What rules do you always follow on the bike?
Use your brakes
I always cycle about on cronky looking bike so it’s not nicked!
my most important rule:
drive like everyone else on the road is trying to kill you or don't see you.
It's saved my ass and my head numerous times. Examples like:
cars stopping on the bike path in intersections
stopping in intersections where I actually have the right of way because I'm not in a 2 ton death box
pedestrians walking willy-nilly out on the road/bike path (sometimes I ride by them super-close so they freak out. I know I'm a bad guy but I'm trying to invoke learning by experience.)
the list goes on ad infinitum....
Drink a beer every 10 kilometres.
Waving. I don't give a crap what you're riding, I ALWAYS wave! Nothing ruder than a snobby cyclist that won't wave back!
Waving at other cyclists? I live in Holland. if I want to wave at all other cyclists on my daily commute I can quit my dayjob LOL.
Duncan Van der Aar Same here in WIsconsin.
ibikeec oh nothing beats Dutch cycling just search up cycling Amsterdam
I love the waving part, makes me feel part of a community even when I'm riding alone
So true!
Sometimes it is unsafe to take your hand off the bar and wave so I do the hands on the bar fingers wave on those occasions
Plenty of riders out there who don't wave back though. I shout TWAT over my shoulder, maybe I should just let it go...
@@mikieson You aren't working hard enough if you can take a hand off of the bars to wave.
I prefer nodding my head
Love Manon giving the Queen’s wave.
We are amused.
going to make the point to wave like that around here, and i will be getting burned for years
When he was in Switzerland I saw and waved at Si.. he didn't wave me back... :-(
You should have BOOOO'ed him as what the video said..... :D
Hahaha
We apologies profusely!
Hahahaha
I will blow winds on him for you in Mallorca (in the unlikely event that I am ahead of him).
Thats the biggest Pinarello frame i have ever seen
Chris froome has competition
I could barely even sit on the top tube of that bike and ride it
Wow you aren't kidding!
that's like a 58 or 60
It's two joined together
I believe cyclists that DO NOT wave back "Is rude!" however, it might be the cyclist that doesn't wave back might be novice and scared of taking hands off bars...Great Rules to follow, thanks for pointing out
Or perhaps they just haven't seen. On quiet, straight road its easy to slip into a state of total focus on during an interval or climb
That makes 80% of roadies "rude", all be it I'm on a mountain bike, is that a valid excuse for the roadie?
@@learigg no accuse, when I'm on my MTB the Roadies never wave regardless
Sometimes it's not safe to wave. It can be misunderstood as a turn signal.
@@bobumbel not waving because they're scared to take their hands off the handlebar is not an excuse. i wave, when i can't wave i nod, when i can't nod i say hey! So when they don't do anything it's just rude :)
As a Boy Scout I was taught to greet everyone I met on the hicking trail as they might be the people helping you out in case of trouble. I have taken that teaching to heart while on the bike.
Still miss Emma but Manon is filling the void nicely.
Has she left
im tryna fill her void
@@angusowens1189 I didn't hear of her leaving, but maybe she has. I haven't seen her in a while.
Living in Arkansas, we became the second state to legally allow cyclists not to stop at a stop sign, only yield. At a red light we must stop but can proceed if nobodies there without getting a ticket!
I think makes total sense not to remain for a period of time waiting in an intersection, very dangerous...
What's the other state?
If you ever meet the bloke who came up with that rule, give him a handshake on behalf of all of us. He obviously appreciates the logic of not wasting valuable effort/energy when the way is (usually) clear, just for the sake of "Rulesssz!!!1!!One" .
@@estuardogudiel531 Idaho. It's referred to as an "Idaho stop" here in the States.˜
I notice that when I'm riding my mountain bike down the road to get to the trails, road cyclists usually won't wave back. Tribalism.
I found, after a couple of months in Holland, that very few road cyclists wave/say hi here. But then again, there are some many cyclists and bike paths, you would be waving constantly...
I can honestly say in the 5 years of cycling I've done (England) every single time I've waved at someone I have NEVER received a wave back, however I still maintain the rule, its just polite, so i will continue to do so.
