Honestly, this is exactly how I reacted when I read this from the books. There's even a scene in the books where Percy stops Thalia from turning to the Dark Side by essentially saying "Your dad totally loves you, just remember how he saved you by turning you into a plant and stole years of your life away?" Somehow that worked. I would've snapped.

Percy here finding flaws in the book he is the protagonist in. In defence though, I will say that Thalia turning into a tree not only provided shelter for life and all the other stuff that a tree does, her magic gave protection to half bloods as well.
