Bless you! X 3 :) Lovely lovely shots of the moving water/tree branches compositions. There are times your video setup is what I think you will be shooting. Some beautiful videography.
I missed this when it came out, but it might have been because I was in Scotland. Gorgeous image Simon and I hope it was worth the torture for you. You’re videos are always brilliant and I really look forward to them coming out, this one though takes it up a notch purely because of all the effort and challenges you involved. Thank you very much, it is genuinely appreciated. Now to part two...
Hope you enjoyed Scotland Mark, I thoroughly enjoyed myself! I messaged you earlier in the week...checking up on you :-) Thanks as always for your support.
Simon Booth Sorry Simon I missed your message, I’ve ordered quite a bit of stuff off Amazon lately and I’m getting deluged with emails so I might have deleted it by mistake. My most sincere apologies.
Beautiful image Simon, really clever composition, I loved it. As you said the extra interested that the tree provides elevates it to another level. Damn those pesky midges, you had me itching all the way through!
Simon Booth I’m guessing you had a midge net somewhere, but just did not use it for the video... loved the video. Why would you not use a hood for the Lense? I’m a newb and picking up tips from you guys.
Brian Brooking Hi Brian Yes I do have a midge net but had left it at the house for my sins. One of the main reasons I didn’t use a lens hood was that mine is a little worn now and keeps falling off! That being said, the sun wasn’t an issue anyway. Had It been casting light on the glass, I would have used my hand to shield it!
Cracking to see Mull on a photography vlog and great work, especially the waterfall. I currently live here on Mull and thinking about extending my time here, the main reason for coming in the first place was to practice landscape photography which I am slowly learning. Mull, if you get the conditions right can be a fantastic location and although we had an amazing summer the bad weather has been here with a vengeance so I've found myself learning more about woodland photography so far..! Here's to a winter on Mull, I hope I can get some images anywhere near your standard.
An interesting one Mike. Moving to a place just for the photography! Not many of us get to do that so I am very envious indeed. good luck in your searches. I never ventured into the woodlands of Mull, but I'm sure the lichen encrusted oak and birch woodland will produce hours of fun for you.
@@SimonBoothPhotography you don't have to go far here for that. It's a good place to continue teaching myself that's for sure, although I missed a surprise spectacular sunset last night, so instead of rushing about to get the camera I just sat back, opened a beer and enjoyed the views.
Hello Simon, I remember a few years back, coming to Mull and renting a house at Dervaig with a very good restaurant, close by. We carried out exploratory walks with binoculars at hand to observe the Sea and Golden Eagles and those low flying owls. The west of Mull has magnificent drives and panoramic views for landscape photography. Whilst the north coast of Iona has a rugged beauty with corncrakes in attendance. As always thank you, for sharing your experiences. A midge net hood is a must for Scotland. They do not only bite you but, give you bloody good kicking lol
Hi Allen. I stayed at Dervaig two years ago but found that part of Mull more difficult for landscapes. There is another Mull film to come but then two more from Iona. I stayed on the Island for a week It's my third time there. I saw a juvenile corncrake this time but all the adults had left, but I do have shot of them for previous visits earlier in the season.
Simon, I think I would add a midge head net to my camera bag or at least a spray can of DEET containing repellent. That is an exquisite photograph of the water fall. You really worked hard for that picture!
Thanks for the compliment Bill. I'm not a big fan of DEET, I think the chemicals in it are far worse than the midge bites. As for that midge net...I had one back at the house :-D
My Simon Booth withdrawl comes to an end, finally another masterpiece to start my weekend. So relaxing to learn in a way no one else can present, for that Simon thank you. We here in Florida have no-seeums which give us fits at certain times so stick with it. Beautiful images.
Thanks so much David. Three more films are in the bag from this trip, so hopefully not too long to wait for the next one. I do think the image on this film was one of those once in a while shots, so I hope the next films are not too much of a disappointment.
It made me laugh too when I watched the footage back, so you're not alone. Perhaps Adam has subliminally affected my thinking. I do watch and enjoy his stuff!
