dead-hangs, at month 7, and about a month later I felt way better and canceled the surgery date.
Now-- I did something and it's back, my glute is on fire when I sit..ugh, I am so frustrated!
what would you do if you cant reach up?
What about cervical disc herniations causing spinal compression? My neurologist want me to have fusion and I’m desperate to avoid this. I’m not in pain. please HELP!
I wish i could find something to help me I have 4 herniated disks, scoliosis, and bi-lateral sciatica what can I do for this I have pain right now and my tens unit on and it's not helping.
start pilates as soon as you can. you will see the difference even after a few classes, of course you should do it one by one lessons and with an expert who knows anatomy well.
@@ipeksoran9554 I live in the Philippines and I'm male you wouldn't catch me in palates I'm 6'4 190lbs and 49 y/o today
What was the second reason
I need to figure out how to grow a disc. Day after day I'm dealing with the spondylolisthesis, ill for over L5, and it's not getting any better. They've offered me fusion but I'm not doing it because it'll just progress worse from there. I need help
Try spinal decompression therapy. It has help me.
I’m only 25 years old , I really need your guys help , I’m an American living in Japan right now and recently due to an accident of me tripping and falling and also passing out on the train , I have several herinated discs in my neck and I’m extremely afraid that they might be getting worse. When I got an MRI none were severe but recently I was laying down in bed and when I went to turn over in bed it did something to my neck and it popped and hurt really bad. I also think I somehow managed to tear both of my Achilles tendons , I don’t know how. I can still walk on them sorta but I can’t flex my foot down very well and I hear pop noises once in a while. The doctors in this rural area haven’t wanted to take care of me much , I’m afraid.
I’m so sorry that sounds awful. I’m not a professional just someone who has some disc issues too from an injury. I hope you get the help you need quickly
Any ideas for people who supposedly have thoracic disc her Kati on where the ribs hurt?
Done my L4&L5 back in 2016 . Currently right now I sneezed and I’m in agony . Taken my morphine as I do twice a day , and no relief
Gentlemen, I found some relief by using my thumb or fist knuckle into the pain area in my back while I was walking. I demonstrated this in front of my VA orthopedic Dr and he said to me, "interesting, thats my rib".
I was diagnosis with herniated disc, when I do the reaching high excercise, my thigh feels numb, why is that?
What do I do if the doctor only ever offers a CT scan instead of an MRI? I haven't gone in for the scan yet.
Get a new doctor
Insist for an MRI. I see no reason for them to deny one
Awww Bob
have you guys tried a reverse hyper? decompresses while strengthening
I have some walking issue I have already checked with Orthopedic, neurologist, physiotherapist but they are not getting problem. They said that ignore it. By this p problem I have leave the office
What about an inversión table tried it and it made my back worse
#1 change u need IS THE WAY U SLEEP
Mate I'm 33 and I have one right now.
How the hell can you sit up and hold your own weight everytime I move my back spasms making it hard to keep still let alone do stretches
Also water is so good I am full of arthritis my entire body oh my do it help
I have a bad disc at C7. That's a hard spot to alleviate
I've laid flat on a yoga mat with a dog rope toy with the knot's on the upper traps. Deep breaths, through the nose. Takes about 20 min to an hour. Keep your shoulders up and back as much as possible. Neck tractions helps to. Ice also. I have a fusion c6-c7 with a bone plug and hardware.
I’m in agony, I think I herniated a disc 2 days ago, I stupidly got in my massage chair just now and I think I made it so much worse.
Thank you Sir
If anyone has see the hook scene in Hellraiser, that's how my legs feel and other times it's my whole body.
Thought you were hoping to say the herniated disk will pop as you get older...
