Building A Guitar: Offset Telecaster, DIY | Modern Builds | EP. 64

- Опубліковано 21 тра 2017
- This week I'm building a guitar by taking the parts from another guitar. I combined the electronics and hardware of a Fender Telecaster with the shape of a Jazzmaster. I know these already exist, but I still think it's really cool. Template is available in the written article which will be live tomorrow. Thanks!
The Tele kit I used (mine was from grizzly, but it's the same kit.: (Amazon) geni.us/me4Z

Dude, so glad you took the suggestion to incorporate your music more, love it!
Yeah! it was fun to do it, i'm gonna do it more often for sure
Didn't realize it was Moby, thought it had a title fight vibe kind of... Nice job!
Yay, that is awesome, looking forward to it :D
which moby song is this?
Mike, I love that you point out your mistakes. I watch a lot of maker videos and the majority are edited to make it look like whatever they are making went together without a hitch. I think we all know that isn't always the case. Keep up the strong work.
Thanks Dave! That's good to hear haha!
I agree with this 100%. Every build I do has at least one small hitch that comes up during the making, and I get super frustrated sometimes because it seems like all of the instructional videos I watch just never have any problems.
I used to sketch guitars in middle school, and thought I would build guitars when I grew up if being a rock star didn't work out... we'll I haven't done either, but since I started expanding my "maker" skills i have thought about giving it a go more and more. Thanks for the inspiration! Great video.
Right on! Go for it....It's a lot of fun, and there's a lot more room for error that I was expecting
As long as youve got most of your limbs and at least 1 eye, its never too late man. Go for it!
How u going now mate?
Boy, i love that song in the beginning! Reminds me of Real Estate. Love it.
Would love to hear more of your tunes!
Dude! That's exactly what I was going for haha! That's awesome drew the connection
Always awesome to watch a guitar build! Thanks for sharing!
very nice! I miss seeing handmade guitars. My husband made beautiful guitars when he was alive. His were 2 solid pieces of wood hallowed out in the center. they had a beautiful tone. It is a wonderful talent to make musical instruments. it is good to see that it isn't a lost art.
I'm definitely not talented to that level, but it's definitely an impressive art making really beautifully crafted instruments. Maybe someday I can get there.
That mobo record is the highlight of the video
Hey!! I was waiting for someone to shout it out haha
mobo?
modern baseball
a telemaster?
Not bad!!
Warmoth makes these, and they refer to them as Jazzcaster.
JazzTele
Dude, awesome job! I can't believe you freehand routed everything, I stressed so much when I routed out everything and I was using a template! I need to build another guitar now that I'm better at woodworking. And great tunes! I'd love to collaborate on some kind of music build if you're interested.
Yeah! it's funny, even with all the mistakes, the hardware has so much room to adjust and fix any errors. That would be cool!
Hi guy, that was a great video because it showed me how we can make something with inexpensive parts, that if worked at could end up being pretty good. As you said in this video that this was your first attempt at doing this type of build. It would seem that if you did this again you would be more aware of where to be careful, like the neck pocket and other areas that you mentioned. I think if I did something like this about three times I would develop some skills and learn from mistakes to where I would be able to go on to other better projects. We have to start somewhere and this allows us a way of doing it fairly cheap. Thanks a lot buddy for all of your efforts and for sharing this with us.
Inspirational! Looked like you had a lot of fun with this. I recently bought a cheap guitar, that someone had fully disassembled, from Reverb. Just missing a pickup, but it has all the rest of the parts. It was well under the cost of even a cheap kit, so I figured this would be great to use for a first time build. I've thought about reshaping the body some, to make it more my own and unique, but I wasn't really sure. Your confidence in just going for it with this project has shown me that I should probably just do it. Even if I mess it up, it was cheap, and I'll still learn from the experience.
You did it great!
I watched this video without skipping and I'm going to watch it again.
Very cool! Love the Telemaster idea, I might try to do something similar with some spare walnut I have laying around.
Very cool, I can't wait to see your next attempt
Really cool guitar! I'm at the same point. I feel I'm ready to build one from scratch. May buy the neck. I did a relic and saw a good tip. Before clear coating, put some steel wool in apple cider vinger and let it sit a day or two. You then take the "juice" and rub on the bare wood. After about a day, the wood darkens and looks old, like it was exposed for a long time! Looks cool!👍😎🎸🎶
