I bought a 2019 Kona Electric Ultimate June 1, 2019. I love it. Ride is comfortable; power is amazing!; interior is comfy. A full charge starts me out with 295-325 miles. It varies I do not know why. Probably has something to do with the end charging cycle and how it determines a full charge. I am getting a good 270 actual miles in a mix of city/rural driving daily. Normally I can charge up on Saturday and go the entire week without recharging until the following Saturday. With my electric rates at home it costs me about $5.25 to charge for the week. with a level 2 charger. I highly recommend checking out this Hyunda Kona Electric if you are considering buying an electric car. Currently they are only available in CA, OR and MD. I actually drove from NC to MD to buy mine. Was worth the road trip.

It's too bad but the car has over a 2 year waiting list due to a battery shortage. Kona uses batteries from LG Chemicals, and LG is not enough to crank out enough batteries for all their customers. So this car is going to have limited sales unless they solve the battery shortage problem.

Or buy the non-electric, and have WAAAAY lower true cost to own monthly, because electric vehicle resale is still absolutely horrific. Nobody trusts the used expensive batteries, and they become obsolete way too quick. You can still get $25K for a 2001 Corvette that was $40K new. But a $35K Fiat 500e you are lucky to get $10K for a few years later, as nobody wants that little 80 mile range anymore.

This is serious. I don't use my car for daily commute here in Europe, only for visiting family, the occasional mall and the yearly 3000km driving holiday. 500 km at 50mph still uses more power than drafting a lorry at 56-60mph, so this would work. Remember Germany was the cutting edge of EVs in the 90's, specialized aerodynamic lightweight cars and Ni-Cd batteries. When you get going again, 500km is on a bad day.

My Kona Electric is being built and is due for delivery in Canada in February! Super stoked. The one feature I wish they would implement over the UK/Norway versions of the vehicle is the Blue Link (app support). It's a small piece, but it seems like that one thing that's missing from this vehicle comparative to other EVs.

I don't see why they wouldn't offer BlueLink support in Canada because my '19 Veloster Turbo has BlueLink, and I live in Canada. Odds are, BlueLink will in fact work after all.
As an aside, BlueLink is pretty much useless to anyone with a manual since you can't use remote start. You can still turn on lights and unlock the door, but the app is so slow on my iPhone when connecting to the car that it becomes an inconvenience.

I like the Kona but must admit that I dream of a Model 3. I would consider buying the Kona if it had more legroom in the rear and the price difference to a Model 3 is going to be substantial. However, this car is just too small if you plan on using the rear seats for adults or long legged teenagers from time to time. The Kia Niro has a bit better rear space than the Kona but it doesn't please my eyes as much. I'm currently leaning towards reserving a Model 3 soon and meanwhile keep an eye on what else will be available within a year or two from now.

I am totally a fan of this car. I think it is the best EV (available soon) at a similar price point to a model 3. I am very impressed by the range of this vehicle for its chassis and class (258 miles of range w/ 64 kWh battery). This is comparable to Model 3 mid range of 260 miles (with an assumed 60 kWh pack). I like the look of the front pattern more than a grill and it makes the car more efficient. The interior looks nice but nothing too fancy. Tesla is still a decade ahead in infotainment and OTA updates that make it better all the time but at least this car has Android/Apple car play. I think Tesla's interior is still better overall but this one is nice and has a normal car feel to it.
The mid range model 3 is still quicker accelerating, higher top speed, faster charging, and better handling (I haven't driven a Kona but the model 3 I had a test drive in had insanely responsive handing and was fun to drive). All model 3s come with self-driving hardware standard no matter what you pay for the car so you always have the option to buy autopilot/self-driving at a later date and have it activated in your car literally overnight.
Can't wait for your model 3 review. Make sure you get used to the touch screen before you give a verdict. Many people are quick to judge it if they review it without using it much first. And most importantly, make sure you review a recently manufactured one. Tesla does not use the model year system. They make changes to their cars whenever a new fix or feature is ready.

First, a voluminous battery supply chain, thanks to their huge investment in their Gigafactory. Every indication I know of says that the Kona EV will be in very short supply for at least a year or even two.
Second, Tesla’s SuperCharger network. As yet at least, there are *no* CHAdeMO/CCS quick chargers at least on the road-trip routes I ever take, but SuperChargers there are, along with more charging options at those destinations. Hopefully that will change though...

The best part is "you can really feel the TORQUE" 0:55 X-D. The Kona EV is a fantastic choice. I like the Ioniq, but it's lacking in range and a couple of features that I consider essential. I prefer the Kona's push-button, gear changer and it's unique style of course.. great vid btw. good job!

Ok, besides that the rear seat space is rather limited, the price in Europe starts at 45k EUR and no promise on delivery time. Expected in May 2019 at the earliest.

Oh damn. If only we still had the incentive for EV's, this would be my next car, lol.

