My experience with 'self remembering': After 33 years of practice, in 2009, I awoke to find I had been practicing in my sleep. (Self inquiry is not like meditating twice per day. If it is not utterly consuming/you utterly consuming it, you're not doing it right.) To care about worldly matters is to forget that Self is administering the curriculum.
Guru Ramana's ascetic lifestyle was the natural result of realizing the Self, and that means his asceticism was not a discipline because being the result of his enlightenment it had no goal. That's the difference between Ramana and other monks, they're suppressing desires for a reward, Ramana just lost his.

He had to be a very very old soul, one who has done it all and found it lacking

Guru Ramana once said " all HIs Sadhana was done in previous lives", he too went through practicing ascetism.
