People need to understand that family will be the first to betray you, lie to you, gossip about you, be cruel to you, belittle you, mistreat you, gaslight you and over all be the most toxic to you, now you need to decide whether or not family is is better or worst for you
They’re not protecting Fiona in my mind. They’re protecting themselves from the embarrassment of being lied and deceived to the point they put themselves into debt and struggle. The fact they used all their money for retirement on her debt shows how clueless and desperate they are to maintain whatever image they had while still cuddling Fiona. OP is right to cut the off.
Without a scapegoat, they will reach their limit at some point. But if OP was enough of a doormat to reconnect with them, that would have been the ending.

had she given up the savings the parents wouldnt have even taken the accountability on fiona's behalf and told the OP to brush it off its good that she didn't cave in also i dont understand parents who make rules for their kids, get angry or nag the elder kid when they dont follow it but defend the younger one saying they are young and still just a kid its either you execute the rule for both of them together or keep a track on when u made ur elder one follow a rule like saving up or helping with chores and when the younger reaches that age you make them follow it too those who dont do this and instead nag one and defend the other are bad at parenting my parents do this but not to a great extent only for small stuffs, like wash the dishes but when i ask why my younger brother cant wash them they say he is little and i didnt washed dishes at that age, but then they recently started giving both of us equal pocket money and when i told them i never got pocket money at his age so they should atleast give me more then my sibling, they say it wont be right to treat their kids differently, also i have never heard them speak ill of my brother's friend in front or behind his back but they have always spoken ill of all the friends i have had up until now, humans have flaws and we all r just kids yet they told me every single one of my friends are wrong, and then when i would point out my borther's gaming addiction came from his friends and also because my parents bought him a good gaming laptop while they made me work out things on 10+yr old laptop for until "they could afford" to buy one for my STUDIES, they shush me up by saying he is a kid let him be focus on yourself i have detatched myself from them emotionally, its only a matter of some months before i get to leave them probably forever for college (i aint visiting them during my breaks, i will go out on trips with my friends or go to my grandparents) but they arent horrible, just too.... idk, double standard?? and i really dont want to cut my brother off cuz apart from being a bit spoiled he has a good heart and aint stupid to be manipulated, plus he does respect me as i am older than him
They were in victims your parents are in victims they knew what they were doing and they did it cuz they wanted to and now they got to suffer the consequences what would happen if you would have given them your college tuition
