  • Helldivers 2 just released two new weapon stratagems into the game, the LAS-99 Quasar Cannon and the MG-101 (MG-206) Heavy Machine Gun. One is insanely good, and could easily become the new meta. The other, needs a hard look because it's terrible. We break down both weapons and share some important tips and tricks you need to know before you drop in.

    If they wanted to make the machine gun stand out, a belt fed MG with a back pack could’ve been the move.

    Would love to see them move the stalwart to a primary weapon, like in the first game, and buff the HMG to replace it. Or add another light machine gun as a primary in the future.

      I would agree with this. Their philosophy around primary weapons is a bit weird in my opinion. Very few weapons are viable and that relegates us to choosing just a couple options. It shouldn’t be this way.

      Yeah, the stalwart is insanely fun to use, but not very effective above difficulty 3-4. I think if they cut the mag size down and increased the recoil a bit it would be a pretty balanced primary.

      Most of the support weapons should already be primary weapons or at least part of your normal loadout.

      @jonhack2585you shouldn't just assume everyone has teammates with dedicated roles. some people just solo queue and play with randoms, and never speak on voice chat. the stalwart feels lacking because it needs other people with different weapons to support it. meanwhile, you could just settle for a quasar cannon and some sort of automatic weapon (like sickle or defender), and be able to deal with chaff AND elite enemies relatively well while not needing teammates to help you for any enemy above a spewer / brood commander...

    Instead of another machine gun they shoulda made this a mini gun that didnt need to reload. Just give us like 1000 rounds on a backpack to let us mow down everything like Mac from Predator

      I think a better way is to eliminate the need to reload machine guns if your carrying a supply pack. This way you get the same effect with all 3 machine guns if desired.

      That's a neat idea. A 1000round minigun that can't reload. But with shorter cooldown than 480seconds. Like a gun from the mech, but one you can carry. Comes with all the downsides you'd expect from a human carrying a mech gun. High recoil, slower movement, but high damage and/or heavy penetration.

      Thye have looked into it, part of the dev teams design philosophy is realistic gun Balistics, a Mini gun like that would have insane recoil if carried which is why they are on the fence about it, like 2-3x as much as the HMG does now while crouched

      Realistic? I don't think so most militaries don't send they're troops with weapons the most can't handle or only work in very specific or "chef's kiss" perfect scenarios. They make weapons to deal with the threat in the environment and situations that enemy creates and counter act as much as possible. Not create a HMG the can't kill or can't be wielded or a cannon the has a super long time to fire with advance mechanics or ergonomics to counter act that. The devs are not thanking at all in terms of realism.

    The Quasar canon is a great gun. When I was using it yesterday, I was surprised how good it is. Watch they nerf this gun. However, this heavy machine gun is lackluster just like many of these guns in this game.

      Quasar is how most guns should feel imo. It’s balanced, leaning slightly in favor of the divers. Feels amazing.

      Balanced? If you're not fast you are dead. If you have a great group OK cool. Most Don't have bost both are super slow quasar is doable HMG unusable. The HMG is where the Jar 5 Dominator should be.

    The HMG needs a touch lower recoil and a major upgrade to the magazine like at least 50 rounds

    I really hope the fact the HMG has no third-person reticle is a bug. It already struggled immensely against bots from my time with it, and having to snap my entire view to first person just to hit shots consistently butchered it further.

      The HMG should have be heavy armour penetration, because it takes way too many bullets to drop automatons

      Its not a bug dude. Notice how Anti-Material rifle doesn't have one either. It's because these weapons are not the type to be hip fired.

      I guarantee it's not a bug because the leaked vids showed this exact same problem. In my opinion, it was a severely poor choice to remove the reticle. I hope the HMG gets trashed enough that the devs fixes it's problems. For now, I'm still loving it and just eyeballing my shots. It shreds bot armor.

      ​@jimmythornseed8605 but yet, we can hipfire it. It's literally just a poor game mechanic choice. A sniper is different. That's making players use the scope and treat it as a sniper and not a COD style quick shot.
      When I shoot the HMG in third person, it's just as accurate as the standard machine gun. The only thing missing is the reticle.

    The Quasar is great for anti armour when running with randoms. When running in a premade nothing beats the RR when you have someone that can quickly reload you. 3 or 4 drop ships at the same time? 2 Chargers with a Titan running at you? RR takes care of both scenarios in 6 seconds with a team member by your side. Which I think is great as it opens up more strategies around team play if that is your thing. I love the space the Quasar sits in now. A great addition to the arsenal.

    As someone who runs the recoiless rifle often this is a god send. 8 seconds is the amount of time it takes to reload my recoiless rifle while stationary. I can’t wait to try it.

