How did your first year in your saddle go? Did you saddle hunt this past season as well?
@@houseatreides6683 First year was a learning experience. I quickly discovered Jon was right in his teachings. The saddle is my main way of hunting now. I still have a couple climbers I leave out, but it is saddle 95% of the time. I have 6 or 8 kills out of it. I use a ring of tree hopper steps with a hawk platform. The first time I practiced from a tree I quickly discovered the need for a rig of steps to shoot behind the tree. You have next to zero stability otherwise. I ordered tree hoppers steps that evening. Having the ROS allowed me to get shots on a doe and a hog that I would not have been able to get otherwise. The other big thing is having a rig of bow hangers like Jon suggested. I made my own for cheap with aluminum flat rod as shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/fBxnYQyb6sg/v-deo.html . It helps a lot when positioning. You can hang your bow a hook over, let line out of your tether, and get into position. I tried ROS only and couldn't get used to it. I like having the platform. It makes leaning more comfortable and helps with saddle adjustments.

I have a predator xl platform and I plan to get squirell steps (ring of steps) soon for precisely the reasons you said and so that I can have a full 360 degrees to hide from deer so that no matter what direction they come from I can just slide around the tree as needed to keep the tree in front of me and stay out of their line of sight. I agree with everything you said. I don't want to saddle hunt without my platform NO WAY AM I DOIN THAT LOL. I gotta have more than those Itty bitty ROS when I'm 20 feet up a tree. I'm just not comfortable without my platform cause I'm not exactly crazy about heights...

Wow, So much information. Most people can not appreciate the information John is giving up here. Nobody alive today has or offers this kind of information. I'v been hunting deer for 48 plus years and if I pay attention John still learns me something. Movement means failure and John is an expert on movement control.. Watch and learn

Thank you and the Tethrd crew, because for 40+ years I’ve been hanging on for dear life hanging stands and now I find out from you guys last year what a lineman’s belt is used for. Actually feel foolish now that you’ve shown me what a lineman’s belt does. Also your comment about just put a few steps around the back of the tree was real helpful. I know you’ve saved me and others many many years of trial and error.

I've been saddle hunting since 2018. My first saddle was the aero hunter kestrel. I gifted that one to my son and purchased a second aero hunter merlin. I Just recently purchased a LoneStar 2.0 from TX 5 custom gear.
I like gleaning from your expertise. I've never carried a backpack but I now see the need. I use the Step Ladder climbing system (Wild Edge, Inc.). It's quiet and good for a 61 year guy to ascend and descend a multitude of trees safely. I do have a trophy-line platform, however, prefer the ring of steps. Thanks for the great content.

i have worked as a lineman for the telephone company for 42 years. we used to put our linemans belt over the catv cable and take our hooks out of the pole to rest our feet. this was similar to what you are doing in a sadde we would do this while waiting on the lasher to get to us with the cable very comforrtable

Harvested my nicest buck a couple days ago and this video helped me do that, still us a platform but have screw in steps (property owner permission) on each side of it, buck came in and I had time to put one foot on a step and one a platform to create the angle needed, thanks for the video and knowledge

Love the saddle John! I have a few trees saddles I worked from that are comfortable but not like the two panel.
I could never manipulate my tree saddles like I can the 2 panel.
I just run my safely tail through my d rings to tighten it around my waste to walk in or out. Works perfect and perfect price compared to most for the working man.
Sorry for writing a book but love your videos and you remind me of my 86-year-old grandfather. He's a no b******* straightforward hard ass old man no offense, lol that's still going strong and I have learned a lot from him.
I use a lot of different techniques like tying in with a rope like I did in tree work but I've learned a lot from your videos. Appreciate them a lot and plan on listening to the podcast. God bless you John take care.

I swore i would never, ever hunt with a saddle, but after reading "Bowhunting Pressured Whitetails" i ordered a Trophyline EDP platform and tried it out with my rock climbing harness....... immediately fell in love and totally comfortable working around the tree 22 feet up, so now i have a saddle on the way. Treestand is gonna be collecting dust this year. Hopefully i can get a nice deer and get some footage and make a video with the deer before i drag it out, so that i can thank you for all the helpful videos and the great info in your books ! LOVE the tether girth hitch knot and the lower tether height, they both worked very well for me !!!

Very educational. I’ve been using climbers for 20 years sitting 20+ feet. While the summit viper is only 20lbs I would love to drop that weight and be less visible. Still leery climbing with a saddle just don’t have any experience yet
Great video John! Not sure why you'd stay on the same side of the tree as rhe deer. I use both a predator platform or ROS depending in the situation. I like em both. If I'm on an all day sit with my platform and need to reposition on the other side of the tree for the afternoon, I just climb onto my top step and just move my platform to the backside then step back on to it for the rest of the day.
Looking forward to first time saddle hunting this year. New gear is on the way. Thanx for sharing your expertise John. Should up my game a bit in Missouri bow-only public land this season.

I wish you would have came out with this type of saddle content a while ago. I think it would have saved a lot of new saddle hunters time and money but I’m glad you are doing it now. Please keep up the videos, I look forward to seeing them. Also thank you for calling out all the BS in the hunting industry it has been steering hunters in the wrong directions and leading to false expectations. Keep calling it out! Good luck this year.

Just tried to find the saddle you prefer to hunt out of and can’t find it… I know materials are hard to come by theses days …as I work in construction, so I understand completely. Wondering if you could send me in the right direction in purchasing the saddle you prefer to hunt out of … my season starts oct 2.. I know a little late, but I can see the pros over the negative.
I know you don't worry about the wind when hunting as it pertains to scent, but I would love to see a video of some of your setups and how you assume the bucks will use the wind to enter into an area. Thanks for the great videos I watch all of them and enjoy them!

