Inner Space with Blake McLeod

Inner Space, a new monthly web series co-curated by the Inner Space Youth Advisory and AGO staff, welcomes artists from across Canada as they present personal tours of their studios. Giving a platform to young curators aged 16-25 to work with artists from their communities, Inner Space aims to make visible and celebrate a new generation of Canadian artists. A new video will be released each month.
This month we meet artist Blake McLeod, a Cree nonbinary, queer artist living and working in Mohkinstsis, Treaty 7 Territory. They were curated by Emily Donville of the AGO Youth Advisory. “Blake is an essential fixture of the Calgary arts & culture scene, using their art practice to communicate to folks who have ever felt “othered” that they are not alone. Through various mediums- illustration, graphic design, photo, video, broadcasting, music and paint - Blake attempts to communicate the core concept of humanity and community, specifically to queer audiences. “I have had the incredible opportunity to witness first-hand their dedication to the community through their work as a radio DJ at CJSW 90.9 FM, and I am delighted to be showcasing their studio space through this project,” says curator Emily Donville.
Artist Bio:
Blake McLeod (they/them) is a Cree nonbinary queer artist living and working in Mohkinstsis, Treaty 7 Territory. Through the means of illustration, graphic design, photo, video and radio, they strive to build an intimate community for folks to feel free and safe to be who they are. With a diverse background involving a BFA in Drawing from AuArts, technical training from SAIT’s New Media Production & Design program, and a multitude of DIY queer events and workshops in Calgary, McLeod is determined to have folks know - they are not alone.
Curator Bio:
Emily Donville is a 4th-year student pursuing a BA in Communication & Media studies at the University of Calgary. Born and raised in Calgary, Emily is a fervent supporter of the arts and hopes to one day pursue a career in the arts & culture sector. She is currently the chair of CJSW Radio's Board of Directors and has been hosting 7-10 Split, a weekly alternative music radio program since May 2020. As a communications student, Emily is fascinated by the intersection of digital media with race and gender. She largely draws on her studies for inspiration in her art practice, alongside her interest in punk and DIY. Never one to remain idle, her latest endeavours have involved printmaking, beading and chain maille.