      The charge time before firing is a major problem for me. Infinite ammo, no backpack slot taken up, and a "reload" that allows you to move and shoot during that reload might more than makeup for the charge time. What was the point of nerfing the rail gun if this was coming next? It was also pointed out that dropping a second Quasar at extraction or large stationary fight allows cycle firing them--negating the cool cooldown time almost entirely.

    The heavy machine gun needs to be able to penetrate heavy armor for it to be good.

      Yes, whole heartily agree! To make up for its cons it should let you pierce heavy armor for mid range combat.

    The biggest hint for the HMG is the no reticule. That just explains to everyone that it’s a 100% support weapon and that you need to crouch or prone to use it while taking out enemies from the back behind your friends. It’s accurate at low rate of fire and a beast at close range with its highest rate of fire. Requires high discipline and skill.
    The quasar is good, infinite ammo is helpful. But I’d rather take eat or recoilless because the faster you can kill an enemy, the better. The faster you can shoot out of cover, the better. Quasar can do the same but you have to charge from cover then peek out just on time for it to fire.

      But then you'd only have two recoilless and have to wait extremely long to call in another the Quasar trumps them.

      @@nicksjacku9750yeah, you get VASTLY more shots per minute with the quasar cannon compared to the eat and recoilless. plus, this comes without the guilt of wasting ammo, which means you can use the quasar on bug holes and bot fabricators without being wasteful.

    From my experience, the HMG is strong, IF you know what it can kill, and if you run the supply pack for the additional ammo. The shots have borderline heavy armor penetration, being able to punch through scout striders, hulks, and even tanks. The only things I've seen it fail to penetrate were Chargers, Devastator shields, and the AA tanks (havent tested it on Bile Titans, but i suspect it will have similar results to the Charger). I do agree that the combination of the small 75 round mag and the long reload holds it back, but we'll see if the devs make any changes regarding those. If they sped up the reload speed even a little, that would make a world of difference.

      @@LegacyGamingUS Haha, yeah, gotta agree there. DMRs needing more punch, odd ammo limits on some guns, and the list goes on. Not always enough to truly hold a gun back from being at all usable, but just some tweaks would make them all shine in their own ways. If it says anything, I actually run the Punisher Plasma on the bot front with excellent results. However, I'm used to running the grenade launcher, so reflexively accounting for shot arcs is second nature for my style.
      And thanks, I've been watching the videos as they come out, but haven't always had a comment on them worth mentioning, hahaha.

    The Quasar Cannon ist fookin BUSTED against Dropships... one Shot on the Turbines and boom... extremly fun to play ngl.

      Normal rockets also do the same without the 2 seconds chargin animation. The best part of the Quasar is not needing a reloader in exchange of more waiting time between shots

    something worth mentioning wiht he MG: it does pierce medium armor, whuch does open quite a few ways of using it. But that also means as a esult that it competes with the autocannon, and that gun does basically everything better besides knife-range shooting (especially as the MG needs a supply backpack if you wan to use it extensively.
    Also I find it performs best when toning down its fire rate as much as possible: helps with both recoil and ammo economy

    They could express the HMG difficulty at handling it by only showing the reticle when crouching or prone. Even more, they could increase the ammo count and just add an overheat mechanic that jams the gun or even damages you if you are just going crazy with the gun. This way the reticle forces you to play as intended by holding a position and you need to use the high damage of the HMG carefully since it could overheat.

    it was a missed opportunity to not have the heavy machinegun come with a backpack of ammo, especially since we have seen leaks of a 6slot ammo only backpack stratagem.

    I actually quite like the new machine gun but you’re absolutely right about the ammo count, they need to at least double it or even more than that. Found it useful against bots in particular due to the armour penetration working on everything except hulks and tanks. Well I assume it doesn’t work those two anyway, I didn’t even try 😅

    i love the LAS-99, its basically a recoilless without the stationary reload (and using other weapons while it recharges) and it doesnt use up a backpack slot, its just so strong, the only thing the recoilless rifle has over this is depending on the planet a faster or equal reload time, but it just cant be beat by being able to evade enemies/fight back while reloading

    I'm glad you said the same thing I did about the heavy machine gun. It's gonna turn off players just from the fact that it doesn't have a reticle for 3rd person. Many players like myself, enjoy playing in 3rd person. I don't like to be forced to go into 1st person just to use a weapon. Though this is not forced, it immediately hampers you because of that lacking reticle. I still use it and eyeball my shots with it. It's truly a hard-hitting HMG against armor. Especially bots.
    But it needs a reticle. That missing makes no sense.

