EJs success comes from his already established follower base he got being a political/social commentator. It’s like EVS says his fans feel they need to support him because it’s all about the culture war. If he were competing in the direct market like in comic book stores it would be different. Also technically yes you can say the same for EVS however a lot of his following came from his rep of being a professional comic book artist and despite being late his books have been quite good. He’s only losing people because he’s vocal and controversial but I believe his business will be successful long term.
Eric does come off as thin-skinned. His inability to reply to basic questions is really off-putting. He really shouldn't get heated like that just because someone puts a bit of pressure on him.

I just finished reading Isom. It's pretty bad. I kept asking myself "why?" "Why this?" "Wait, where are we?" I've read Dune and lots of complex sci-fi that I understood well. Isom is just a confusing mess.

Eric July angrily missing one of the fundaments of visual-media story-telling: show don't tell. Nobody knows isom's powers or motivations because the whole comic seems to be bogged down in internal monologues instead of any actual superheroing (or anti-heroing or whatever, it would be nice to see one or the other). How do we know isom cant fly? Because he had an internal monologue about it. Why did flash think he could fly? Because there was promotional material SHOWING him in the air. The powers and motivations aren't clear because they aren't shown except for "well wouldn't you assume based on his monologue?" Good writing has examples. We need examples. Examples that make it clear that you made actual choices about your character and the plot

People spent a lot of money to buy the first comic ever written by a guy who hasn't written comics, and it sounds wildly unfinished if, again, the first issue lacks any clear examples of the protagonist's abilities or motivations. "wait until the next book" doesn't justify the obvious composition errors of issue number one. There are differences between good writing and bad writing. I don't care that Eric July was successful selling an unfinished comic, but he ought to have the humility to recognize that his first attempt isn't the best comic ever written, and he should care enough about his art and his audience to at least accept criticism on the obvious, frankly rookie mistakes he made. He needs an editor, who would have given him similar notes.

Look at any strong comic series and the first chapter always gives you a strong idea of what's going on with the main character's motivations, their powers, and the setting. This is true for both western comics and manga. Do they need to give you EVERYTHING? No, obviously but the beginning of the story is where you set up the motivations and the stakes - when you have a weak motivation and poorly defined stakes there has to be something else that stands out for your story to actually be read as good. Also, Eric is the one that seems to think he's God's gift to comic books. His confidence far outstrips his actual competency and the bitchy response to some pretty mild criticism shows this arrogance. If it's his first attempt, he ought to be more open to critique - but he's acting like he's a veteran who knows exactly what he's doing.

The cross on his costume changes colors, though the link between that and his abilities has not been revealed. You also learn that Yaira isn’t from Earth, she’s much older than she appears, she controls whirlwinds, has ice seeping from her pours, she is both an archeologist as well as a biologist and she has wiped out armies in the past.

EJs success comes from his already established follower base he got being a political/social commentator. It’s like EVS says his fans feel they need to support him because it’s all about the culture war. If he were competing in the direct market like in comic book stores it would be different.
Also technically yes you can say the same for EVS however a lot of his following came from his rep of being a professional comic book artist and despite being late his books have been quite good. He’s only losing people because he’s vocal and controversial but I believe his business will be successful long term.
Eric does come off as thin-skinned. His inability to reply to basic questions is really off-putting. He really shouldn't get heated like that just because someone puts a bit of pressure on him.

I'm astounded how dumb the majority of people on this panel are. I actually feel bad for Eric, he showed up to talk about his comic and it turned into a bunch of midwits arguing about pedo hunting.
It is HARD to articulate and defend your own writing. Probably because of that, Eric opts to be overly defensive and it doesn't make him come across all that well, but I think he is genuine and I hope he's receptive to someone's advice in the future.

Eric July angrily missing one of the fundaments of visual-media story-telling: show don't tell. Nobody knows isom's powers or motivations because the whole comic seems to be bogged down in internal monologues instead of any actual superheroing (or anti-heroing or whatever, it would be nice to see one or the other). How do we know isom cant fly? Because he had an internal monologue about it. Why did flash think he could fly? Because there was promotional material SHOWING him in the air. The powers and motivations aren't clear because they aren't shown except for "well wouldn't you assume based on his monologue?" Good writing has examples. We need examples. Examples that make it clear that you made actual choices about your character and the plot

People spent a lot of money to buy the first comic ever written by a guy who hasn't written comics, and it sounds wildly unfinished if, again, the first issue lacks any clear examples of the protagonist's abilities or motivations. "wait until the next book" doesn't justify the obvious composition errors of issue number one.
There are differences between good writing and bad writing. I don't care that Eric July was successful selling an unfinished comic, but he ought to have the humility to recognize that his first attempt isn't the best comic ever written, and he should care enough about his art and his audience to at least accept criticism on the obvious, frankly rookie mistakes he made. He needs an editor, who would have given him similar notes.
@@laisphinto6372 He's not a good enough writer to be able to deviate in the way that you've described. Look at any strong comic series and the first chapter always gives you a strong idea of what's going on with the main character's motivations, their powers, and the setting. This is true for both western comics and manga. Do they need to give you EVERYTHING? No, obviously but the beginning of the story is where you set up the motivations and the stakes - when you have a weak motivation and poorly defined stakes there has to be something else that stands out for your story to actually be read as good.
Also, Eric is the one that seems to think he's God's gift to comic books. His confidence far outstrips his actual competency and the bitchy response to some pretty mild criticism shows this arrogance. If it's his first attempt, he ought to be more open to critique - but he's acting like he's a veteran who knows exactly what he's doing.

Eric July just doesn't get it. No shit the character has super powers, but they need to be defined to the reader, because the reader is not clairvoyant.
There’s a bit of info on the characters, but it was sold separately on cards. Isom has mysterious super strength and enhanced physical prowess that’s growing at an exponential rate. The cross on his costume changes colors, though the link between that and his abilities has not been revealed. You also learn that Yaira isn’t from Earth, she’s much older than she appears, she controls whirlwinds, has ice seeping from her pours, she is both an archeologist as well as a biologist and she has wiped out armies in the past.

The fact that Eric got so bent out of shape and takes pains to explain every little detail of his non story tells me he was too proud to get one and thinks the confusion is the fault of the reader

Its normal for Eric to not take criticism from Dick, its the way Dick is coming off and making insuling criticism rather than genuine well thought out criticism. If someone comes at u this hostile for literally no reason publicly, you will not give them the satisfaction even if they’re right

You can tell when a person is upset. Look for the minor details. "That's how you feel & I'm ok with that" after every decent point that is made. It's basically like saying, opinions are like assholes everybody got 1.