I'm just catching up with your work by watching the videos in consecutive order. I've been to Mull a couple of times now, and I'm due to go again this coming October. The reason for going has been to celebrate the 1945 Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger film "I Know Where I'm Going" and I noticed that you were shooting near a couple of the locations that appeared in the film, namely the steep road down to Carsaig (and the phone box next to the waterfall), and the old bridge over the River Coladoir at the top end of Loch Beg. A classic film in glowing black and white.
I do wonder if the films get better as they progress. I''m hoping so. I must keep a look out for that film, thanks. And thanks for watching the back catalogue too.
Wonderful, Simon. We have swarms of biting insects here in northern New Engalnd, too, and the only thing that works absolutely is to wrap yourself in aluminum foil. Socially awkward and and can be sweaty, but it keeps insanity at bay. Leaving the sneezes in at the end was pure cinematic genius.
Beautiful image Simon - 3 branches with contrasting green foliage with the slow cascade of water behind - well worth every midge bite in my opinion. Well done for your perseverance lol
Fantastic image Simon. I really enjoyed the vlog. Great to see a photographer simply taking photos as opposed to the endless stream of 'how to, when to, should do, shouldn't do ' vlogs. Right, another coffee and your next vlog. Relaxing Saturday 😀
Thanks Kevin for your comment. It takes some doing to create a vlog without any of hose elements in it. I think some of mine have included the odd bacon butty though! The story telling is sometimes the part people enjoy the most so good mix should keep everyone happy!
Nice shot Simon, that is keen, putting up with the midges, {I new an old lady who................) hope you didn't swallow the spider, lol, thanks for sharing. All the best............Peter.
Great photographs. That tripod looks like a mighty beast to walk about with, never mind the lens and camera! Try Avon Skin So Soft for the midges and a face netting :-D
Hi Terrence, thank you for you comment. I will look at the Avon product next year as a few have since mentioned it. As for the head net, I have one but when you wear glasses as I do for close up wok, they steam up with a net on.
A wonderful image Simon love the soft blue grey curtain behind the branches, sorry you had to endure the dreaded midge I swear by a bucket of deet though others tell me Avon skin so soft does the trick in a more pleasant and efficient manner!
Hi Simon. Another great location, vlog and music. Composition of waterfall shot fantastic. But I would have edited out the sneezing. This was only distraction to it all. Otherwise, hope to see more of your great work. Cheers Euge
Hello Euge Thanks for your compliment on the film. With regards to the one negative, most found my suffering and sneezing entertaining, as did I when I watched it back. this is why I left it in! Sorry if it detracted from the final image for you. Take care.
@@SimonBoothPhotography if that is the case, no need for apology. Your vlogs so you decide how to create them. Look forward to more of your great work. Drone captures were terrific too. Take care. Euge
Thanks for sharing Mull with us all :D Those Scottish midge just love to hang out in damp still places I am itching just watching you get eaten!!!! We have owned a Tilley hat for more than 15yrs now and they are still as good as when I first bought them . I loved that photograph with the tree in front of the waterfall it was worth getting eaten for :D Teddy
Ahhh Simon I felt for you getting that shot. We were there last June for a few days. I got eaten alive trying to get a sunset shot by the Salan boat wreaks. Stand still and they feast. Have sub'd as love your work and the informative presentation, be it photo or nature related.
Nice work Simon and great to see Mull in a vlog. (Nice to see Oban briefly - I grew up not far from Oban). Really liked the waterfall shot...really smart composition given some of the problems you identified when you got there. :-)
Thanks Juiian. One more to come and two from Iona. I don't think the images are as good as the one at the end of this film though. I was really pleased with this shot. It's what I envisaged from the bottom of the hill and miraculously, it's what it turned out to be.
Beautiful shot Simon and love the composition. I would have probably gone straight to the waterfall base and tried there without thinking of getting a shot that far back. Something that I will definitely think about next time I am near a waterfall. Midges are evil things, you even had me itching through the video.
Thanks Andy. I have seen images of other photographers and thought just the same, so you are not alone! It's frustrating because you convince yourself you cant see images! Best of luck!
