That is what i thought the aftermarket paneles were like. That is why i bought new titanium gray map pockets. And send them to the interior shop. That did my seats. And redid them in leather. The top black and titanium gray lambo leather and black suede in the middle of the panel. And i am super happy with the way they came out.
I wasted $500 on the exact aftermarket door panels that you’re showing when first restoring my car… I definitely learned my lesson and now very selective on what I will or won’t buy when it comes to aftermarket parts..
Can you take a OEM cardboard door panel section and just trace it out on some thin wood or metal and just make a better replacement? I was thinking of making one of our thin gauge metal instead of cardboard and maybe just use some screws to make it a more sturdy install.
Damn Chris, you are just like all of us,things happen. There a lot of aftermarket crap out there, granted some are actually real good stuff, but majority of things are crap, but some times that is all you can get.
Happened to the previous owner of my Fox. It bothered me so much that I ordered a set of panels, and did the X method. Turned out very nice. You are correct that they are flimsy but, if you're unable to source an OE set, this is what you have to resort to, unless you make them yourself because the market is so limited.
Chris check out replacement headlight dash switches, decals applied instead of silkscreen process used by Ford. Found NOS as a perfect replacement. You are correct some aftermarket is pretty bad.
Actually, it should be pre cut or at least embossed in the exact location where it needs to be cut for the armrest and door lever. And I agree, that is really a flimsy panel! Good idea, but sub par execution. When I was installing my black interior, I was planning to cut a new Masonite lower panel for one side that was really bad, but I was able to find a very nice red panel and merged the two panels together to make one good, solid black panel. I hated doing that, but the results turned out great.
Problem is no one has good crystal blue interior panels. I had a SSP that had a lot of faded or bad panels in crystal blue color. Took me 10 years to find good replacement interior. Plenty of regatta blue out there though.
They almost look like a bluish-gray on camera. I have a set of LMR door panel backing boards here waiting for me to replace on my original OE panels. I had a feeling it was better to rebuild the OE.
I don't think that is TMI... I ordered black panels from them that just recently arrived after a long patient wait and most everything was pre cut and excellent quality. I would guess those to be one of the cheaper brands. TMI will make you wait but its well worth it if you want something done perfect.
Definitely not TMI. The ones I bought were ready to install and were well made. Didn’t have to do any cutting and the backer board was as rigid as the oem. The complaint I had was the color wasn’t spot on.
13 years ago, I fucked my TMI panels up the exact same way. I’m afraid to try another aftermarket set because they seem cheap (even though they are double what I paid for mine back then).
Same shit happen to me on those new door panels. I had to put some small pieces in as well. Shouldn't have to do all the prep for the price you pay for those door panels.
Glad I seen this, although I don’t need door panels. Must be acme. I was thinking of switching my titanium gray to black and getting those. But I decided that everyone does black interior so I want to be different and gray will be original to my car. I seen recently you done a video on that. Thanks for the T.I.P
This is another reason why original clean cars IMO are worth the extra money. Sure you can buy a basket case Fox Mustang for cheap that needs restoration work (interior for example) and have to deal with poor quality aftermarket parts like these door panels. The other alternative is hunting down nice condition factory parts but as we all know finding nice OEM parts for these cars is becoming a task and getting very expensive.
Don’t beat yourself up Chris. The door panels should be pre cut. Thanks for the heads up. I’ll probably invest in getting my door panels reupholstered.
Time has changed. Manufacture cost Instead of using light aluminum for those clips for one door panel they can get eight. And always make your own template even if they send you one
Its a Shame they charge a Premium Price for A really really Cheap knock off !!.. I have the same set and I'm trying to find used oem that's decent enough to where I can re-dye them and get rid of these knock off!!
Most people are cheapskates! So companies cut corners for these customers and of course for their profit. If u want quality of course you'll pay more, so support the better quality companies so they continue to stay in business!
When cutting on things like this you definitely need to not be in a hurry. Take your time and always cut small to start. You can always trim off more if you need to but you sure as hell can't add material back without it looking like pure shit.

Are the plain cardboard panels LMR sells ok?

Thanks for the heads up. If I ever buy aftermarket panels I’ll know not to cut them too much around the door handle 👍🏻
The same thing happened to me when installing my ACC floor carpet. No stencils or markings on where to cut.

What a HOT mess!! I appreciate your honest review!
I wonder if you can add a layer of resin/mesh over the cardboard to stiffen them up a little.

i bought TMI door panels from cj pony parts for $500 they have plastic instead of cardboard they are not bad but not OE fit I'm happy with them.

Like they say stuff happens when You least expect it, but
You can overcome. Great content . Thank You.
i just did these yesterday i wish i saw this video BEFORE i did everything

Ya they remind me of the charcoal/black color on pre-90 dashes on the top part.

I don't know about that, ordered a set of tmi panels from npd and both had fitment issues, still waiting on replacements

Took a mental note of that Thank you
Ima still nervous to cut mines lol I had them brand new for 3 months

Good video, thanks for sharing.
I’m the same. I’d pay for quality any day of the week.
This is a great video and thank you for the info!!!!

Great tip, does aftermarket door panels stinks, piece of garbage, love your videos
Might be best to restore a factory panel

The aftermarket is killing the classic car hobby with junk