    I feel like just give the hmg 3 mags and a 200 mag size and then we got something. Till a buff of sorts ill just stick with the normal machine gun

    Got lucky with a bug mission, where I could see a spore spewer, a strikers nest and an illegal broadcaster tower from basically where I landed, took one shot for the tower and the spewer and two for each of the nest, not even 10 minutes in and we had 3 side missions done, OP ngl

    I actually think the design of the HMG is mostly on point it's the implementation where the problems are. I was using it in 1200 RPM mode last night as that felt like more bullets were landing in a smaller area while burst firing. I was running with the supply pack so ammo wasn't really a problem, but it needs to really have 3 mags instead of 2. The biggest problem though is that most of the time the bullets are landing below the dot which adds an extra step that is very frustrating when you're trying to react quickly.

    I change I would love to see to the Quasar Cannon is the ability to charge it in cover then the charge slowly bleeds off so you have a few seconds to run out and fire it with no warm up but could lose about 10% 20% 30% of your damage for not firing it straight away. Even if it goes all the way down to a 50% damage being able to detach the charge time and the aim time would be huge utility. maybe it could hold 50% charge without loss so you could always have the weapon half charged.

    I have 170 hours of mission time, I use the machine gun for 1/3 of my games and it covers the wave clearer roll very well. The new heavy machine gun doesn't do better in that role nor does it fit into another category, it is a downgrade.

      Why would you use a slow firing heavy machine gun made to kill armored targets as a run and gun MG? What on earth? Why would a heavy MG be a wave clearing tool? If you really had 170 hours you'd know better than to make that comparison.

    For me the HMG's biggest issue is the recoil. If they want to keep the mag small then they should reduce recoil significantly - especially when prone as i didnt noticed any difference when standing/crouching/prone.

    With the addition of the Quaser cannon, it makes me have to decide for bug runs if I want to run a crowd control mob kill role with the Arc thrower or if I want to be the AT demolition guy with the Quaser cannon. The HMG is just a massive letdown.

    heavy machine gun is best used at a distance agaisnt incoming patrols and ambushes
    stalwart - easiest to handle/reccomended for all around use
    (i dont remember the other two names)
    machine gun - managable but still heavy to swing around, its this point where i say use distance agaisnt the enemy
    heavy machine gun - plan a trap, use some loud noises and wait, good luck trying to use this up close

    Love the new Quasar. Add in a Jetpack and bugs are pretty screwed! Not even chargers can close on me and I don’t have to reload and make sure I don’t climb the EAT box!

    The mg is done correctly, they are big bulky squad operated weapons. Its reasonable to believe a person cant carry the weight of the gun and a whole ton of heavy ammo. Its more like an emplacement weapon that requires positioning to use properly

    They should've went full out on the HMG 101 as a Heavy caliber belt fed by a ammo backpack or magazines that way it could be a powerhouse that is hard to control, also for the love of god give it lasers at least

    I like the new Heavy Machine Gun, I think people are expecting to use it on crowds like a more powerful machine gun which isn't quite right - I found it best at highest firing rate and using it in short bursts from prone, shreds the medium targets very quickly. I'd give it a bit more ammo though, or maybe a belt fed ammo backpack like a lot have suggested.

      I think arrowhead also dropped the ball on this with the example video they sgiw ehn going to buy the weapon, they show it being used against smaller enemies and in continuous fire, instead of showing a helldiver in prone against medium armored targets using bursts.
      But yes, for it's intended case and using good positioning this is great for medium bots.

    HMG I feel is good in the armor penetration, I think it needs the recoil reduced a bit, even when prone and using recoil reducing armor, it's only controllable on the lowest fire rate.
    The regular MG only does partial damage to some medium, HMG does full damage to all medium and some heavy, the scout strider pilot shield is oddly enough considered 'heavy' armor by the game, and the HMG can destroy it, faster than the Autocannon even. But that recoil is worse than even the Autocannon's.

    I think they schould just rework the medium and heavy machine gun to be belt fed trough a backpack so you dont need to reload and keep up supressive fire the thing a maschine gun is build for. Reloading everytime after shooting for 5 seconds makes it not much better than a primary in my opinion. And while were at it pls just add the stallwart as a primary weapon it already hangs on the wall together with the other primary weapons but its still a support weapon.

