  • Railway traction is always up for development and new ideas are always around the corner but a trip to Ireland brought one of the strangest ideas to the UK shores and Brunel knew he had to try it!

Criminally low view count for such an interesting little video. Please don’t lose heart because of that fact when making videos for your project. They really are charming to watch and will serve as a body of work for when people do discover them.

"The passengers had to get out and push"
Ha ha, it sounds like something out of Casey Jones (kid's tv show from the 1950's)

I don't think this was very well thought out. Leather seals which was bound to give them trouble; power houses every three miles (that's pretty close together) munching up tons of coal; and the issue with the points. How did they cope with junctions with those pipes?

Can you imagine if the new Class 800s were ordered with pistons as well as diesel and electric power?

The pressure behind the piston remained at atmospheric pressure and was not increased. The movement of the coach was due to nature abhoring a vacuum, no matter how small. The amount of force on the piston was solely down the pressure difference between the two sides.

Coïncidence, I was only discussing this with some French friends yesterday! Good thing for us steam fans that they only had leather for seals back in the day. Imagine no locomotives! No A4's, Boy Boy, Tornado...😮
    Brilliant video as always !

My nana lived near the old Dalkey atmospheric station. In fact, one of her neighbours lived in the old atmospheric house. Both died last year unfortunately.
