The alternatives are Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 ($700), and Sony 16-55mm F2.8 G ($1150). Just for those who are curious and not yet gone through the whole video.
I got a ZV-E10 some months ago, and coming to choosing a lens I had precisely these three options in mind (Sigma, Sony and Tamron). Finally the price difference made me choose the Sigma, as you say it's super versatile and the quality is absolutely smashing. I spent in total 1000 euros and some of the results I'm getting look fantastic, sure a prime lens would be better in low light but other than that this 18-50 works great.
Lucky enough to get it in a brief flash sale earlier this year for $449. Absolutely fantastic lens. I have the Sigma Trio (16mm, 30mm, 56mm), but this has become my everyday lens. I'm really tempted to upgrade to the a6700 from my a6500, too.
My A6400, bought new two moths ago for an upgrade from A6000, will do the same superb quality with that Sigma 18-50mm for "photos" without any optical difference vs A6600 or A6700.
I love the kit lens because it turns the zv-e10 into a pocket camera. Even the a6700 with kit lens fit in my front pocket (baggy hiking pants) but barely.
I have used this lens for about 6 months and is my go-to lens on my a6000 although I have the f1.4 trio which are all fantastic but are bulky for running around. I use all 4 Sigma lenses and others both on the a6000 but also my a7r. The full frame sensor gives anything from 16 to 35MP depending on the lens image diameter and whether you use crop mode. BTW the Sony 85mm f1.8 gives me 23.9MP on the APSC. A lovely autofocus 128mm equivalent portrait/ short telephoto prime; and is a steal at the going price.
Credible, balanced review without distracting hype, likable host. I have the lens on my A6600 - my go-to lens. Has excellent image quality. Good value and ergonomics. Should be a fine match for A6700.
Thanks for a thorough walkthrough of the options, currently REALLY considering the 6700 as it’s the only cam I can afford that has a flippyscreen, larger battery, the ai-chip and the viewfinder - still a couple of months away from pulling the trigger on the 6700 but so excited :)
If I hadn’t the ZV-E10 I would probably be considering the new A6700.. with the new features like 10 bit, 4:2:2, 120fps 4K, it has bumped up the price unfortunately 😅
@@RogerAVHansen yeah I was considering the e10, but felt like it had too many corners cut and I would probably outgrow it too fast, while the 6700 has enough of the little extra’s that might make it last at least 2-3 years before I (hopefully) will need a more powerfull camera (if everything goes according to plan - and with 10-bit and raw there is enough quality in the files to be able to dig down and learn color grading stuff and actually get good results from it :)
Nice video and very interesting topic to me: I just pre-ordered the A6700 body and sold my A6400 one. I have the Sigma 1.4 trio which are fantastic and have been tempted by this 18-50 ever since it came out but held back because it's basically what the trio does slightly better. Still it's size, price and versatility keeps tingling and nagging my consumer addiction. Another lens in my kit is the SONY 18-135 which except for the smaller and variable aperture is extremely good and versatile with its very wide focal range. See my dilemma: Between 18 and 50 mm my kit would become very crowded and I have a hard time justifying purchasing it without parting with something else I like too....... What would you do?
The focal length of the 18-135 is really versatile! The downside is the variable aperture. And the lens is bigger in size if I’m not mistaken. I guess it depends of what you need. My need is to have a small camera (ZV-E10 for me) and a small but good lens, and that’s why I chose the Sigma lens. The Sigma trio is really nice, but I don’t want to bring three primes when I can get one lens that does 90% of the same work. Haven’t decided if I’m getting rid of the ZV-E10 for the benefit of the A6700.. it looks like a really good camera.
@@RogerAVHansen that makes a lot of sense indeed. And we have to give it to zoom lenses they are always ready to capture. Hmmmm, let's wait till Christmas and see if I am still tempted 😉
