Age of Empires, released on October 26, 1997, was the first game in the series, as well as the first major release from Ensemble Studios.It was one of the first history-based real-time strategy games made, utilizing the Genie game engine. GameSpot described it as a mix of Civilization and Warcraft. The game gives players a choice of 12 civilizations to develop from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. The expansion pack, The Rise of Rome, published by Microsoft on October 31, 1998, introduced new features and four new civilizations, including the Romans. Although the two games had contained many software bugs, patches resolved many of the problems.Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings, released on September 30, 1999, used the Genie game engine, and had gameplay similar to its predecessor. Age of Kings is set in the Middle Ages, from the Dark Ages to the Imperial Age. It allows players to choose one of 13 civilizations, from Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Microsoft published the expansion, The Conquerors, on August 24, 2000. It added new units and five new civilizations, including two Mesoamerican civilizations; the Maya and the Aztec.The Age of Kings was a bigger critical success than the first two games, with Game Rankings and Metacritic scores of 92%. Microsoft shipped out more than two million copies to retailers, and the game received numerous awards and accolades. Critics agreed that The Conquerors expanded well on The Age of Kings, though issues of unbalanced gameplay were raised. The Age of Kings and The Conquerors won the 2000 and 2001 "Computer Strategy Game of the Year" awards from the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, respectivelyAge of Empires III, released on October 18, 2005, was built on an improved version of the Age of Mythology game engine with the most significant changes being the updated graphics engine and the inclusion of the Havok physics middleware engine. The game is set in the period between 1421 and 1850, and players can choose one of eight European nations. The game introduced a large number of features, such as home cities. Described by Ensemble Studios as "an important support system to your efforts in the New World," home cities helped provide the player with resources, equipment, troops, and upgrades. They could be used across multiple games, and upgraded after each battle; it was compared to a role-playing game character by Ensemble Studios. The first expansion to Age of Empires III, The WarChiefs, was released October 17, 2006. Most gameplay changes in the expansion pack were small, but it introduced three new civilizations, with a focus on Native Americans. Most notable was the introduction of the WarChief unit. The second expansion, The Asian Dynasties, went on sale October 23, 2007. It was a jointly developed product; Big Huge Games helped Ensemble Studios develop the game, with Brian Reynolds joining Bruce Shelley as lead designer.

The reason, why I made this video with all my heart was simply to show my gratitude towards this beloved game series and Microsoft for making it at the first place (Only reason why I love Microsft brand) back in 1990's. I started playing this game when I was 5 years-old, and since then till date I play and enjoy this game each and every time because it has something new and different in store in every match. This game was all my childhood.

Well, maybe the graphics look silly for some fans, but I agree with Tempires: Aoe-online was the best Aoe game. It goes back to Aoe2 mechanics, but with the best features of Aoe3. If, one day, Aoe4 is realeased something similar to Aoe-online, I would be pleased.
Luiz Ricardo Paiva Santiago I dont know about "some", if by that u meant a lot then we have some common ground ;-) sometime combining 2 previeous good things wasn't a great idea at all, people like playing competitively dont like the idea of spending time grabbing tech for the civs.
I gotta agree, AoE Online is my favorite out of the series.

I believe Age of Empire Online is by far the best if we consider over all performance of how the game system works! Maybe the only drawback somehow the graphics not appealing to others compared to AoE 3. With it's wide variety of game mechanism, Tech Tree, Gear System, PVP Gear mode & ungeared mode Quests & Quest rewards, online Market Trading between players, PVP Arena, Vanity Gears,, Advisors, Consumables, Blueprints, Recipes, Materials,, Quest Hall, Personal City beautification of different civilizations, & so much hall. THIS TAKES ME SOOOO BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD! Aoe 1 was one my first Strategy games back in the days and I remember it often being compared with "Die Siedler" (The Settlers) and Command and conquer. I still remember when I played this game for the first time and how I realised that clicking on the trees and on the coast makes your guys collect stuff and you can build a whole village, what an awesome feeling! Then age of kings came out and it was so interesting so see als those improvements and for me this game is until today still "the new Age of emires". Can't believe AoE came out 21 yrs ago. Still played it with a friend in multiplayer mode a couple of years ago.

I think the Steam Version works well.. apart from its lags in the Multiplayer and its problems with the Mapsize "Epic" from The Forgotten. A HD Remake from the very first AoE would be nice

This AoE2 still has the best graphics! So nostalgic and gorgeous design. I don't know, those other new games don't have the beauty of the AoE2 and don't have the amazing age (kings) that AOE2 has to fight against another friend. My still now i realy love this game

You also forgot the spin off Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds . it was too developed by ensemble in 2001.It was basically retextured Aoe 2. But was still fun as hell.

I been playing AOE since 2004 when i was a freshman in high school..ever since then i felled in love with this game. However, after zone gaming was cancel i stop playing for a few years until finally was back on steam in HD edition.. Im 27 at the moment and still play this game. I know there a lot of people out there who can share similar stories and who probably i have played together on steam.
in Vietnam and china, there are hundred thousands people play AOE, However we just play AOE1, it is our passion, for me, i been playing AOE1 for 10 years,

I think AOE 2 is the most played one nowadays since it is considered the classic version with that amazing and realistic graphics from the middle ages. Its online community is even more than AOE 3. I never get bored from this game though I'm still considering myself a noob after I stopped playing the game 7 years. I was so happy when I knew about the HD version in steam for windows 8-10 and I was not hesitant to buy it.

AOEO in fact is a great game. After patches it has become highly enjoyable and with a lot of depth. The ultimate fate of this game is nothing but unfortunate. You may argue its cartoonist graphic but it's absolutely the right thing to do if the game needs to be video card friendly