I really dig the music and the music style. Reminds me that I need to find my War on Drugs record and let it play.
Also great project. Love the cheap materials and the great result. Love that you made it dissstressed. My experience is that when i make stuff like that I end up liking it more than the polished, as they are more honest and you're never afraid of using them.
BEST PROJECT SO FAR!
Very true! I'm not going to be worried about bumping this one against my desk haha!
cool build mate! Can't wait to see the "refined" version
Thanks!!
Man, this is something I've wanted to do for a long time. As an avid player I love collecting guitars, I just love all of the unique aspects to all of the different shapes and designs. Making one of my own would be just awesome, I would probably buy a neck like you've done here. Carving the necks and setting the frets just seems like an absolute science as much as an art, I'm not quite sure I'm up for that task.
No doubt! I don't know if I'd ever make the neck. That's gotta be the toughest part. With making the body, there's room for error, but not for the neck i'd imagine.
Very very cool project dude and something I'm sure you'll now actually have a really hard time every getting rid of, even though, as you say, it was experimental and you want to make one even nicer.
Thanks for putting on the little challenge - it was fun participating in something like this. Cheers
For sure! I saw your squatty potty, it came out really cool! that end grain technique is really cool
Ah thanks man - yea as silly as the concept of one of those things is it made for a great little project build for the maker challenge. And thanks a lot for the sub as well - you're projects are an (obviously) big inspiration to the stuff I try to tackle and how I try to tell my story so I appreciate it. Cheers
Damn, all those beautifull tools, great job aswell, that thing looks stunning.
*Excited for version 2*
Me too!
i like the shape, reminds me of the fender pawn shop series. Not a fan of the distressed look but to each their own. I hope to one day have the tool and skill set to build a guitar.
Great video. I like how you work through or work around obstacles when you don't have all the tools or equipment. Very cool, makes people feel they can do it with the tools they have.
Thanks a lot man! I appreciate it
I'm super inspired right now. I've been wanting to get myself a telecaster but it would be amazing to make one myself as well.
Do it!! The kits make it super easy, and they're pretty cheap
you had me with the MOBO record !! awesome
That was really cool. I'm loving how your space is filled my up with your projects 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thanks a lot!!
Its a incredible and beautiful guitar!!!
Amazing job dude. Congratulations! God bless you.
Thanks Carlos!
Great job man! Modern Baseball vinyl ;-) i love it!
Man, this makes me want to revisit my guitar building phase of life! Nice work!
Haha! Do it!
Love the build, and the mobo record on the shelf. ; ) Thanks for making things man!
For the distressed look I like to put on two different colors one on top of the other so when you sand and distress the guitar they both come through and look real nice
Ah yeah, that't be really cool!
That is incredible. Wow
I love wood working and guitars. AWESOME video.
Nice! Thanks a lot man'
I would love for you to revisit this build and do another guitar!
I think I’ve watched this video 100 times.
I don't play anything but wow this is making me thing about it. Looks great!
Thank you..wanna get my son a guitar. he pawned his fender, his amp and peddles to feed us last February. this video helped.. hopefully I can afford to build him one for Christmas
Love this, totally stumbled on your channel looking for headboard DIYs, I find your videos really soothing and satisfying seeing things come together, and I have no clue about carpentry (even though I really wish I did), your creations are really inspiring. Thanks!!
That's awesome!! Thanks a lot! You can always start with something simple!
Modern Builds for sure I will, thank you. If you were to suggest one tool I purchase that will do a lot of jobs to get me going what would that be? Was thinking maybe a jig saw?? So much stuff you seem to need 😀😀 luckily we recently bought a place that used to be owned by a little old dude that was a frequent DIYer there's a workshop setup downstairs I need to make good use of I'm his memory! I have drills n the usual toolbox stuff but am thinking bigger 😅😅 is it sad to get excited about one day owning a belt sander?
I can't wait for the next guitar if you really make the new one now that you know to make it, please let me know, I would love to create mine one too. GREAT WORK!!!
Great Job Mike., can't wait for the next one!
Sweet! thanks man
Love the guitar Mike, can't wait til you make your next one!! Tunes were great too!!
Thanks dude!
Cool, man. Great work.
Hi Mike
How are you?
Fantastic your job and You play the guitar very well.