If you one stick, you’re not gonna want to do that girth hitch bc you’re frequently going from your main rope to your linesman to go around branches etc. I have a caribeaner on the end loop and can quickly wrap around the tree and clip or unclip from the rope. Some say caribeaners aren’t designed for a side load but I’ve read what my caribeaners are rated for with a side load and it’s well within my level of comfort.
I’m just now getting into hunting and have been hiking my local wma’s and I realized a climbing stand wasn’t gonna work for me. So I’ve been researching everything and I’ve decided on one sticking. Are you saying you use a carabiner on both ends for your tree tether to get around branches easier. I was planning on making a tree tether rope, a lineman’s rope, and then having a separate rappel rope and little retrieval rope. At first I’m planning on using all traditional knots and methods. Prusiks and figure 8 rappel. So my question are you saying the carabiner isn’t supposed to be used as a loop around the tree but your confident in it
I like a ring of steps. I use wild edge with a perch its call a platform but it like a big step. An public land legal.
They are pretty popular strap ons.

ScentLok is coming out with a new pack this fall and it is a BE1 - Grinder and I have no clue what it looks like or is made of, just know it's new for 2021.
Just got my ESS yesterday. It is so much more comfortable compared to my aerohunter evo.
How about a comparison video between the ESS and the old tree saddle you used for all those years?
John, thank you for taking my suggestion on changing clothing while in the saddle. I used your new ESS last year for the first time as a new saddle hunter. On my first day, I sat in your ESS all day without any trouble. I hunted in WI for rifle season, so I had to figure out how to hunt in your ESS with a rifle as well and to be able to change my layers of clothing. It was a true learning experience, but your ESS made it really easy to stay in the tree. I used the new Predator XL platform. I was wondering what type of steps would you recommend to use with that platform? I hunt public land. Thanks for sharing your knowledge to all of us hunters.
I would suggest calling Dennis at Cranford treestep Mfg. (number is on website) and put your name on a waiting list for a Cranford saddle scafflod ring of steps and I would suggest purchasing at least 2 extra steps for the ring as the unti only comes with 4 steps and you can add as many as you want to the strap.
Great information but my biggest question is when you have to take a leak with the saddle on how does that work?
Appreciate the info John, made myself a double panel saddle, but the panels were separate, so they don’t adjust like yours. So I’m made an improvement to sew them together so they will adjust. Was using D rings already and used my lineman’s rope on them , but will make some lineman’s loops with tubular webbing filled with plastic or rope , Was worrying about a platform but ditched that and made two nice sets of steps. Had a trophyline for decades so I understand the advantages of saddle hunting.

You are also using a tree that is perfectly straight.. when switching sides of the tree if it is leaning one direction more vs other you will run into problems

Hi John first off I just want say thank you for sharing all your knowledge with the public. I grew up in Gratiot County MI so all of your episodes hit deep for me. NOW I HAVE A 8YEAR OLD SON MY NEW HUNTING PARTNER I want to put him in a saddle but im not for sure which saddle would be good for him. Maybe in 2023, there is something in the works for 2022. ScentLok does have a new BE-1 backpack for 2021 but I have no idea what it is like.

He was saddle hunting before anyone could spell it....circa 1981. There's almost no place you can't hunt with a saddle, and done right I've felt safer in one than a self climber or hang on. Still, it's a radical change from traditional stands.....probably not for everyone.

I put a monkey bar on each side of my platform and it is Money!! I have been doing it since I tried a ROS by itself but wanted a platform so I could pee easier. I can get all the way around the tree with 1 step on each side, EZ!

John i have the books on your approach to kill bucks but I'm going to take and don't the security cover trick not much of a shot for me but I can pie plate at 70 yards but I don't want to shoot a young buck how would you get a look at him without alarming him and cutting limbs

It's a lot of work
When doing so many clothing changes, are you concerned with scent dispersal throughout all that activity? I try to regulate my temperature by going in slow in the mornings. For afternoon hunts I sometimes take a vest and put it on under my ScentLok jacket. I change as quickly as I can to reduce how long I'm exposed without my ScentLok jacket on.

I plan on doing another more detailed van video this fall during season when my van is loaded for the season. The last one I did for Tethrd was 48 minutes and it was a spur of the moment video, so a new one would be longer.

Great informative video John I was wondering you mentioned using a fawn in distress call; under what circumstances would you use it?
Interesting question and I took a book buck in 2005 by using a Quaker Boy fawn in distress call. There was a big buck moving through a swampy area with a hot doe and they were heading away from me on an evening hunt. I did a sparring sequence and the buck turned and looked in my direction but had no interest as he was with a doe. So I tried a grunt call and then a doe in bleat with similar reactions but he stayed with the doe as they kept moving farther away. I had a fawn in distress call for coyotes and thought, what the hell, I'll try to call in the doe and if she comes in, he will follow. I hit the call for a couple seconds and the doe turned and came right to the tree with the buck following and I took him at 5 yards. She came into the fawn in distress and he was a dead bystander.
First of all I have never hunted with a saddle but I am interested in them. You have mentioned not using a platform but doesn't standing on the steps hurt your feet? I compare it to standing on a ladder and that kills my feet.
He doesn’t stand in the saddle he sits so it takes 90% of the weight off your feet

Have you ever worn this type of material? Its rated for cold weather.its very light & reduces sweat big time.just wanderi g if you have ever worn or recomend it for an under garmet? Thanks.

What are you using to hang your quiver in the tree?
For many years all bows had 2 threaded holes on the side for quivers and they made quiver brackets that screwed into the tree. I use a 30 year old PSE Mongoose sight and quiver and the quiver fits onto the screw in holder.
What kind of rope are guys using for their saddle hitch ?