My god that is not what I thought the image would be like wow oh wow that’s so nice. I am now going to look at waterfalls in a different way. I spent a week on the Isle of Mull last year maybe take a look at my Flickr and let me know what you think nothing as great as yours I know haha
Oh, Simon!! I'm watching your wonderful video and you're making me scratch!! Please...get some bug spray and keep it handy when you're shooting. I have an Avon product that I never leave home without it. Avon Expedition I think it's called. Works like a charm. Love the images you got!!
If that's what you have use it. I think the Expedition works better. It just doesn't smell as nice. It's a lot easier to get your work done without those nasty buggies. Take care.
Got to say that your discomfort makes for extra entertainment Simon! That’s a really unusual way of portraying a waterfall, I thought at first that the beautiful tree and the fall would compete against each other but in fact they work well together and the result is a lovely and original image :-)
Bless you! Tricky conditions Simon. I think bug repellant might be a good idea next time to prevent the flying teeth being such a nuisance. It was worth it though your image was beautiful. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it :-))
Fantastic image Simon. I sympathise with you on the midges having endured them on numerous ocassions. If im not using a midge hood due to my glasses steaming up I would advise you try Skin so soft by Avon. Keeps the blighters away better than any midge cream.
Exactly Jim. With the midge hood, you can't see a thing through your glasses. I have one and it's rubbish with glasses on! I will look into that cream though!
Beautiful shot and a very nice video. Midges are a real pain and I am far more comfortable looking stupid with a net on than fighting with the hateful swarms. Roll on next month when the wee blighters and most of the tourists will be gone and I can start exploring my native land again.
Really enjoyed the video Simon... really inspiring and sure many are inspired to go out and look for that killer image.. .. not so many midges it seems over here in Ireland !! Looking forward to the next one...... Andy - Cashel, Ireland
Goodness me that video made me laugh Simon. I’m clearly not a good person! Man v nature...you deserve an award. And just when I thought it was over the sneezing fit...🤣 But what a lovely final image, really love the composition and edit of it, superb. Thanks so much for making my morning 👍
Lovely vlog Simon. Ticks and midges are a right old bloody pest best time to come to anywhere in Scotland is October onwards. Think the same with the Lake District as well. :-)
Superb image Simon, which part of Mull was that? There is a nice cliff waterfall near Ballygown if you go back, straight of the top of the cliff with some nice sections up above as well by the road
Nailed it again.A insect face mask would help on days like you had.Thomas Heaton wears one when needed. It might look strange at first .But what's more important, your art or being eating? They are cheap and don't weigh anything.Love you work.
SO glad I caught your video Simon as I'm heading over to Mull tomorrow and had forgot about the dreaded midges. So Iv just ordered some nets and more midge repellent lol Great video and who knows might bump into you.
Yeah thats a pity but I hope you had a good time excluding the midges lol In the risk of sounding stupid, where was the location of the waterfall Simon?
Beautiful image Simon and nicely presented vlog. Good to hear your thoughts about how to tackle that waterfall shot. I’ve just been on Skye and my next vlog will highlight my struggle with midges on one particular shot I tried to get. You brought that horrible itchy feeling back to me watching that!
Fantastic image Simon but what a mission to get it! I get eaten alive wherever I go so will not be going there in a hurry! When was your visit? Anyway, the use of the waterfall as a backdrop to the trees is a great example of not going for the 'obvious' composition. Can't wait to see more of Mull, but not the midges please.
Simon get some "Smidge " midge repellent and a head net its got to be better than suffering the dreaded midge its what I did around Loch awe and Glen coe, great waterfall shot great composition , you covered your legs now cover your head but keep up the good work
Well that was well worth the wait Simon. Beautiful last shot, you worked that scene really well. How you did it in that swarm is just beyond me. A lot would have given up. Even the Tilly hat didn’t save the day😬 I reckon you should invest in one of those anti midge head nets! By the way, that’s the best thumbnail I’ve seen in a long time and well done for the Tom H end card I noticed as well 👍👍 I’m still waiting for one of those. Nice work Simon.
Thanks James. The thumbnail was a leap of faith, but it seams to have brought interest to the film after all. Midge nets...I have one and it makes my glasses steam up so can't see a thing. Avon skin so soft seams to be highly recommended...but god only knows what's in it!?!
