It's strange how Floyd gets no credit for fighting at his natural weight. Especially in a boxing/MMA era where guys gain up to 20+ pounds after weigh-ins.
Floyd was hungry in his youth..and that is why he is one of a kind, that Drive made him great. You hear similar stories from guys like Kobe, Jordan, and Magic etc...they just have something that cant be taught.

You can tell Floyd learned a lot from Whitaker and he must've took a lot of Pernell's tricks, defense style and moves and added them to his arsenal. Just by watching them fight you can clearly see how one inspired the style of the other.
Whitaker n Floyd have different styles.Floyd style is highly functional, utterly crisp/sharp, with a wonderful punching technique, top level shoulder rolling, parrying, or even simple ducking and swaying when he gets comfortable. He mostly doesn't move more than he needs to, and he has quite a professional but simple potent approach in the ring. He likes to save energy, With quick, economical motions, it's business like and he breaks people down bit by bit, like a surgeon. His style Is actually very old, he likes to play chess with his opponents. He like Hopkins, they get opponents to fight at their pace, because of this their style is more Robotic looking, Floyd style is about taking low risk as possible, it's like a business man, He's like BILL GATES, it's more business than fighting. This has to be one of the best Mayweather interviews ever. It's rare to see him be so candid, not be bragging about money and not answering questions directly. This was awesome.

Wow! Floyd boxed Pernell Whitaker, And Showed Much Respect And This Was Back In The Day...No Wonder Floyd Is TBE He Gave You The Blueprint On How Stay A Champion
Easily the best interview I've ever seen of Floyd. It's not very often that he goes into detail about how he developed into such a good fighter and how much he enjoys the art of boxing. I'd much rather hear him talk about these kinds of things than to hear him go on and on about money nonstop like he usually does. I love boxing.
Patrick Skehill he a real boxer, disciplined don't let that money act fool you, it's just an act to promote himself. Hes a pure boxer, no drinking partying girl chasing, very disciplined dude that's why hes undefeated
Patrick Skehill nothing wrong with that , especially when you see the mans true nature of who he really is and who he had to become just to get people in the ring with him. It’s sad really. Us guys and gals that’s been with him his whole career know he’s worked and deserves everything he has.
Patrick Coleman Yes that's one fight I will never forget. Whitaker fought some tough people. I love may weather too but besides a old manny pacqua has he fought anyone good ? Lol.
Great interview. Floyd LOVES boxing. He remembers all this stuff like it was yesterday. He is like a little kid explaining how he has been influenced by the older fighters. He definitely found his true calling in life. I would think he has even a greater purpose in life after boxing. God only knows. He has the money to support his family and children.
the implication that Whitaker was easy work for 17 year old Mayweather is bullshit. Whitaker has the same body as Mayweather and was a master of defense . I'm sad Mayweather couldn't admit hes more similar to pernell than anyone else
Love this side of Floyd. Born to box. Rent-A-Center furniture, Doritos and water. He deserves where he’s at today. I’m happy I got to witness his career.
Dave Conrad Of all the dumbass things I have heard said about Floyd is the comment that "he's picking his words carefully." WTF??? I have made a living speaking - and a good exciting one too - TALKING!!!!!!! And I think Floyd's conversation is fluid, beautifully cadenced, dramatic and eloquent! You need to GET A LIFE LITTLE STEVIE!!!!!!
One of the greatest interview one can ever have of one of the greatest fighter in the sport. Savour this interview. 20 years from now, this will be classic.
Floyd looks young. Could pass for being early/mid twenties easy. Still got those young cat reflexes and skills too, just wish he put a bit more sting into his punches like he used to and just be that bit more aggressive like he used to.

It’s nice to see really, he’s got all the stories which you know are absolutely true. Shame people didn’t see more of him like this. Defo one of the best to ever do it.
The interviewer ruined the interview by saying, "I heard it was easy work for you" because Floyd was about to explain what the sparring session was like, which is what we were all waiting to hear, but when dude said that, Floyd had no choice but to respond with "I always respect a champion" and that was it, nothing about the sparring.

