    Agbero means “check-in clerk”
    Ero is “passenger-current
    Iro is “liquid-current”
    Agbe is a collector
    e.g. tank placed at edge of a roof for rain water collection purposes. Or “roof gutter”
    Area boy means “locality tout” because they are notorious. e.g. indigenous American city revenue collectors in streets of downtown New-Orleans,Louisiana.

    The Agbero are really a big problem in Lagos. They are mostly around the yellow bus. Normally, they are supposed to work for the bus garage and the money collected through ticket sales help to manage these boys and the garage areas. Things fall apart when people allegedly said politicians started to use them as thugs during the elections and thus they started growing wings to the point where they had become uncontrollable.

    In 1 day a bus driver is meant to pay for a least 6-10 tickets for him to operate his bus, that is why they try to evade the ones they can

    Area boys are very important in the transporting system of Nigeria, although they have their pros and cons (in which the cons outweighs the pro in most cases).
    The usually carry along two types of ticket; the state owned ticket and the union ticket (this belongs to the association which all area boys are members of).
    The state ticket money is meant to be remitted to the State govt for the maintenance and repair of the roads and garage; while the union ticket money is used to cater for the expenses of the union (salary payment, ticket printing, uniforms etc.)

    The reason why those drivers don't wanna pay it's actually because the money does them no good in return
    I mean bad roads
    No street lights
    No security
    And I believe this are where those money meant to be spent on 😢😢😢

    It is legit and the money is for the govt but most people don’t know we would rather just believe the money is for the area boys and that’s why the drivers don’t want to pay at times but it’s a compulsory govt levy on the yellow bus transports

    This actually happens only in Lagos. Most of those taxes given to the government doesnt actually flow to the economy. We have corrupt a government. Also this method is not supposed to be used in this day and age. We have parks but these agbero guys are normally on the road. There is also no transparency to the public on what they use these taxes for.

    It's all fraud... one ticket for lagos state, and the other ticket is collected unbehalf of the national union transport which the agberos are part..of finally, all these monies collected are supposed to be used for development but unfortunately none of this happens the money is embezzled, it is a fraudulent cycle that repeats itself over and over😢

      @@bamideleolaseni8750 it's taxes, they're meant to be collected anyways, the embezzling of funds is a different matter on his own, the problem is it's meant to be digitalised

    • @Jadani6489
      @Jadani6489 4 місяці тому +1

      Personally, I like to believe it isn’t all fraudulent (We’re in Nigeria so part of it probably is). But i think it’s an initiative to get these street boys working and off the streets instead of getting involved in illegal activities. This job opportunity was created especially for them. And it’s not all bad that they have an association that pockets some of it. The government receives a bigger cut but the rest of it can be salaries for these guys working. So its a legit job

    Don't worry about the manners they are doing it.
    Nigerians are naturally stubborn in nature.
    Sometimes every living human being in Nigeria need some aggressiveness in order for them to do what they ought to have done.
    It may not be normal but it is the reality of living in Nigeria.
    The aggressiveness if used in good endeavors, it could make millions.
    Look at the Nigerians living in US, UK and across Asia Countries.
    We are aggressive and hungry to study and also to make money in every chosen field.

    it doesn't go to government, that is why some drivers don't want to pay, it's going to their masters and their masters pay them at the end of the day, it's a day job not mouthly, if you go you get paid, if you don't no payment for you that's all,

    We have area boys all over different parts of different Nigerian rian cities. They take additional fees from drivers. The way they do it makes them suitable for crime. Some people lose phones and other items at the bus stops. They can be very unstable in their behaviours. Today, they are nice and even generous, another day, one boy can empty your pocket without your knowledge

  • @lawalolatunde324
    @lawalolatunde324 4 місяці тому +1

    They do this in almost all the State in Nigeria, especially the private commercial busses, The reason they are aggressive is because the chairman can pick them out Job. Most of the remittance goes to the state government,
    Sometimes in a pack

    Gosh, Lagos, this video is actually giving me anxiety that I had to watch in two parts.
    With all the good things Las Gidi has, the stress level is just way too high.
    Such an aggressive environment.
    The system needs to be sanitised and mafe more orderly, even if it us not digitalised completely to save jobs imho
    If agberos are taken off this "duty" it will be worse as they will be forced into straight criminality if they are not retrained and out inti paying jobs.
    They need to overhaul the "system" though.

    I honestly don't think they remit those cash to the government tbh
    And the violence sometimes is just something else
    Plus there's agencies that conduct traffic so where did they get that job?🌚

  • @tomijohn5009
    @tomijohn5009 4 місяці тому

    Let me break it down… Agebro is definitely AREA BOYS, area boys are organised gangs and they mostly recruit touts, street muchins because those are the only people willing to engage is such degrading jobs to find ends meets. The association work indirectly for the state government by remitting money “levy” to the state government. Now the problem comes from the fact that it’s widely believed that they don’t remit the funds to the government and if they do just a little and mostly packet it to themselves and the chairman of the parks and enriches their pockets. Another major problem is they take too much money from drivers without being accounted because they can’t see why they pay. No good roads or any sort of support to be paying such funds. Bye

    • @tomijohn5009
      @tomijohn5009 4 місяці тому +1

      Explaining further agebro now tagged has area boys but originally means “agba ero” which means “receivers of commuters”. This system was created to take levy, toll for the purpose of building infrastructures for the commuters and drivers. However no such thing is happening and government can’t discontinue it because they need the support of these street muchins for their campaigns during election to do their dirty works.

    First it's legit, though they're usually aggressive,and those buses are registered, that's why it's advisable to take a bus at the park cos they're registered, let me tell you something, majoity of us Yorubas living in south west Nigeria trust these Agberos than the police officers, they safeguard the community, though there are bad eggs amongst them, and they're different from the homeless folks that rob on streets, though the present president is trying to digitalize and streamline it, to prevent fraud and limit agberos

  • @Yorubaman
    @Yorubaman 3 місяці тому

    Everything about this video is a lie.
    Conductors exist all over the country. Agbero js not a Yoruba word that means Area Boys its literal meaning is “one who calls passengers to a vehicle”

  • @Emmexton_01
    @Emmexton_01 4 місяці тому +1

    Actually agbero doesn’t mean area boys, what it actually means in Yoruba context, these are people who look for passengers going to the location where the driver is heading too, then after getting passengers, he tends to collect money from d driver, but if the driver refuses, then that’s where the problem is.
    Am actually not a lagosian, but with the little idea I have
    This all I can say