    Yes the hmg has kinda low ammo cap but its absolutely amazing. I refuse to run anything else because i dont need to run anything else. Just dont waste your shots or rely on shield generators or guard dogs

    I love the new MG, def needs more ammo and a little more armor pen tho, rn its the same lvl of pen as the HMG emplacement and the AT Sniper tho

    Wrong, the HMG is extremely effective against enemies like devastators, switch it to 1200 rpm and tap fire at distances, and then aim low on center-mass in close ranges and watch them be erased. The HMG has made my time grinding in solos a breeze. Just gotta adapt and use it right

      I also wanna mention that in proper warfare you NEVER wanna spray and pray with a machine gun, controlled bursts are where it’s at, and that translates to the guns in this game quite nicely, including the mentioned HMG

      Switched it to 450 RPM, managed to kill everything but the targets I originally want to kill with the 3rd weapon.
      It's an overall "good" trash killer but the LMG is just better at that with more ammo so... yeah, that still is bad regarding the other options.

      I believe this post is correct. This is a true support machine gun. This is not a main weapon replacement. Switching it to the highest RPM allows you to pull it out and dispatch what you need to as fast as you can. You can just give it a few quick taps on the trigger and put it back. Have your primary deal with trash this thing thrives on ripping through devastator, glowing weak points, and instantly deleting stalkers. It's mostly a devastator destroyer so why be labor the point delete them and move on.

      @@wolfsbane501st3 The problem with that however is that Helldivers is a hordeshooter, you don't have the luxury of carefully setting up a position like in a typical battlefield, here mobility is key and this weapon completely lacks mobility which's why no one likes it. Well, on top of it's terrible magazine capacity.

    The quasar is good, but the slow fire rate, which obviously balances it out, is rough when doing bots. The recoiless with a friend puts out so much damage in a short amount of time its hard to not use it. But solo? Quasar is good.
    The HMG shreds but needs at least 4 mags of 100 or leave it at 2 with 150-200

    I don’t get the people thinking they are going to nerf the quasar. If anything it could use a buff to the charge time. A team mate ran EAT and was consistently taking out targets before I could get my shot off.
    Rarely are there enough targets and frequently enough to have infinite ammo matter especially with 10 sec between shots on the quasar. That’s doesn’t even account for missed shots or missed weak points which is easier with a charge style weapon

    I think the HMG would genuinely be pretty good if they increased the mag capacity, 75 rouns is ridiculous, imagine having it on the max RPM!

    Quasar looks neat, it's just too bad that a bunch of other weapons are going to become invalidated because of it. Too bad about the new MG as well. I was really hoping for a nice heavy spray and pray option. Does crouching or laying down make the new MG recoil more manageable?

    The heavy MG has everything stacked against it, a depressing clip size, horrific accuracy when not prone, and a missing third person reticle that has to be a bug.

    Quasar cannon is definitely the best support weapon, and It feels great to use. My first thought after using it was that the devs are definitely going to ruin it somehow.
    MG101 has no ammo, is useless for close quarters combat yet has terrible recoil so it's useless for long range combat as well. It's only ok at mid range. Definitely poorly designed. Needs more ammo, less recoil, and a hipfire reticle.

    So I really figured out the MG-101 last night. What its REALLY good at is trivializing devastators and Brood Commanders, and easily dispatching Scout Striders and Spewers.
    Wanna drop a Heavy Devastator in the most satisfying way possible? Left leg it. 1 mouse click burst at 750 rpm.

      Regular MG did all that with less downsides. The lack of 3rd person reticle also just feels bad. Especially with how far off the bullets land from the sight.

    I sense the Quasar cannon could be NERFED with a cool down after certain number of shots. What could be a fun/frustrating way to reload or cool off a weapon would be to do a mini directional puzzle 😂

    Hmg is just a joke. Smaller mag. Higher recoil and longer reload then the MG. No point using it. If it could deal with heavy armour it might be viable but right now its pointless.

    I do think the HMG is good, as for the rounds it has fewer because they are bigger rounds than normal ones, remember that the weapon designers make the guns work and feel somewhat true to our reality. That gun is meant to spray your targets up close due to the sheer amount of power. But that is not to say it can't be better like more recharge Mags 2 is not much.

      I have no problem with it, I just keep it on a low fire rate and fire from the prone when I’m in a decent position. I see people moaning that there’s too much recoil and I’m thinking you’re trying to shoulder fire a 30kg HMG at 1200rpm… no shit.

    Quasar seems balanced until 2 or more helldivers have them… any difficulty 7+ becomes trivial. Ive run strats with friends using EATS and RR, the quasar made it so much easier. Shrieker nest on the other side of the map? Pew pew, gone. Bile titans quiver in fear at the quasar, most could barely stand up before 2-3 laser balls to the face. Its very fun but 2 missions in a row on suicide with only 1 dead helldiver… Hmmmmmm.