The 3 of them sitting on the wall at the end 😂😂😂 Conor is a giant!!!
next time they need to put conor sitting closest to the camera so he really does look like a giant
My rule: Even when you want to scream, be courteous to cars and communicate your intentions on the road by bike placement in the lane, head nods, eye contact, hand signals, waving thank you, and following the rules of the road. This builds trust and helps all cyclists. Don't roll past cars at a light unless you are certain you can turn and clear the lane while the cars stand; otherwise, you are just making them pass you again. Why would you even want that? I really believe drivers don't want to hurt us, but they get angry and frustrated over not knowing what to do around us. So, help them out. See Forester's, Effective Cycling for more.
ef2b i follow this approach too
Re: not passing cars at a light... that's an interesting point and one which I'm guilty of not doing. My rides are almost exclusively on congested city roads and not getting ahead as much as I can whilst at the lights will slow down the commute significantly. Thing is with the amount of traffic I'm talking about I can still usually stay in front of most of the pack so overtaking me wouldn't be a problem they need to worry about.
Honest qsn: Is this considered rude?
@@mcq2525 Honest answer: yes. I've commuted in heavy urban traffic and into urban traffic from the outskirts of some of the largest US cities. You'll have to decide for yourself, but the problem is that car drivers do not expect vehicles to suddenly appear in their space, and that is what you're doing when you appear up front of the queue. At that point, the driver knows you're not following the rules of the road and has to wonder what you're going to do next. Will you stay to the right (in the US), will you take the lane, will you cut in front and turn? There's resentment there, I think, and frustration. In the city traffic that I've been in, other than busses, it's rare for me to stay ahead of all the cars. When I see other cyclists, they get passed again and again, light by light. Your situation could be different. You'll have to decide, but there's a message sent just by passing the queue of cars. In these situations, I stop behind the last car and join the queue. I'm in the lane, but to the side, so cars behind me can't pass and pull up behind me. I'm in the lane for the direction I'm going to take. Cars know what I'm going to do from my placement on the road. This is a topic that divides cyclists and many will say I'm being a jerk and lecturing, but you said it was an honest question, so I answered with my opinion. You'll have to decide for yourself.
ef2b Really appreciate the honest feedback. It’s certainly one for me to mull over a bit more
This is a fun trio, seem to have a good vibe going.
You guys are to cool for school.. slick vid with a message.. nice one all! 🚴🚴🚴
Mannons royal 👑 wave 1:27. Haha. The Queen of GCN has arrived gents. 😂
I just nod and smile/say “Hi!” when I’m too shattered to wave lol
Haha good voodoo Which Doctor
Great job guys and welcome! It is nice to have you.
The new “where to click” with this trio has me cracking up every time 😂
Ive recently got into cycling and when i see others i always give a head nod ans they always give one back its like a mini sign of respect
I also wave at oncoming traffic, (cars and trucks). I think it personalized you and others as riders in the eyes of the drivers. If a car is behind and waits until it is safe to pass, I also wave as they go by, thanking them for there courtesy. Finally, in addition to breaking wind, don't spit or do a snot rocket if it may hit another rider.
So many times I say to myself, I'm not waving anymore. No one waves back, but the next time I ride I still end up waving 😏
1:24 Oh my God, that's a psychopath right there.
"Cleaning your bike isn't as fun as riding it?" You clearly don't have my level of OCD. 😁
This has to be the 10th time or so I saw a video like that on GCN, just with different presenters.
Coming on next... proper nutrition before ride on Wednesdays :-/.
