"Chef" is an adaptation in the truest sense. Menon takes the source story and a few scenes but spins a new narrative around it. He has a fantastic cast and an incredibly talented DP on board. This is Saif redeeming himself after having done "Humshakals". Svar Kamble, Padmapriya and Chandan Roy Sanyal are all pretty good, as is Milind Soman. The writing was the chief flaw, like you said. Things are wrapped up really fast but the dialogue is really good and that scene with the goons of the worker's union especially so. "Chef" is a nice break from nonsense that Bollywood churns out (Judwaa, Judwaa). It also breaks the stereotype of the relationship of former spouses. Really enjoyed it despite the writing issues.
Chef have father and son relationship.
And that's touched my heart closely.
It's like traveling the world with father.
It's great and joy to watch it.
🙌🙌🙌🙌
The acting of Saif Ali Khan was superb
I always love him.
4 star by me☺
I'm going with
The English version of this movie is very very close to my heart. So have to see this one as well.
The saddest part about movies trying to adapt a pan India food theme to tell a story, is their cliched depiction of Indian food. India, in their world, exists either in the north or in the south. There is no other direction. A non-Indian would be forgiven to believe that all Indians eat only aloo parathas, butter chicken, dosa, idli, appams and oh yea.. palak paneer! No one, and I mean no one, explores food from other parts of India -- like koraishutir kochoris, bajre ki bhakri, moong dal ki sabzi, undhiyo or puranpolis! Are they never featured because their names are too difficult to pronounce? Well then, how about khichdi and kadhi? I guess we should stick to puchkas aka pani puris aka gol gappas for a pan India feel! Or like Chef would have it.. roti pizza for that international tadka!
Absolutely. The prob might be that a lot of Indians themselves aren't aware of the variety.
Chef - Best movie of #SaifAliKhan in a long long time. Well cooked & Served.
Amazing review!
Thank you for ratings. I really miss them in other FC reviews by Sneha may Francis's & Sucharita's reviews!