Lovely image Simon. May I suggest that you invest in a midge hood, or better yet, a midge jacket. They may not be fashionable, but they are the only really effective way to combat the wee beggars! I live in the Highlands and wouldn’t be without my jacket.
I had the hat Trevor, back at the cottage :-D I used it last year though and found that it's difficult to see through and also my glasses and viewfinder keep steaming up with it on!
Simon, the midge jacket is better. The hood zips up so you can unzip it briefly to get the shot. I use mine all the time in the summer months when I’m out near water, I hate have the little blighters crawling in my ears, eyes and nose!! Lol
Thanks Martin. Pesky beggars. It felt even worse than it looked. If you look at the end where I am by the waterfall, the bridge of my nose had swollen up!
Fantastic video, Simon. Im new to your channel. Just subscribed. A headnet would be a nice addition to your gear... ;-) In two weeks I head up to the Glen Affric. Hope to find a nice waterfall like you do. Great image! Thanks, Rainer
Ooops...sorry for my late response. It's a Tilly Hat www.tilley.com/uk_en/?gclid=CjwKCAiApOvwBRBUEiwAcZGdGExdCBRYVnGJrwrbQhMB-78gAypsxlnbyTOcJL7HDw64LjP2pD2zXRoCwkwQAvD_BwE&gclid=CjwKCAiApOvwBRBUEiwAcZGdGExdCBRYVnGJrwrbQhMB-78gAypsxlnbyTOcJL7HDw64LjP2pD2zXRoCwkwQAvD_BwE
Wow. As the saying goes “once bitten” I’ve been caught bad with them flying effers too. I know now to carry deet or smidge on any trip I do incase. A net too! Loved the vid mate. Stunning location. Scotland has to be on my hit list very soon! Loved the image. Those greens! 👏🏻 what is the tripod and head your using? Looks amazing 😊👍🏻
Thanks Gareth for checking in and for your kind words. As for the bugs, I have head net but as a spectacle wearer, my glasses steam up under them. Absolutely useless! I'm not keen on chemicals for bugs either so just I tolerate them at my peril.
All my kit can be found in the info below the film but the tripod is a Gitzo GT4542LS Series 4 6X Systematic Carbon Tripod. The head is a uni-loc rotating ball head.
Man-O-man, that swarm of bugs was intimidating even watching the video. You got a great shot. I see it in IG earlier but really liked the video. I had a question though. We are always taught to turn off vibration reduction on a tripod because it can create problems with motion. Have you ever really found that to be true? I sometimes forget to check that but I have never seen any adverse impact unless I don't know what to look for. I shot some images earlier this week and forgot to turn it off but I can't see any issues. What would one notice if the VR was causing a problem from being inadvertently left on?
Hi Phillip, as far as I am aware, you only had to turn IS off on the first generation of lenses. At east this is true of Canon. I am told that the later generation lenses can detect a stable environment and allow for it. On my old 100-400, a shot viewed at 100% is softer by comparison.
What a gorgeous image, Simon! Really beautiful. You did a great job in composing, capturing and processing it. I guess a result like that helps you forget about the discomfort of the midges. Is there no bug repellent that you can apply to exposed skin? Or is being consumed by midges a badge of courage proudly worn by Brit photographers? (I ask that with a big smile on my face.)
Thanks for your complimentary comment Patrick. There is a range of insect sprays on the market but I don't like using them as most, if not all, are not kind to the environment. And, I would never remember to put it on in the morning...a bit like me and suncream!
Stunning image! That's the difference between a pro and a beginner. Thanks for the great video. PS...next time at least pull your jacket's hood over to protect your ears! :)
13:45 "I've definitely swallowed a midge... That's really quite nice..." LOL - Awesome video sir. Thanks for the sacrifice!
You are very welcome Quintin. No to be recommended!
my gf cracked up at that too

Much appreciated.
loved watching the second part :D
thanks for sharing this with us
really enjoyed watching this
gorgeous stuff!
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it as much as I did making it!
