    Nice to see this video get an update, especially the part about why the grip on the first model wasn’t for shooting while descending. Another side note about that, Fallschimjaeger dropped a lot lower than other nations paratroopers so they would have little time to fire at the enemy while descending.

    Explaining it again because why not.
    The "egg-laying woolly dairy pig" ("eierlegende Wollmilchsau" in German) is a colloquial term in German that (often jokingly) describes something seemingly being good at everything imaginable and/or having advantages only/no disadvantages one can think of. The term works with a fictional animal that can lay eggs (hen), give wool (sheep), give milk (dairy cow) as well as give meat (pig), so something having advantages only.

    I believe that Goring refused to consider having these weapons chambered for 7.92 kurz. I personally think this would have improved the weapon no end. The magazine housing could have been adapted to accept the Stg44 magazines. The main advantage with this would be the low profile that the side mounted magazine offered, as opposed to the Stg44. That said, there is plenty of pictorial evidence of paratroopers using the Stg44 in the latter part of the war, especially in the Western theatre.

    The major nations in WWII had researched the best weapon for paratroopers.
    The American made M1 Carbine, it is easy to use and easy to produce, it is semi-sutomatic that it can give a okay spread of firepower but good accuracy. However, the .30 caliber rounds are weak.
    The Japanese made the TERA rifle, it can be split into two parts for easy carrying and it will be attached back together when landed on the area of operation. You can say it is a Arisaka rifle that cut into two halves. However, it is still a bolt-action rifle and the gun's air tightness is the problem, it is easy to get blown up when shooting.
    The Germans made the FG 42, it uses standard rifle rounds and selective fire function, it can work as both battle rifle and light machine gun. but it still too heavy and expensive to produce.
    Until the birth of the assault rifle, the assault rifle with the shortened barrel and the folding stock which it called as "carbine" such as M4 and AKMS is the best answer.

    It’s an interesting sidelight to WWII arms. It was quite accurate, advanced and a good weapon. It just didn’t fill any role that wasn’t already taken. Too, bad. It is Uber cool.
    The German practice of storing all weapons in separate canisters during parachute landings was a horrible decision that cost them dearly on Crete. Greek peasants decimated German paratroopers with the proverbial torches and pitchforks during that landing..
    This left such a sour taste in High Command’s mouths that Paratroopers were rarely used in air drops for the remainder of the war.

    If FG42 was so good then why did the .308 battle rifles fall out of favour?

    • @GritimoTheOdd
      @GritimoTheOdd Рік тому +1

      Largely a change in battle doctrine/tactics. the 308-round battle rifles were often intended to be used as a means of eliminating an enemy by precisely aimed shots. Fighting at the end of ww2, Korea and especially Vietnam showed that the individual grunt on the ground may not always have a clear idea where the enemy is and had to fire in the general area of the enemy to hopefully keep the enemy behind cover while the rest of the unit/squad/platoon flanked and eliminated the enemy position. Keeping the enemy behind cover could take a lot of ammo so switching to the smaller bullets allowed troopers to carry more ammo for the same weight and be able to fight longer. There are a few other factors as well but more ammo for the troopers is a big one.

    FG-42는 독일 공수부대를 위해 만든 돌격 소총으로 이름 그대로 42년에 제작해서 FG-42로 지은것인데 이것도 히틀러가 직접 지은것이다.개전 초기 팔쉬름 야거들의 주력 장비는 슈마이저 MP40과 Kar-98K를 사용하였으며 그래서인지 국방군 장비와 많이 겹치는 경우가 많았다.하지만 크레타 공습때 공수부대의 손실이 많이 발생하여 이를 대응 하기 위해 FG-42를 개발한것이다.
    희한하게도 탄창이 왼쪽으로 있어서 장전하는데는 별 문제가 없지만 문제는 생산이 워낙 적었다.대충 말하면 시대를 잘못 만난 소총중 하나이다.이는 STG-44도 마찬가지였다.
    하지만 종전 이후 FG-42는 훗날 월남전에서 활약한 기관총 M60이 나오게된다.M60은 당연히 미국 무기이다.M60은 원래 MG-42 기반으로 만들려고 했지만 그게 잘 안되어서 FG-42를 참고하여 만들어진게 이것 M60이다.그래서인지 M60은 외형은 FG-42와 비슷하게 나왔다.MG-42는 나중에 나토탄 기준으로 개량해서 나온게 MG3이다.

    Maybe it’s the coolest gun from WW2 but I think not the best. Full auto with 8mm too hard to control. Lower capacity. I’d rather carry the MP 44 with intermediate cartridge and higher capacity. Love the anime.

    I've seen a documentary about WW II German small arms shown back during the late 1990s📺,when they got to the FG-42,experts said when fired on automatic it made a tremendous noise sometimes making the enemy surrender since it fired the full power rifle cartridge,7.92×57mm not the intermediate assault rifle cartridge ,7.92×33mm or pistol cartridge,9×19mm.

  • @juanorosco2870
    @juanorosco2870 Рік тому

    This should be adopted by germany in large quantities, think about this, it uses the 7.92 mauser ammo, has a box magazine, not a lot of recoil, select fire, can fill the role of mg, assault rifle, semi auto rifle and sniper.
    why bother to design the G43 or stg 44 if you already have this?

  • @gratefulguy4130
    @gratefulguy4130 Рік тому +1

    Most people forget to mention the most notable successor of the FG42, the AR15. Although the FG42 actually has more manageable recoil than an AR platform in a similar cartridge.

    • @n.a.4292
      @n.a.4292 Рік тому +3

      100% noooo. The successor of the FG42 is the M60: its first prototype/base was a belt-fed FG42 called T-44.
      The AR-15/AR-10 predecessor could be the Johnson Rifle/LMG: the inventor worked together with Stoner, and the bolt is pretty much the same.

    • @cognitivedisability9864
      @cognitivedisability9864 Рік тому

      Bruh this is so wrong. I think you are mistaking the fg42 with the stg44/43. The fg42 shoots the full 8mm rifle round. The stg used the 8mm kurtz which is a intermediate cartridge simillar to the ar15. It is interesting that the germans had a cartridge and weapon pretty much 30 years before most other militaries finally understood they didnt need the 7.62 in assault rifles. And the UN. had the fn fal in 8mm kurtz ready by 1950. But nobody wanted the intermediate cartridge especially america.
      Note: whsts incredible with the fg42 tho. For such a compact and powerfull rifle it shoots extremely smooth.

    An aside, but I never understood why German paratroopers simply didn't strap a MP40 to themselves. With the mag out and a folding stock, it seems a very workable "jump" weapon and better than carrying a pistol while you try to find a weapon canister.

    • @Nathan-Roman
      @Nathan-Roman Рік тому

      There isn't a pragmatic reason why this wouldn't work, other than concerns over supply, such as issuing MP40s in the first place or the paratroopers being obligated to carry both a rifle and a submachinegun (and ammunition) after the dropped weapons were recovered. I think the main reason is that by the time Germany realized the problem, they already had plans to produce a new weapon specifically for the paratrooper role.

    • @MM22966
      @MM22966 Рік тому

      @@Nathan-Roman Hmmm, I could agree with the later part of your answer but not the first. Plenty of German soldiers carried a subgun as their primary weapon.

      @@MM22966 not as a secondary weapon, which undermines jumping out of a plane carrying a submachinegun when a pistol much lighter and can at least be holstered. German paratroopers did drop with MP40s but as with the regular infantry, they were primarily issued to squad leaders.