How about the other sony kit lens? The 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS. It's 36g heavier and 3mm longer and has a different aperture but is only $400 when bundled with the camera. ($650 new) It also has OSS and much more zoom.
My friend just got the same camera and lens but he tells me the camera says: Lens not attached correctly or not supported when he turns Auto Focus System.....can you use your autofocus without problem with yours?
The camera in the thumbnail is the ZV-E10 if that’s what you’re referring to 😊 Don’t think the A6700 has the same type of in camera microphone so I don’t think you can.
Yeah I'd been thinking it might be better to pickup a Sony A7RV on the second hand market rather than going for the A6700. I currently have a A6600 with crop sensor specific lenses. I get the feeling that Sony try to entice the likes of me into the full frame realm where there maybe greater profit margins for them.
I think the A6700 has a lot of the features from the newer full frame cameras, specifically the A7RV and ZV-E1.. if you already have a lot of APS-C lenses I would consider getting the A6700 instead of the A7RV…
Guessing you put the Sigma on the Sony A7R 5 "to bring a decent camera" because the EV-10 isn't that great of a camera, although it does very well with video. Seems the A6700 could end up being a better camera, and do quite well with video too.
The A7RV is a better camera than the ZV-E10 over all, but doesn’t make the ZV-E10 a bad camera 😊 The A6700 is a better camera than the ZV-E10, a lot more features over all. But we have to pay for it 😅
Possibly, I don’t have the A6700 myself, I would suggest looking up other videos on UA-cam from creators that were so lucky to be sent the camera for testing in advance..
So, you already have the best aps-c camera sony offers, A7R5 :) (as I have) 26mp, better evf, better screen, better ibis, dual card slots etc. a6700 body may be smaller, but while having the a7r5's all the improved features, I just can't quite justify buying a6700 even for travel. Already being invested in a7r5 is also a point, but I'm not talking about the money side of it here. Sony at least should have improved the ibis and put better screen on it, even if not with the 4 axis articulation. If that happened, Sony could have sold me another body. I already sold my a6600 last year but kept sony 16-55 and 70-350. Now, I might sell the 16-55, but will keep the 70-350, it is a very good telephoto option for travel with a7r5 in apc-c mode.
The A7RV is a great full frame camera, but like you say, it’s also a great camera in crop mode! Still having 26mp in crop mode is more than other full frame cameras 😊 But as a second camera I think the A6700 could be great.
Not much quality difference between the two from the tests I’ve seen.. but absolutely a good tip to look at the used market. Goes for the Sigma lens as well ☺️
18mm on APS-C is definitely not wide enough for vlogging. And gosh that ZV-E10 footage looks like trash, so happy they improved the readout speed in the new A6700. Can't wait for ZV-E20 with the improved sensor to come out.
I own 18-50 sigma. Crazy good lens - super sharp, accurate and fast focus, and this size for this aperture and performance is crazy.
Does it do active stabilisation on videos on Sony a6700?
@Avdarmaly The A6700 has IBIS so you will het more stable footage, but of course the IBIS can only do so much.
The alternatives are Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 ($700), and Sony 16-55mm F2.8 G ($1150). Just for those who are curious and not yet gone through the whole video.

Thank you for the review Indeed looking at this Sony and Sigma combination Hoping ibis on the 6700 is enough for some video
Sigma 10-18 f 2.8 is coming 5th October. Great combo
I love the kit lens because it turns the zv-e10 into a pocket camera. Even the a6700 with kit lens fit in my front pocket (baggy hiking pants) but barely.
Yeah, the small size of the kit lens is definitely a 👍🏻
I plan on using this for the A7RV as well. Mayne you can do a video on that!?
I’ll think about that ☺️

You can put a dead at on top of A5700?

Thanks for the great video. How did you set up the microphone for vlogging. Were you using AirPods to record audio?
AirPods was only used to listen to music 😊 I used the internal microphone on the ZV-E10 for the vlogging part 😊