Anupama had given a sensible review. Film like this should do well in box office unlike shitty movie Juduwa 2. We should come out from Bollywood masala to those movie which have soul in it.Hope this film do well for saif
Anupama, don't forget kannada movies too! There have been awesome kannada movies made in the recent past that are worth watching: godhi banna, U turn, pancharangi, Rama rama re etc...
#Chef - Bheja Fry on the menu!
First, let me tell you that this Chef(Saif) doesn't cook, unless you count the 'Bheja Fry' that he makes of audience's mind. On adaptation level it fails miserably, the story is neither western nor Indian, somewhere it gets too western at other times it will try to infuse curry or put Indian tadka on a pizza.
Coming back to this Chef doesn't cook, I was not being sarcastic, seriously I was being honest. For a movie that calls itself Chef - Saif cuts 1 tomato and an Onion, makes tomato chutney and that's all on the menu - I am sure the unit went crazy, a Chef that cuts tomato!!! who doesn't want to see that?? brilliant !! picture toh hit hai...for next scene we ll make him chop an onion - wow, super hit bhai..and get this he will also make a chutney! amazing ...super-duper hit! forget Padmavati watch this even in December, its definitely going to be in theatres till next year (only in Saif's dreams)
The fusion food track is also limited to one mamuli dish which school kid can make..and for Robert Downey Jr's role we have #MilindSoman at this point I wanted to throw-in the 'Chef's hat' and run miles away, and attention #MenakaGandhi Milind owns an Elephant, and guess why ?? because he is in Kerela! got it! superb na!
#Saif's character is wishy washy and at times I thought he was mentally challenged or so it seemed considering the character he plays is erratic, irrational man-child, its all just utter rubbish, no character shines through at all, barely two scenes seem good and on hind sight not even that. The bonding between father son seems very induced, its like the makers are saying 'ab saath me cook kia hai to bonding toh hogi hi na..dekho original movie me to aisa hi hota hai..yaha bhi hoga' but this chef never cooked ...kaha ka chef, sirf double decker bus le ke aa gaya !???
The point is, the whole movie seems lost in translation, the father son chemistry, other characters nothing seems right, its a total Bheja Fry - 1 star, use the ticket money on a good dish, cooked by a real hard working #Chef
I know I'm 3 years late to this party. But hear me out, I agree so much with what you are saying, and it's sad to see so many people liking this movie for whatever mess it is. The remake is indeed lost in translation with so many scenes which make no sense to the narrative and serve no other purpose. And as for the acting, the only person I liked was Alex and he is in the movie for hardly 15 mins.
Chef - (3/5) - Sugary Bite!
Chef directed by Raja Krishna Menon (Airlift fame) is a subtly crafted film which targets at leaving you with a broad smile on your face, and it quite victoriously manages to do that. What steps in though are small problems of reality and conflicts which seem missing, thus the sweetness enters the zone of concentration.
Chef inspired from the 2014 hit, titled the same is the story of Roshan K, a michelin star chef passionate about cooking but lost and deprived of a happy life. His anger levels are on a rise and his hands seem to be losing the flavour they had years ago. He is fired from his job, and he decides to take a tour to Cochin to meet his ex wife and his son, in search of spending merry time with his son. But in the process he gets to embrace love, life and flavours and begins to rediscover himself.
For a hindi film, it is a rather new concept, I was really pleasured to see a film handle something more than a love story or a thriller or an action film. The first half offers us something different yet something not very delicious. There is subtlety, smoothness that's there but our characters don’t really do much on screen because of the sloppy writing, which leads to the first half feeling like a bit of a slog. The cinematography is beautiful, those scenes of Cochin wanted me to rush to the South. Though the same can’t be said for the food, the shots of food didn’t really leave me hungry, about which I was really hopeful. (after all I was equipped with a big tub of popcorn in my hand)
The second half is what is the sugar rush here. There are scenes after scenes that just managed to extend my smile that after a point I really couldn’t control tearing up. The father son relationship explored more beautifully towards the second act leaves you with a melting heart. What also works in the second half are the performances, a stunning special appearance and that utterly charming food truck that really left me with an urge to grab a bite there. Though if analysed critically, every problem of every character gets sorted too easily but I really don't mind since I could feel the positivity and cheerfulness running through me.
Saif Ali Khan delivers beyond par, the role just fits to every pore and dimension to his. Padmapriya is utterly beautiful, she has a poise to herself which brings grace to the screen everytime she is there. But the one with whom I am largely impressed was the debutant, Svar Kamble playing Armaan, he plays the 11 year old with flair, conflicted yet friendly. The music is delicious here, all thanks to Raghu Dixit. So go grab a bite of this dessert, it’s your dose of sugar for the week. I am going with three out of five.
#Chef the movie has an interesting first half and a bit lengthy second half, the movie talks about emotions and conflicts of an individual's journey, while managing work life balance...
Saif for a change is subtle, he has managed to leave behind some of his intrinsic traits and done well in this role.
Padmapriya is good in her character and is independent in most scenes and dependant in few. It was refreshing to see Milind Soman on screen and he is impressive as ever..
Svar kamble the kid looks promising
Dinesh prabhakar and chandan roy are good in their characters too..
Music is refreshing, so is Raghu Dixit's cameo..
So all in all the movie has a simple plot of work life balance but the shot taking and scene construction make it beautiful to watch..
screenplay is good but still a bit too convenient towards resolution..
Go for this family entertainer this week, it has flavours of food and tips for parenting wrapped in it.
Just like last week, this is also a remake. It has been remade from an English movie 'Chef' from 2014. But it is great to see that it is not a frame to frame remake, but the plot of course remains the same. Do not expect it to be food driven movie, it is more of a character driven movie. The movie is more about father-son relationship. Saif Ali Khan has done a great work and he has got in the skin of the character. The emotion is great but does not entirely swallow you in it. Music does add to the screenplay but movie today has become more of an EXPERIENCE, that is where it falls short.

Oh boy atleast they credit the remake now 🙃
Hopefully the repackaging will stop n we will see something good from scratch. Come on it's a huge industry !!!
Comparing it with Jon Favreu's adaptation seems unfair considering the forwds watching expect different things.
The visuals of food, though pretty, don't seem enough, especially if you're a 3 star Michelin chef.
Watching the cast, act and not over play their parts makes you want to stay anyway. Saif's always been a good actor, but labelled underrated and this film probably will be received the same way.
Was waiting for this 🤗
I like your and Rajiv Masand's reviews. Lately I feel both of your reviews are highly homogeneous. Not a bad thing at all, just saying. Will still watch your reviews since they are plainly honest and somehow my views match with yours on most movies. :)
Chef Released?
Thank you so much! How can I redeem my gift?
I cant recall the last time Anupama gave a good review of a film..chef was much better than any other films released in recent times.. i dont understand how saif's scenes with milind could be some of the best scenes in film..have u totally lost it?