My god that is not what I thought the image would be like wow oh wow that’s so nice. I am now going to look at waterfalls in a different way. I spent a week on the Isle of Mull last year maybe take a look at my Flickr and let me know what you think nothing as great as yours I know haha
Thanks very much Paul. I will check out your page for sure.
Oh, Simon!! I'm watching your wonderful video and you're making me scratch!! Please...get some bug spray and keep it handy when you're shooting. I have an Avon product that I never leave home without it. Avon Expedition I think it's called. Works like a charm. Love the images you got!!
Thanks Sharon. Avon Skin so Soft has been recommended too. Maybe it's the same in a different bottle?
If that's what you have use it. I think the Expedition works better. It just doesn't smell as nice. It's a lot easier to get your work done without those nasty buggies. Take care.
Got to say that your discomfort makes for extra entertainment Simon! That’s a really unusual way of portraying a waterfall, I thought at first that the beautiful tree and the fall would compete against each other but in fact they work well together and the result is a lovely and original image :-)
Hi David. If that's what it takes, then I am up for it! Glad the image pleased you in the end.
A beautiful shot that has really inspired me🙂 I am in awe of your war with the midges and the ticks ugh!
I'd like to say that I find images like this every week, but that would just take the fun out of it!
Bless you! Tricky conditions Simon. I think bug repellant might be a good idea next time to prevent the flying teeth being such a nuisance. It was worth it though your image was beautiful. Thanks for the video, really enjoyed it :-))
Thanks Elaine. Worth every bite, even though my head did swell up back at the cottage!
Owch! Made me itch just watching
Looking forward to your next one as I’ve missed ya 👍. I have a midge head net, a wise investment from eBay or amazon.
I have one too Kevin, it was in the car but my specs steam up with it on! Thanks for your kind comment.
Thanks Simon. I have a net but my specs steam up! That shot will look good in autumn too!
Really enjoyed the video Simon... really inspiring and sure many are inspired to go out and look for that killer image.. .. not so many midges it seems over here in Ireland !! Looking forward to the next one...... Andy - Cashel, Ireland
Cheers Andy and sorry for being so slow with my reply. I very much appreciate your comment.
Goodness me that video made me laugh Simon. I’m clearly not a good person! Man v nature...you deserve an award. And just when I thought it was over the sneezing fit...🤣 But what a lovely final image, really love the composition and edit of it, superb. Thanks so much for making my morning 👍
Thanks Simon, I laughed too when I originally watched the clips back. Knowing it made your morning made mine...cheers!
Lovely vlog Simon. Ticks and midges are a right old bloody pest best time to come to anywhere in Scotland is October onwards. Think the same with the Lake District as well. :-)
Yes Jim, and that image would also look great with autumn colour.
Simon, if you don’t like DEET, the repellent sprays with Picardin are equally effective.
Thank you but i am likely to forget and suffer again :-)
A difficult photo shoot fir sure. I don’t knows how you stand the midges. Beautiful image of tree and falls. I think that was a great success.
Thanks Glen, sorry I have been slow on your comment but it's always appreciated!
Lovely image! You suffered for your art - but it was worth it, judging by that picture and this vlog.
Worth every minute for me. Thank you for checking in again.
Superb image Simon, which part of Mull was that? There is a nice cliff waterfall near Ballygown if you go back, straight of the top of the cliff with some nice sections up above as well by the road
The fall is in the southern part of Mull on road from Carsaig to Pennyghael. Thanks for the ocation tip.
Nailed it again.A insect face mask would help on days like you had.Thomas Heaton wears one when needed. It might look strange at first .But what's more important, your art or being eating? They are cheap and don't weigh anything.Love you work.
I had one at the house Mark :-)
beautiful photo
Thank you Andrzej
Well done. That great photograph was worth it, I'm sure! Some bug spray might help, and failing that, a bottle of water to wash them down. :-)
Bottle of water all day long! Say no to chemical sprays!
SO glad I caught your video Simon as I'm heading over to Mull tomorrow and had forgot about the dreaded midges. So Iv just ordered some nets and more midge repellent lol Great video and who knows might bump into you.
Shame John, I'm back home now but it would have been good none the less. Have fun on Mull. The waterfall location is in the blurb below.