Can understand that if you're a long term subscriber/follower of the channel then this might become a bit tedious but not everyone is and thankfully more and more people are starting up road cycling or any other form of cycling for that matter and are loving these videos as fresh content to them, as they were to you at one time. Not every new cyclist/subscriber will go through the back catalogue of videos. If they did, as I have, you dont have to go back too far before the previous vids look dated and maybe irrelevant given the rate of technology, kit and overall advancement of our ever evolving passtime/hobby/sport or obsession. To the new and old presenters this is their living and they and the producers are creating regular "fresh and current" content for the now! All videos are clearly titled as to what the content is so if you're a seasoned pro in that particular subject you don't have to watch, the next one might be just what you're after, and let the others enjoy. Keep it up GCN been riding for 6 months, thanks partly for this channel but been eagerly watching for longer. 👍👍
@@swardy78 People starting up should be able to use the search function.
@@swardy78 Short answer, thinking and for example marking "new" videos with prefix "[remake]" won't hurt.
One more kids, never spit without looking before launching the looggy. Don't want to get it on your fellow cyclists or pedestrians.
This one’s a biggy!
That Queen wave was hilarious!
@ 3:30 you can see a giant and 2 midgets hanging out on a wall
Waving other cyclists: When I started cycling more than 30 years ago, almost every cyclist greeted another cyclist when they passed each other. I still do it, but I feel that less than half of the cyclists still do it too. This has started 15-10 years ago, I think, when cycling became more and more popular. When I'm on my (almost yearly) cycling trip on Mallorca however, most cyclist still wave, which gives me double joy, both from cycling as is, and the greetings. I will never ever stop raising my hand when passing other riders.
Fun video
2:27 - WD40 is hecticly being sprayed all over the place, clearly breaking the rule that you should keep the disc rotors and oily/silicony substances appart.
Kaupo Raag yup WD lived by GCN
I stopped the video to write the same thing! I think MTBers are MUCH more careful about disc contamination - Roadies need to get with the program! DO NOT overspray onto your discs.
It's degreaser..
You can always spray degreaser on the disc? Also take the pads and wheels out during decreasing washing.
@@Forthebees and it is OK to spray degreaser in that manner? The oils and gunk from the drivetrain are still transported to the rotors (look at the spray).
I think a good idea for a giveaway is a ride with Connor, Mannon, and James. They seem like the happiest trio of cyclists one could hope to ride with. Thank you for a little ray of sunshine on a wintry morning.
finally a tall presenter...now a like GCN even more ❤️❤️❤️
Neagrau Codrut agreed, being 198 cm myself, I hope he will be making size 63 frames look cool as hell in future.....
We can now “run” red lights in Oregon. The actual law change allows cyclists to go through a red light after stopping when the intersection is clear.
Good point, in some places this is actually legal! Always best to check the law where you're riding so you can ride safely and legally 😀
Could you guys do a longer in-depth video on all group riding hand signals? And how they vary in different parts of the world?
2:26 I have a rule not to spray aerosols near a disc rotor and pads! I hope that was only brake cleaner/isopropyl alcohol!
Thank you, I do almost of that.
What if the tail wind is very high so the fart will waft towards the front ?
Rule 6. If you see a cyclist stoped by the side of the road ask them if they are ok.
"that was rude" haha you guys are hilarious
I still am very impressed and amazed when I see cyclists actually stopped at traffic lights. I myself am about to start cycling after 35 years off the bike. Wish me luck! I am a bit nervous but also very excited. And I intend to use the road and not the pavement.
Loving the Royal wave
If there’s not much traffic around, and where I live that’s usually the case, I “Idaho Stop” at stop signs and lights. Plus, a lot of the sensors for lights around here won’t pick up bikes (even the ones the city says will and I ride a heavy steel bike) so no use in waiting for that light to turn green.
Manon Fill in Great !! She look like she a good rider !! Thanks for the 411 !!
Manon: Obey the rules of the road, everyone, this is a big one here at GCN.
Manon after the cut: descending on the wrong side of the road. ^^
Well, that is a Spanish mountain road (thick dashed paint) only indicate the centerline of the asphalt, not delimiting lanes. In reality she is not breaking any rule there.
travel.stackexchange.com/questions/125127/whats-the-meaning-of-the-sign-broken-white-line-only-marks-the-centre-of-the-r
@@LainOTN not really. It is delimiting the lanes. Not being a continuous line means you're allowed to overtake by crossing over.
