  • Millipedes, unlike their cousins the centipedes, do not have venom, and are generally very peaceful little arthropods. But do the giant millipedes make good pets, and are they the best pet invertebrates for you?

I had the truly huge African millipedes before they got banned. Excellent pet bugs that my kid adored playing with. One thing Clint doesn't mention is that most millipedes come with tiny mites on them. These too are harmless and won't leave the bug to jump onto you. It's a symbiotic relationship that benefits both critters. As long as the mite population isn't for some reason too numerous, it's beneficial to the millipede. Just don't freak out if you see tiny bugs on your much larger bug.

!Important!: You get more than just the millipede. All of them have special little mites that live on them. These mites are passed down from mother to child because they lay their eggs with the millipede when she lays hers. they are beneficial parasites that clean their surface and destroy other harmful parasites. If you kill them or if they die off it is bad for your pet.

Millipedes do not need water bowls, they could drown even in very shallow water and will be hydrated enough by simply keeping the substrate moist and misting every few days depending on the amount of ventilation (more ventilation means more frequent misting). I have never kept A. gigas (the pede in the video) but I keep many US native species. Clint mentions that they can be given 'small amounts of meat' but I assume he means protein, such as fish flakes or pre-killed insects. I'm sure they could eat meat, but the smell (and the pests attracted to it) would definitely be unpleasant. Clint also did not mention a defense mechanism that most millipedes have; when stressed or scared they can secrete an irritating chemical from the sides of their body that can stain your skin. It smells unpleasant and in some extreme cases may cause itching or burning. In my experience they don't do this often (they will poop on you first more often than not), but its important to know. Also important note about handling: NEVER hold them more than a few inches from the ground as even a short fall can easily kill them. Clint had me on edge for the whole video with the way he was handling it.
Hope this was helpful to anyone interested in keeping millipedes! They are very lovely pets and I'm glad Clint is showing one off, super cute :)

I'm so happy you're covering millipedes! When I kept them (smaller species, not the giant ones) they didn't like to drink out of a dish so I would spray water on the sides of their enclosure and they would climb over the sides and eat the bubbles. It was very cute.

Thank you for this video, Clint! I used to have one of these guys about 15 years ago named Peetie, and he was such an amazing dude. Unfortunately, he escaped one day when his lid wasn't secured and he passed before I could find him. I would love to have another one, if they weren't so expensive now that they've stopped importation. I personally love the way their legs feel, kinda like getting a hug from a stiff bristled brush.

Chef here: love the videos, you're a lot of fun. Okay, mechanically separated. Imagine a tube with a screen on one end. Throw your chicken carcasses in with guts removed. Organs like heart, kidneys, and liver will still be there. A piston comes down with a lot of pressure and the soft bits go to one side of the screen and the hard bits stay on the inside. It could possibly be used at this point but it's usually fed into a mixer/grinder of sorts where a liquidy sludge is the result of that.

So I picked it up with a napkin and took it out while taking the trash out, when I noticed it's absolutley /adorable/ eyespots and started looking at it. Fascinating little creature. It sucks that people get so freaked out about them when they're just little sweeties trying to make it in life, unlike centipedes, who I still love, but are terrifying.