Yeah thats a pity but I hope you had a good time excluding the midges lol In the risk of sounding stupid, where was the location of the waterfall Simon?
The waterfall lies on the road from Carsaig to Pennyghael. It will look good in autumn!
Thanks Simon, I'll be sure to check it out.
Thanks Craig, I will look out for it.
Hi Steve, I got back last Saturday, the 1st September. There's another Mull film to come and two from the neighbouring island of Iona.
Cannot wait! We have a trip to Knoydart in 2019 and I am pondering on where else to visit on the trip.
Lovely image
Simon get some "Smidge " midge repellent and a head net its got to be better than suffering the dreaded midge its what I did around Loch awe and Glen coe, great waterfall shot great composition , you covered your legs now cover your head but keep up the good work
I have all those Michael, but left them at the house. I'm not keen on the repellents though!
Lol
I will look into that for next time. I'm back home now putting the other films together, but no more midges thanks goodness!
They always apear on windstill wether. Hope the rest of the week there wil be some wind. Those midges can drive you med.
I'm back now Paul but can report, there was nothing like that again for the rest of my time there. Three more films to come.
Love that image Simon. I've seen a few vlogs where people have to contend with the midges, but none were as challenging as you had.
Thanks Martin. Pesky beggars. It felt even worse than it looked. If you look at the end where I am by the waterfall, the bridge of my nose had swollen up!
Fantastic video, Simon. Im new to your channel. Just subscribed. A headnet would be a nice addition to your gear... ;-)
In two weeks I head up to the Glen Affric. Hope to find a nice waterfall like you do. Great image!
Thanks,
Rainer
Good luck in Glen Affric Rainer, it's beautiful up there! Thanks for watching and better still, subscribing!
Do you have a link on where to buy a hat like that, looks great.
Ooops...sorry for my late response. It's a Tilly Hat www.tilley.com/uk_en/?gclid=CjwKCAiApOvwBRBUEiwAcZGdGExdCBRYVnGJrwrbQhMB-78gAypsxlnbyTOcJL7HDw64LjP2pD2zXRoCwkwQAvD_BwE&gclid=CjwKCAiApOvwBRBUEiwAcZGdGExdCBRYVnGJrwrbQhMB-78gAypsxlnbyTOcJL7HDw64LjP2pD2zXRoCwkwQAvD_BwE
The struggle is real! I bought a mosquito net that just covers my head for when the bugs are epic & I'm standing around waiting for light.
Yes, mine was at the house!
stepped up massivley on production this is like a little movie well done
Thanks Mark. That's quite a compliment! Not bad considering that I don't do any script or story boards! Perhaps I should?
script is just fancy planning lol i ve started vlogs but find i am to rushed or my photgraphy suffers due to me not being able to multi task lol
It is a problem that one. Get the technical photography skills mastered first, so you only have to think about composition and filming.
yes i think get the shot then do the chat lol i live in warton its opposite longton marsh
Fancy that, give me a nudge if you see me!
Between ticks and midges how did we ever adopt the kilt as national dress?
Clearly made of tougher stuff back then!! :-)
Incredible image Simon - looks like you paid the price to get it -- but isn't that what it is all about?? As they say -- no pain no gain!! :-)
Too true Gary...sorry for my late response.
Nice film and those pesky midges can be a real pain.
You can't believe that something so small could be quite so troublesome!
Cool video
Oh no, bugs … awesome water fall … beautiful image . bad bugs … :-((
Thank you for commenting here.
Thank you for commenting here.
On my old 100-400, a shot viewed at 100% is softer by comparison.
well done
Great name you have there! I ate several during my time there!
Love the shot pity about the 'biters' Simon 😱
Yuk!
Wow, great photo. I don't know you were able to concentrate with that swarm of midges attacking you!
The footage was actually easier to film because I didn't have the time to overthink what I wanted to say! Thank you Larry.
Stunning image! That's the difference between a pro and a beginner. Thanks for the great video. PS...next time at least pull your jacket's hood over to protect your ears! :)
Thank you so much for a very nice comment indeed. I'm not a pro though, just an obsessed amateur who likes to suffer for his art! :-)