:) greetings from germany
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it
Awesome! Keep it up!
I love this concept. Props on the modern baseball album.
Awesome jam !!
Loved the project. Will do in 3-4 months can you tell the measurments of the wood?
I was very pleased to see how the guitar is made of wood!
Cool build. Adding the music really helps tell the story.
sweet!! Thanks a lot man
I'm sure someone commented about the neck pocket, so I'm sure you know why it didn't work out. I'll just leave that alone. Lol I enjoy your furniture videos, ran across this. I started building guitars a few years back. Very therapeutic for me. Nice work.
Yeah! It was a good learning experience for the next one. It was a lot of fun
Nice, really out of the box for a 2by4 project !!
Thanks a lot man!
OMG!! Im so glad you did this. This is amazing!!
Thanks Sam!!
That's awesome!
Love it!
Loving your channel Mike!!!
Great project, also diggin a lot the music, ill love to hear more

Pretty dope dude! I love the fact that you did it with scrap, that's just badass.
Haha! Thanks a lot man!!
Love seeing these music related projects, keep up the awesome work Mike!
Right on!! Hopefully more to come
Digging the Modern Baseball record!
Hell Yeah!
great job. I have a couple of suggestion builds. How about a suana, wooden bowls and cooking utensils. Hope that helps!
Mike (Mark), you made this look stupid easy. Well done, brother.
Haha! It really wasn't as tough as I was expecting. obviously it wasn't perfect, but it definitely made me more confident to make a nicer one
Looks awesome. I think it needs some warn stickers too. Keep up the good work! 😀
that's an awesome guitar!
this is way cool. you're so talented.
Haha, thanks a lot
Awesome man!!! It looks sweet.. This is definitely the most unique build for the challenge that I've seen
Also required the most additional parts haha!
I find this so impressive...well done.
Thanks a lot man!
Stumbled across this, you're awesome. Keep it up!
Thanks a lot Kris! Will do
Very nice project
Use a strip of veneer to shim the neck pocket. Get the shim cut to size, wrap neck in cling film (the super thin plastic you wrap sandwiches and cover plated meals with, I can't remember what americans call this) and glue the veneer into place using wrapped neck as a clamp.
We just call it plastic wrap. We keep some names pretty simple
Nice job! Looks cool!😎
Even though I don't play an instrument this was a great video to watch. Thanks for the great content as usual Mike!
That's awesome man! Thanks a lot
Fantastic job buddy, 👍🎸☠️👍
Thanks!!
Wow that is AWESOME!!!!
Thanks!!
Great build, Mark!
Haha! Thanks Matt
Inspirational. Did you notice any change in the guitar now that it has a JM body? I think it's what the Tele always wanted and I am glad for the Paranormal hybrids from Fender. Next one though - I will build myself.
High level, "Show de bola"!!!
Damn dude that intro music is fantastic.
good job dude it's awesome
Thanks man!
Definitely my favorite video from you. Even if this build wasn't my favorite, the editing and music seemed to fit your personality much better, and I love the new 'clamp' logo.
right on!! Thanks a lot
Yeah!!! My favorite project! Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
That's awesome!! Greetings from Oklahoma!

Thanks Sam!

Thanks Lauri!
This is so good! The guitar is amazing, if Fender dont offer you a job then I'll be shocked aha! Plus love that Holy Ghost vinyl you've got on your shelf there!
Haha Yeah right!! MOBO is dope!
this is amazing!
Thanks man!

I know! You're running out of time haha!
Modern Builds it's not funny😣 LOL
I decided on a design and a project got like 90% of the video shot today should be uploaded within the next 3 to 4 days that's my game plan anyways if not it'll definitely be in before the first but didn't you say I could give you twenty bucks to get a late entry LOL just kidding bro no for real I should have just enough time
. I had to jam out 16 cornhole games for this huge wedding in the order is due on June 1st.😥 got those done earlier this afternoon and started shooting at the rates and dinner have a good one bro good stuff on this last podcast I like the hypothetical question segment itsfunny
JazzCaster. Nice.
Thanks Dave!
+100
telestang
just made my own guitar a few weeks ago.... had to figure al this stuff out by myself, if only by then i knew you were planning on doing the same thing👌😅😂
This is pretty cool mang! Like you said...few mistakes here and there but I'm pretty sure you'll do great next time! 👍👍👍
Very cool Mike. Although not perfect, I think it is "perfect".
haha! Thanks a lot!
Great work! I miss your old song.
Great build, how's it holding up after a couple of years? I'm currently in the process of building my first guitar body, a bit of a weird offset shape. Don't have a router so I used hardwood marine ply and cut all my cavities into each layer using a jigsaw and files then glued them together. Hope to have a video up sometime in the next few weeks.
love to see holy ghost by modern baseball chillin on your bookcase
Really cool!!!
Thanks a lot!
Nice build Mike! You probably know this already, but put mineral spirits on your pattern and it will pull right off. Sanding a pattern off is really difficult. I enjoy your videos, thanks for sharing.
I didn't know that!! Thanks for letting me know dude
Good job.
