Great video of how to repair this issue. I've followed this to repair my wife's mini cooper s 2017 auto. I got new springs from ebay for £6 for 5. My centre console was different to the one shown in the video but using some other videos and a schematic I figured out how to remove it. BMW don't do this type of repair and you have to replace the whole gear select mechanism at a cost of approx £540.00 plus labour so around £800 to repair at the dealer. So £6 for springs and 4hrs of my time its well worth following this repair option.
Thank you for this! My wife’s mini coop (same model, yr) just got the same issue. Followed your UA-cam video step by step and it worked! Pretty scary for the average car man like myself but we got it done. Thanks man.
Great video - took me about 2 hours start to finish. Got 2 springs from Ali Express for about $4 total cost of repair. Center console removal is slightly different in a Mini (not Clubman), but easy enough to figure out. Dumbest design ever, the spring is used to move the little lever, which has a magnet on one end which moves underneath a reed switch to tell the car that the shifter is all the way into the Park position. A micro switch touching the shifter would have been so much simpler. Oh well, saved $1,000.00 with this DIY project.
Thank you for sharing. I have just got the same problem in my clubman and wanne fix it by myself. Do I have to disconnect the 12v battery before I start?Thank you.
Thank you so much. At least I now know the source of the problem. I will be charged hugely at the BMW main dealers for this. Does a main dealer have to do this as specialists ir could my local garage undertake it at less cost?
Wow great video! Any ideas on how long I can get away with driving the car while getting this fault? I feel the parking break engage when I use it (I always use it every single time I park). I’m not sure I can do this repair myself unfortunately and if I screw it up, I have no car. I can’t believe they used something so cheap and small for such an important part. Thanks mini…
You will be fine especially putting on the parking brake. I recommend using the parking brake while this fault is occurring just in case. With that said if it’s just a broken spring inside of the shifter assembly like all of the ones with this fault I have seen. It is actually fully in park just not sensing it. You could potentially drive it for years that way. 😅
I was thinking the same thing. I can fix basic things and look for videos like this to decide if it is within my spectrum. I think this is pretty easy...if you can get to the part. A little worried about getting to it and putting it back together. I've read about it some, and it looks like a very common problem in multiple years for BMW and Mini. Frustrating when they know they have a problem and don't change it. I'll probably just drive it and make sure to use the parking break. I tested it on an incline and it is certainly going into park.
I decided to go ahead and fix mine because it was due for an inspection and I didn't want this error to cause it to fail. I first tried to replace the spring, but it was not as easy as it looked for me to get the spring back together and functioning. I put it back together and to my horror, still had the error. A new shifter is $600, I found one on ebay for $200. Swapped it out and I'm good to go. I found in my Mini it was easier to go ahead and remove the seats for more easy access to the screws. Nice video.
@@bobbylane589 that was one of my fears as well. Or worse, I’d screw up so badly and not get it back together to make it drivable. It’s my daily driver/only car. I took it to the dealer and they gave me a “brake” on the price, a good will cost of $700 since I agreed to let them do my pads and rotors all around so I was out the door with a new gear shifter and brakes for $2000. Mehhhh.
@@pjevans854 Luckily this is my daughter's car and she is away at college, so I knew that I had time in case I got in too deep. I was afraid that is what the dealer would cost. Glad you got it going, that tone is ANNOYING!
Could one, in theory, reinforce the part of the spring that bends with electrical tape or something in an attempt to keep it from bending again in a couple years? Or would this cause a different issue?

this guys out here saving me from the 1800$ quote from the dealership to fix this!
The information was spot on. Thank you for sharing. Anyone with a mini or bmw should follow your videos.👍

The engineer that designed that spring mechanism should be banned from the profession.

My wife's car has this message. Good video but since it does not affect the drivability of the car I will just live with it.
Thanks very much for this. An excellent guide. It took me a few hours but was very straightforward.

Definitely not a bad idea
Would this cause the car to shut off? Was driving and as I slowed down and as the car went over a bump it shut down.
eBay isn't listing anymore, what's the part number?

The dealership replaces the shifter assembly for this concern.
Great video but terrible lighting.

would it harm the battery or anything else just to keep driving with this error? I am not able to pay 2000-3000 at the moment
did you ever get an answer to this question? I have the same question...
it just makes the car hard to sell on.
Hi, I have a car BMW and i have got the same problem. is there any chance you can fix that for me.
Looks like that this shifter spring was mass produced and went into a lot of European cars.. my 2017 BMW WITH 110K KMS sprung the same issue!
Could this prevent my car from starting
Great video, love your work 👌