      You could literally do the same thing with multiple people running RR or EAT. If two people run RR they can take down 6 titans in under 20seconds with team reload.
      Two people running EATs can kill 2 titans per minute.
      Quasar is just an alternative not an upgrade

    The Heavy Machine gun in its current state is a disappointment. I would have loved to see them make two possible changes to this weapon.
    1. Have it with deploy with a backpack that operates as a single huge magazine. Imagine having 300 to 500 rounds that you didn’t have to reload. With how bad the recoil is it would have really made this weapon stand out as an improvement over the basic machine gun and the stalwart.
    2. Let it have one or two team actions. Imagine asking a teammate for help reloading the weapon and it being done quickly and/or a feature where a teammate can help stabilize the gun when firing similar to what we are seeing with the recoilless rifle and the auto cannon.
    It simply isn’t different enough from the other machine guns to make it seem nearly as special as the quasar cannon. That said I am super happy that they were added to the game.

    Im getting real tired of this HMG slander. Its only real downside is the magazine size. But that things FUCKS when it comes to bots. It kills Hulks and Tanks SO FAST. Idk i personally love it. My only actual issue is the magazine size.

    Don't get me wrong, an anti-tank weapon with unlimited ammo and no backpack is amazing but y'all are overestimating the Quasar Cannon big time. The thing doesn't one-shot almost anything and shoots once every blue moon. After trying it against bots I find it very hard to consider it a go-to choice, the time it takes to simply just fire makes it a challenge to even put down a Devastator.

    should have gave the mg 100 bullets slow fire rate so its not good against swarm and very hard hitting able to kill chargers and bile titans now its just the same as other mgs

    The quasar cannon is pretty overrated imo, especially against bots. The chargeup time make it much harder to line up a clear shot without getting flanked or staggered and the long cooldown means you can’t pick off multiple hills in a tense fight or use it against devastators. Especially since all the bot missions right now have the godawful stratagem modifiers like longer cooldowns, ion storms, or less slots, you’re better off bringing EATS so when you inevitably get one-tapped by some bot ordinance you aren’t stuck either wasting a slot for half the mission or running into a hot zone and dying again trying to get back your guns (although this is a problem with modifiers in general, I hate them and if we get bot missions without them it will become better). It’s definitely good against bugs as it’s able to kill an infinite number of chargers, but then there are lots of good builds for bugs and this doesn’t really stand out.

    Seems like a sloppy take on the machine gun. I think the tripod at the end is a hint that like many real LMGs, this is supposed to be used with that support crouched or prone.

    the medium & heavy MG's basicly make the ammopack essential, so it takes 2 slots to rock the mg effectively... and you sure as hell aint giving that ammo to your team, pretty big loss of utility tbh, and the sights only is awful why they gotta make so many of their weapons absolutely painful to use

      This is because the weapon is relatively well balanced, it has its use case which comes with a certain play style, people who can't adapt to it call it crap. I wouldn't call the new Quasar OP or meta, just another well thought out support tool, nothing more, nothing less.
      But headlines like that don't click so well.

      It does good damage, especially against automatons but it's extremely unwieldy, has a pathetic magazine capacity and only has a max of 2 reserve magazines and has a painfully slow reload. Basically the gun can be good for the whole 4 seconds it can fire and afterwards you have to wait until after the engagement to reload it because of how slow it is.

      You can kill a hulk with the HMG in 2 seconds of sustain fire to the face. The weapon feels amazing to me. Also the bullet is a large bullet Of course it's going to be hard to fit a lot in there. I Imagine in this timeline the HMG just shoots 50 caliber rounds

      It is also easier to use close range since no charge time means instant shot when loaded.

    can someone please tell me if this game is just being in very wide open areas shooting everything that moves, or is there variety in gameplay? if i look for gameplay, that "open place shoot everything" gameplay is all i see making me believe, if i complete the first mission i know all there is going to be and be bored by the game after

      It's a significant part of the game, yes. However, there are are benefits to playing sneaky too. I like to use the jump jet to get a great vantage point and snipe heavy targets while the rest are on the ground mowing down the general mass of enemies.

      there is certainly more gameplay than just shooting everything, at least for most missions, but it's only really at high difficulty; lower diff. you can get away with just shooting everything and completing the objective, but higher diff. there are either too many enemies to feasibly stand your ground and ammo conservation becomes a problem ( bugs ) or too many bullets and rockets flying around to just sit around in the open ( bots, my preference ). Also, aside from one mission type, there are objectives you need to complete. that first mission you beat will probably give you that feel of 'open space shoot everything' but the harder the difficulty the less that applies.
