    Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I appreciated the thought that went into sharing the symptoms that led to your diagnosis and solution, including the parts you ordered. I also appreciate your narration skills and that you were working with your dad. The extra part about how you set the seal was a bonus. Nicely done.

    You never want to start the engine without a good water supplies to the lower unit pump your impeller looks to have ran dry damaging the rubber impeller and also burns the flapper backwash protector off that pin you found ! Good luck 👍🇺🇸

    An overheating problem can be many things, if you fixed the problem by replacing the impeller then your lucky. That pin you found that held the flapper in the exhaust manifold tells me the flappers that keep water from back flushing into the manifold are worn or burn out. I can hear the pieces of broken flapper inside the manifold of my boat. When they overheat those flappers bust apart. I've replaced the impeller on my mercruiser as well as the pump housing. The shaft seal on the housing was won out badly. At an idle the temp gauge doesn't even move, however when I get back out on the lake I will be lucky if the overheating problem has went away.

    Im not sure if you noticed but the seal around the shift shaft in the lower unit looks cracked at the front edge. Might be where water could get into your lower drive. You can replace the whole piece to the newer version for about $25.

    Thanks for this video. So clear on your issue and how you fixed it. I have exactly the same problem, and now will go after the impeller. Thanks again! 🇨🇦👍🏼 Subscribed for more.

    My water pump looked like yours fins staying bent from age but rubber looking good like yours. I don't see anybody on UA-cam checking water pressure and flow up at the thermostat housing of all the houses going to that it is the one on the passenger side front, so to check to see if you have a water pump issue pull that hose off and look to see if is pumping volume and pressure?? on mine i flipped the water pump upside down and forced the fins in the clockwise direction like they have to be with needle nose pliers and it now works better than new, but i have other problems there is restriction in the water flow somewhere due to rust blockage, i even took off the water pump hose and tried to blast it clean with water pressure from the city water pressure hose and no luck yet. One more small thing that speedo plastic hookup that is fraggle just put in a brass threaded niple from the hardware store.

      Up date, My boat is like new now when it was overheating i took the hose off the bottom of the exhaust manifold put it in a 5 gallon bucket started the engine and the temp went right down to normal so the problem was cold lake water could not get into cool the engine because rust in manifolds were blocking water from exiting i was able to clean the rust out with air hose and water hose

    That rod belongs to your water shutter in your exhaust. IT IS IMPORTANT! The rubber degraded and the rod is all that was left. You have a v-8? 2 shutters.
    They're on the top of your y-pipe under the 4" dia hoses
    Shutters prevent water from coming in your engine cylinders when you come off a plane the wave doesnt shove into your engine.

    • @Biggyniner
      @Biggyniner 5 років тому +1

      It will also stop water from coming back into your engine, via the exhaust from a vacuum condition or if your engine diesels when you turn it off

    Thank you, sir, for posting a video that supposedly wasn’t going to have details. Lol. The details you did include taught me a lot about outdrives. My speedo doesn’t work and now I think I know why. I am tackling these projects on my new-to-me motor boat this weekend. Did you go with oem parts?Thank you to the other boaters’ replies too. I learned a lot here. Fair winds & calm waters! (Yah I am a sailor now in a motor boat.)

    Not good to run it with low water flow. You can warp the head with too much heat.

      Before you took the bottom end off of that unit did you make sure that you were in the forward position on the throttle it is important or else you will have to take everything apart again and start over

    • @cabincruiserlittlebigtime8445
      @cabincruiserlittlebigtime8445  7 років тому +3

      Brent Soucier sorry for the late response I just saw your comment. It's a shutter pin. their rubber flappers in the exhaust that keep water from flowing backward into the engine. when they wear out the pin/hinge makes it's way thru the exhaust to the lower unit. hope this helps.

    • @drhandy3376
      @drhandy3376 7 років тому

      Brent Soucier the small rod you are holding appears to be an alignment tool used to line up the hole in the gaskets and the housing when reinstalling the water pump housing and may have been left their when the water pump was last replaced

    • @alecfowler7147
      @alecfowler7147 5 років тому +1

      That pin is from your exhaust baffles shutter . ..pull the exhaust down tubes, (easy to do) and check in your Y tube . I'm thinking they may need replaced . ( its a butterfly assembly to stop back wash water from entering the engine when stopping the boat), this could hinder cooling if the rubber parts come loose also

      I’ve had a similar issue to this guy with a similar engine my thermostat is at 142 I removed it all together for now because it was kind of sticking but I believe if the water pump isn’t supplying enough water, it wouldn’t matter if the thermostat is open or closed.

    • @dale7164
      @dale7164 4 роки тому

      No because the water has to get pumped there first by the outdrive!

    • @sailingsportsandetc.2081
      @sailingsportsandetc.2081 4 роки тому

      DLE From The CLE Yeah, if the pump isn’t supply enough water, even if the thermostat is operational, it would still overheat just not as severely with the thermostat operational vs not.