You don't comment on vfx of the movie
Her and rajeev say so many similar things
The Original Chef (2014) movie had a vibe, characters were well defined & layered, food was a live & intriguing element of the story binding everything together, with top notch acting by the entire cast. This Chef (2017) by saif is just a cheap mimicry of it which irritates you if you have seen the original. Even Saif's acting is not upto the mark. Piece of irrelevance. Only the son in the movie 'Ary' was worth watching. One of your rare reviews i totally disagree with.
No "have you seen chef" comments?
Ma nema chegg
who has seen food wars anime?
This movie was so damn frustrating. it was just so average, mediocre and really slowly paced. There is no urgency to the story, absolutely no investments to be made into the characters and really stale and cheesy dialogues. Every third dialogue, especially between Roshan and his son seem to be written as filmy life lessons which sound really cringe inducing and seem artificial
We are never really shown Saif's character's passion towards cooking and his anger issues seem to be just a convenient plot device. Also the movie takes weird diversions towards his ex wife's new boyfriend, union leaders, random cops taking bribes - it is just rather odd.
The only redeeming quality was Saif- who delivered a breezy and effortless performance and the mature handling of a modern couple past divorce. Glad to see Saif get his mojo back, even if it is in such an uninspired film.
Saif needs to get away from this director..he never delivers
This movie wont work in india as people still love to watch shitty movies like judwa 2
micky ahuja i totally agree!! i m so disappointed in us as an audience 😢
but its not made properly thats y critics gave it 3 star dont blame audience no one wanted so much melodrama in cooking movie
Bhai NEWTON got it's due without any specific marketing,Audience are smart nowadays SAIF ALI KHAN entire career only powerful performance is LANGDA TYAGI...Rest of the characters could have been played by anyone....
Vikas Mishra.. Newton was an intense film even it is nominated for oscars but it didn't make any good business at box office however judwa2 is the shittiest movie and is a massive hit of the year and made huge money... I don't think it signify the smart audience.. And about saif ali khan... I dont like him much but atleast he tries to make sensible movies.. if u watch chef I agree its not a great work but its just a simple movie that u wont regret watching...
true
Can u plzz review tu hai mere sunday..
Glad dat in dis worse judwaa era der r amazing actors lyk aamir n saif...
Atleast spoiler alert to de do madam, poori film suna di.
Saif Ali khan comeback
why dont you make movie than if you know how to criticise others work, slow narrative, pacing of the film if its not of your like then its your issue, this is the vision of the creator. not all movie needs fully "baked" climax
only just saying : well my dear friend, its called opinion... Why are even here if you can't handle one ! The original movie is a delightful so people like us want to know the criticism ! When there isn't substance it doesn't matter weather its 'raw' or 'baked'
lol that's her job dude ? It's like asking testers to develop rather than finding flaws in the output of a program 🤣🤣 critic is needed

Original movie is also called 'Chef'. It's available on Netflix.
Saif o saif
Seems so biased , it’s a shitty remake of a nice movie.
movie reviewers in India first need to learn how to review movies. Just narrating the entire movie and saying what they liked and didn't can't be called a movie review

Saala Ye Bollywood waale ab ya toh remake karne lage hain ya fir recycling.2017 main toh Newton ko chodkar ek bhi dekhne layek film nahi hain sab ek so ek ghatiya.Ye Sahrukh Salman KaranJohar kaab Bollywood chodkar chala jayenge .Chutiye these three are the reason why Bollywood has never progressed in terms of quality.
You seem more like you're putting the blame entirely on a few stars. That's unfair. One of the main reasons why Bollywood is making a lot of bad movies is because many big names have formed a sort of union which stands up for each other. That's how people like Sajid Khan have survived. Also, most of the population of India lives in rural areas and would not prefer to see movies as Newton. Salman, SRK and Karan Johar at least have some good movies to their names. Bollywood needs a reform and that is slowly happening with people like Anurag Basu and Rajkumar Rao. We as an audience need to show a lot more maturity.
You are saying that Newton was the only watchable movie of 2017. That's not true. We had Hindi Medium, Ghazi Attack, Bareily ki Barfi and Badrinath ki Dulhaniya. However, it indeed is a very dull year for Bollywood.
SRK Salman Johar or anyone else is not the issue. It's the audience who pays for shit movies made by these people. Don't blame them, blame the people who pay to watch absolute crap. For eg Judwaa was such a pathetic movie yet made tons of money.
