Unlike fingerprints, hooks can be the same. For an example, take 'under pressure' by queen - the hook is the bass line at the start. Vanilla Ice took that hook and created 'ice, ice baby'. As a kid I would get excited that it was Vanilla Ice....as an adult it is the EXACT opposite, lol.
You know how you're hanging out talking with someone and there's music playing somewhere in the background and either you or the other person says "No, wait! wait! I love this part" Well...everybody loves that part of that song... that's the hook. It draws you in...that's why it's called a "hook". Hooks Explained...yw
Song#1 Katy Perry, Roar Song#2 AC/DC, Back in black Song#3 Don't recognise it Lyric#1 Taylor Swift, We are never ever getting back together Lyric#2 Don't know band, Shut up and dance Lyric#3 Don't recognise it Lyric#4 Bon Jovi, Livin' on a prayer
Hi I was wondering do hooks have to be in the chorus of a song every time, when I think of one it usually happens to be in the chorus or can it be at any point of a song?
Usually at the end of the chorus is the power spot for the hook, but having hooks in every part of your song (verse, chorus, bridge, etc..) is what makes the whole song catchy and brings the listens back!
I thought a hook was where the song's going one way, and then suddenly the rythm switches up like a car shifting gear. The first time you hear it, it sends a tingle down your spine, and then everytime you hear that song again you're just waiting for it. The best example i can think of is that scene in Dumb & Dumber when they listening to Bohemian Rapsody by Queen. When the hook drops they all start headbanging.
After I Learned What A "Hook" Was, I Went To DEAR MOMMA By TUPAC After Listening To That Song I Then Went Over To THE MERKINS PARODY Of R.I.P. TUPAC DEAR MOMMA. As Both Song's Played The Chorus We're Exactly The Same And That's What "The Hook" Was For Both Song's.
Good question! A guitar riff or "lick" is generally a distinctive melody used as a lead part or in solos whereas a guitar hook is a melody that the song keeps returning to. However, I understand why you may question because the two are often used interchangeably by players.
Maybe I didn't get it. But if a hook is something that is characteristic of the song and easy to remember... does that mean hooks are subjective? And if so isn't the whole song: lirics and music one big hook?
When he was talking about "Hooks" what if A band used the song beat for 2 different song's: 1. 6 Flags 2. Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom, That band used the same song beat for these two songs
A hook is well groomed periodic phrase that is burnt as a strong neuron pathway, often masked by a familiar reference and resonant with DNA hence ethnicity...not to be confused with 'Homok' which is a delicious Thai dish :-)
A hook is what makes me dislike most modern pop music. It's usually just a single syllable or a couple notes repeated over and over again. Sure it's catchy, but its also annoying as hell. "Umbrella ella ella ella eh eh eh eh eh eh" Memorable and enjoyable are not the same thing.
A hook is a moment in a song)(lyrical or musical) which you remember and enjoy after the song is played. Time saved.
so a hook can be an entire chorus as well?
Unlike fingerprints, hooks can be the same.

Thank you kind sir
The entire cardiacs discography is a hook
Thank you soooo much
a hook is a symbol that redirects your brain to recall the song its connected to... its literally something like a meme.
Super well said!!
i like that…”something like a meme”
This is what's missing from modern music. I was trying to explain this to my students. Thank you, now I have a lesson for them.
Amazing thing about hooks: even if you dont know the song you can tell which part is memorable.
Lyrics can't really exist outside songs, so it's again tunes that make them memorable.
This video is really informative and helpful and...fun! thank you :)

So would a hook be subjective in a way or is it a general consensus of what the hook of a song is?

I need help with how to write hooks in film music. How are hooks composed in film music?
Hooks in film music come more as instrumental musical riffs more so than lyrical or vocal melodies.!
After I Learned What A "Hook" Was,
I Went To DEAR MOMMA By TUPAC After Listening To That Song I Then Went Over To THE MERKINS PARODY Of R.I.P. TUPAC DEAR MOMMA.
As Both Song's Played The Chorus We're Exactly The Same And That's What "The Hook" Was For Both Song's.
What’s the difference of riff and hook in guitar?

1. 6 Flags
2. Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom,
That band used the same song beat for these two songs
What were the first 3 songs that were played?
gold team rules thank you ive heard these songs before but don’t know the name lol
Surely a lyrical hook is just the chorus line? Are there any good examples you can think of where this isn't the case?
Twilight by ELO is famous for having a bajillion hooks. I think the song has two different choruses and two different bridges.
What’s the difference between chorus and hook?
BIG
Exactly what I'm wondering
Example
Taylor Swift - Blank Space
Hook - But i got a blank space baby and i'll write your name
its like a start of a chorus or ends in chorus outro
Song #3 is lost on me