You are not i the USA since no incentives are gone in the USA. What other country would take out EV incentives?

Tax incentives for Tesla get cut in half starting next year, is that what you mean? They will not be not gone, just cut in half and it hasn't happened yet, and lawmakers are trying to change the law to not punish early movers in the EV space like the current law does.

0ooTheMAXXoo0 TheStraightPipes and a lot of their viewers live in Ontario, Canada. Recently our new provincial “government” decided to kill a bunch of green energy incentives, including the EV discount that was upwards of $14,000.

Yup. They are less like a government and more like a viking raiding party. Hacking and burning everything down with no plans to build anything for themselves.

The Kona EV is a great option. I test drove a Bolt EV about a year ago but didn't bite. I love the Ioniq but it's lacking in range and a feature or two that are must-haves for me. The Kona is nearly perfect in my book, but I'm holding out for the Niro EV since it's looking like the whole package - even though I prefer the Kona's push button gear selector and it's styling.

Excuse me, what? CAD 45-50K for a subcompact non-premium crossover? Please tell me it's a joke. If not, we are indeed VERY far from the EV age. Like at least 10 years away.

It depends on how far you drive per year. Fuel cost and repair bills will in the long run make any cheap combustion car very expensive compared to an ev.

Well, let's consider a typical 5 year ownership.
With average annual 12.5K miles both cars will go about 60K miles during 5 years.
Let's take regular Kona for comparison. It starts at $18500 and the top trim is $25900. Of course, we will take the top trim for comparison just for the heck of it.
It's a new car, so repairs do not apply to either car here, because it's covered by manufacturer's warranty (Hyundai has at least 5 year / 60K miles warranty).
Now let's see what the cost of ownership for Kona EV would be: around 40 full charges annually, coming to about 200 charges over the course of 5 years. With 12 cents per KW, each charge is going to cost around $9, making it $1800 over the course of 5 years. Consider NO maintenance (although it's not true, as you will need maintenance regardless of this being the EV, but just for fun). So in the end of 5 years you will have paid $52K.
And what about regular Kona? Gas mileage is 30 MPG on average, so the car will need approximately 2000 gallons of fuel over the course of 5 years. With average cost of gas in US at $2.60 per gallon that comes to... $5200 for gas over the course of 5 years. Let's add maintenance expenses at a whopping $1000 annually, so another $5000 for maintenance (this is way too unrealistic, of course, but let's consider this anyway). So in the end of 5 years the owner of the top trim of Kona will have paid $36100. Remember, this is considering overkill with maintenance ($1000 annually).
So, in conclusion, even if we consider that Kona EV will cost $40K (which is the lowest projection), the owner of regular Kona will save about $4 grand owning a NON EV vehicle.
Yes, I am aware of various electrical vehicles government rebates, but you get the idea: I took the worst possible scenario for an ICE vehicle and compared it to the best case scenario for an EV. So we will not see any sort of a mass adoption of EVs until EVs of the same class, trim and similarly equipped will cost the same as the ICE powered vehicles.

Wow. You americans must be rich if you scrap your cars after 5 years with so little mileage. ;-)
Second hand value of a Kona EV will be higher than the petrol car. A lot higher. A petrol car might not have any value in 5 years. Yes, an EV only makes financial sense in the US if you drive high mileage. In most other developed parts of the world gas costs 2-3 times what it costs in US and polluting cars are taxed higher. An EV makes a lot more sense in most developed countries. Just looking at the sticker price doesn't give you the total cost of ownership.

Andreas first of all, I’m Canadian, just like the reviewers in the video. But it doesn’t really matter. And no, you don’t need to scrap your car after 5 years. You just move onto another one. Now to the point of value of your car after 5 years, yeah, it better be more for a car that costs twice more than an ICE car!!! As for the price of gas 3 times more than in US, exactly what countries are you talking about? You are probably considering some European countries, although even that is not true. Well, let me remind you that the overall area of the whole Europe is just a little bigger than the whole US territory. Cities are much closer, they don’t have those vast traveling distances in Europe and public transportation is much more developed. In fact, unlike in US, owning a car in Europe is not a necessity. Besides, in this video they review a car for North America, and my analysis was for North America as well, so your realia are not applicable here.

@@AcuraAddicted Oh, I'm sorry for calling you an American. You mentioned US gas price. I said 2-3 times but that wasn't correct. It's mostly just 2 times the price. I know Canada is a vast country but I can promise you that we travel a lot by car in Europe too. Electric cars needs to be cheaper but they will probably never be as cheap as petrol cars. Maintenance costs are too low so manufacturers needs to get money in advance. They can however still make a lot of economic sense even at today's high prices if you consider the cars total lifespan. If you add up all the petrol, taxes and service costs for an ordinary combustion car that's been driven for at least 300000km it does get quite expensive in most developed countries.