@@josepedromarques7336 No. No marca carriles, solo indica el eje de la carretera para en caso de encontrarse dos vehículos poder medir mejor las distancias. NO marca carriles.
1:54 he definitely heard being called rude, turning around in the road
HAHAHHAHA had to go back at check that
Hell, he must be from Texas. Bunch of rude lookbacks there.
Manon's unspoken rule: drop the letter 'g' from the end of "…ing" words. 😛 I love her manner of talkin'!
Without hearing rule 5, I was chewing my granola and I let it go at the same time with Conor. 😝😅
Everytime I spray lube the way you did in the video I screw my rear rotor lol
Waving at cyclists is all well and good when you're in a rural area, but when you're in a city environment and you see cyclists every 5 seconds, it becomes difficult to wave to everyone. When I lived in NYC I pretty much ignored most people because otherwise I'd more or less just have my hand off the bars permanently.
Manon's got it goin on with the Royal wave :-)
What was the location of this video?
A good excuse for hanging round at the back and not doing your turn on the front then! "Sorry guys, got a bit of a wind problem today"...
Regarding stop lights, if it is safe and no incoming traffic, I cross it, I feel very vurnerable to stay in an intersection waiting for the green light if I am turning left (in US, crossing the opposite lanes). I know I know, I am breaking the law, but...
Was that opening shot in Soller Port? I swear I recognise it.
Waving at other cyclists - are you turning, or going to do something? Don't ride a black bike, dressed in black, with no lights and often no reflectors...came across one a few nights ago as I was about to come out of a side turning...I saw him, but only just and only because I was checking really hard at that particular side road as it is a black spot. Oh you mention cleaning your bike, I'd have thought a little thing like maintaining it would be front and centre!
Is Connor running 900c wheels om his bike?
I like how they're in Small, Medium and Large at the end 😋
A better idea is to always wear fluorescent jackets and lights ,as the clothing that you are wearing will earn you a Darwin award you blend in with the road unless it's a very bright day
Do you still wave every time if you pass hundreds?
You can't always wave to everyone if there's loads of riders out on the road, but a simple 'hello' and a wave every now and then can be really encouraging for other riders.
Hats off to the camera man who managed to keep connor in these shots him n manon side by side is like a penny farthing and a balance bike
Mannon's wave was very royalesq and farting is always funny and if you can pop one off whilst on the from is even funnier!!
Not waving, it happens all the time, not just cycling. I was in the supermarket yesterday buying sausages and there were two other people also in the meat section buying sausages so I waved hello to them because we both have the same interest in buying sausages and I felt the need to identify myself with them over a similar interest. Neither one said hello back. How unfriendly are sausage eaters ? All I wanted was validation that we were all buying sausages.
I'm glad the man let his little children be in the video too ;-)
I used to wave to every cyclist I saw but as time passed I’ve noticed less & less responses. It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even bother waving or nodding. Sad but true
It's on: this Sunday the Dutch 'cycling into the wind' championship!
Just “ hanging out with the crew “ 3:37 ... terrified I am.
Best cycling songs , Tour De France , Ride like the Wind !
I've never heard of waving before, the most I do is nodding or ringing my bell
waving? what?! never seen anybody in the UK wave!
Red lights can be pain in the ass… Lots of intersections here in CZ have car detection system for turning left or from less frequent roads (usually induction cable in tarmac). Point is, the bicycle is not big enough conductive body to trigger the system so you can wait for all eternity, unless there is a car to trigger the system for you. Usually when I don't get green in one whole cycle, I proceed on red (which is technicaly illegal, but does anyone have a better solution?).
Very good point. I do the same here in Cambridgeshire
2:27 Shouldn't you not use WD40 on bike components?
I've been waving for 35 years... even way back when there hardly any cyclists to wave to... most people do wave but the majority of cyclists who pass me going in the same direction do not say hello.... which seems odd... and even more so when stationary at the side of the road no one asks if I'm ok... fixing a puncture recently and 6 people passed by not one asked if I needed help.. even stranger...
We're big supporters of acknowledging any and every cyclist you see!
I’ve tried waving. I must have been encountering snobs. I don’t take my hands off the bars now. I give a nod and that’s it.
Don't give up, some riders don't know that waving is something that people do - they have to be waved at a few times before they start doing it themselves
When riding the lanes around Bath, I wave at cyclists but also at motorists. There's a strict hierarchy of acknowledgements. A motorist who just moves over a little or slows down a little will get a nod, one who slows right down or moves into a passing place will get a salute, anyone who pulls off the road and stops, or who, like the white van driver on Dundry Hill, reverses to a passing place, will get a salute, a smile, and a thumbs up.
A Refreshing Woo-Hoo!!
New Tour de France strategy: Pick one guy on the team. While everyone eats healthy, he eats burritos. He goes to the front of the pelaton and starts dropping bombs to get everyone to slow down. I think this could change cycling forever.
At some level the speed, pace, and dynamics of the group prohibit waving to other cyclists. Likewise, the wide roads of America just make it pointless. Fine if out for a stroll, zone one or two, where one is upright and out enjoying the sun, but if trying to average 20 MPH or above throughout a solo ride it's tough enough fighting the wind.
The new presenter is super tall , his bike is enormous!
I have two questions.
How tall exactly is Connor and how big is his bike?!
Very tall, and very big!
@@gcn very very big
I know I stick to many of those rules, but damn if I still don't get crap from motorists. Tuesday was a heck of a ride, three cars just laid on their horns at me and two yelled things that just weren't pleasant. They just had to let me know that roads are for cars only.
Waving is weird in Utah. Usually it’s just a lift of two fingers of the left❤ hand. ❤❤Some acknowledge by either tipping the head or nothing. I just think they are concentrating on their goal for the day. It doesn’t bother me. If I get a wave back, that’s cool. I don’t wave at all the cyclists.
Rule#2, wave at fellow cyclist's.
I ride a road bike, cyclo-cross bike and a mountain bike, when I am riding my mountain bike and riding on the road, I acknowledge ALL other ridersas usual, but I have NEVER seen a ROADY wave back when the notice I'm not on a rod bike, there is a huge snobbery from some of our road cycling friends.
We are ALL representing cycling....
How about if your leading a group not to just stop without warning. Especially to talk to a mate.
*about* *rule* *2:*
I'm a raging introvert. I might not wave not because I'm rude, but because there are 25 things going on at once in my head and making eye contact with you is harder than my climb.
Don't worry about their bullshit. The GCN crew are a bunch of extroverts that has it in their head that you should wave at dudes on Bromptons and ghetto kids on stolen mountain bikes. "Every cyclists is a cyclist" or something like that.
Hi fun video . Who is the female manon what is her last name
The "not breaking snobbish rules" is said by a guy who sounds like he went to Eton with Prince Harry. Hilarious.
Here in the philippines holes in the road are so many so many cyclist use mtb in the road
rule 3 is a tough one
Sorry the red light is very debatable. Loads of countries don't force that rule, like France and Paris in particular. Here in the uk most traffic lights only change when a car is approaching, not a bicycle, therefore that rule is rubbish, unless you want to stay in one spot for several minutes.
i don't wave, i shout HEEEEEEEEEEEEYYYY!!!!!! :D Most of the time they're so excited they actually stop their bikes to shout back.
Best cycling movie's Breaking Away , American Flyers , 2 Seconds , Quicksilver .
I always node or wave at other cyclists, but nowadays I seem to get ignored. Happiness seems to be in short supply at present 😐
I dont know about anyone else, but I can quite happily spend 2 or 3 hours intricately washing and cleaning my bike, I do enjoy. My bike looks so damn good when its gleaming and coated in polish and wax 😍
Can someone tell me how Connor fits on that Dogma, I'm 6'9" and can't believe he's actually making it work.
600mm seat post...
I missed seeing Si
If a runner waves his hand or says good morning its curtious to say good morning back..... most of us runners are in Bike Clubs too
Conner!!!! 🚴 💨 = 10 watt increase .
Jk 😂