@@davidjamisonnmmeto603 I'm not a Floyd fan, but I do respect what he said and how he said it here. I just wouldn't think that one of the greatest fighters to do it would be "easy work" for him is all. I consider Chavez to be superior to Floyd on the scale of greats and Whitaker beat the breaks off him and then was given a ridiculous draw out of it.
@@shmokey59 1 plenty of boxers have moved more than Floyd in the ring and 2 there are plenty of boxers with heavier output than Floyd, he is just more efficient with his punches. You honestly think that Pernell Whitaker, the man who was robbed on 3 out of his 4 loses and beat a prime Chavez was outclassed by Floyd? Give me a break man
Whitaker said "he loves Floyd but he's no Pernell Whitaker." If they boxed for real Whitaker would've beat him just like he beat his Uncle. Stop it dude.
It will take some time but there will be a time when Floyd will be remembered as Legend. Right now he is still too cocky and people dont want to give him credit because of it but in like 15-20yrs people will admit to his greatness.
Rick People forget that Ali was hated most of his career also and didn’t get the recognition he truly deserved until after he retired and fell ill with Parkinson’s disease. Floyd will get his props at some point in time once people stop being blinded by the “Money” persona.
One thing I can always say about Floyd is that his success was generated by his hunger for personal gain and recognition. He also spoke about his Mother needing money for bills and the sacrifices he made plus the danger he put himself in to get where he is today. A lot of ppl thinks he’s selfish and I’m not saying I know him personally but I don’t believe that for a second. The man simply worked his ass off for everything he has and his drive for success is still showcased well after his retirement from the sport #FLOYDMAYWEATHERISTHEGOAT
Yooooo he telling a story but thing is you gotta read thru the lines...he's catching himself before he tells something that will mess up the boxing league...he's a great fighter but what he had to do....smh I'ma leave it at that
How refreshing to see Floyd actually talking honestly about stuff and properly answering questions instead of playing up to the camera. Fascinating to hear this kind of stuff. Perhaps he is finally growing up!
according to the interview, it was around 94 when mayweather was 17. no way in HELL did a 17 just have his way with whitaker in 94. they can tell that shit to someone that doesn't know any better.
When he started talking about being a kid, you can tell this is tuff he's been holding in for so long and been waiting to get off his chest... that was interesting to hear him talk about his experiences as a kid & how he reacted to his father's harsh words. People have no idea the pain it takes to overcome and use as fuel to be a true great. His childhood is the foundation to who he is today so that part of his stoey is very important for people to see in a documentary.
Ringside punching stats favored Mayweather heavily, crediting him with landing 207 of 481 punches to 122 of 587 for De La Hoya. Mayweather also landed more power punches than De La Hoya, outscoring him 138-82. De La Hoya threw a lot of punches that hit Floyd's arms. Floyd was hitting De La Hoya the whole fight with accurate punches to the face. The fight wasn't even close.
You guys know nothing about sparring. Floyd probly did take pernell. To school. Thats not saying floyd was better but sparring is part of training and theres no telling what kind of shape pernell was in at the time
Cedrick Williams and........... it could have gone the other way right?? pernell could have in this supposed sparring took floyd to school then right? NOBODY REALLY KNOWS. all speculations.
Not only that, but many of the greatest fighters will spar to your level. In his mind he's one of the greatest helping out a 17 year old kid. Pernell wouldn't try to light him up. Not to take away from Mayweather, but there's little point in trying to figure out who bested who, it's training.
Dude Pernell was much older then Floyd when they sparred of course a young HUNGRY Floyd put that work on him.. Let's not forget Pernell beat Roger Mayweather so there was Mayweather Family history there...
Not to mention, Sweet Pea was known for slacking off between fights and for certain "bad" habits. Add that to just sparring with some up and coming kid, knowing he had nothing to prove, you can almost be sure he wasn't in there at 100%. Still, looking good with him at any percent was saying something.
5:40 he was getting at an important life lesson but stopped just before saying it. When people are buying you everything you want they're going to be asking something of you down the road and better believe they'll want you to deliver.
No disrespect to Sweet P,one of the All timers, more heart than Floyd,BUT he often displayed behaviour that was far beneath him, showboating with his guard down on many occasions. That doesnt diminish his legacy as he obviously got away with it,but a little careless, took unneeded punishment at times.Floyd is pretty much dead man serious in the ring.
It's interesting that Floyd Mayweather loved boxing so much as he expressed here, as compared to the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson, who said on video that "I've never enjoyed boxing, it's just a business with me..", saying it was "barbaric", and that he was never a boxing fan (watching other fighters). Great champions are motivated in such different ways.
"Pernell is a guy who doesn't give out a lot of compliments. He didn't want to say anything about another fighter, because he didn't like the idea of anyone upstaging him. Throwing shade at chavez. Chavez was already in a bad place when he fought frankie anyway. That means nothing
No he wasn't
Huh, he called Chavez a legend. How is that throwing shade
I don't believe that Whitaker was "easy work" for Floyd. That is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard.
Hoop dreams, every athlete professional or not always believe they're the best, not knock him,but we know Floyd, even if he did he'll never admit to it,respect, but I'm from Norfolk, RIP lb 4 lb da best
@@davidjamisonnmmeto603 I'm not a Floyd fan, but I do respect what he said and how he said it here. I just wouldn't think that one of the greatest fighters to do it would be "easy work" for him is all. I consider Chavez to be superior to Floyd on the scale of greats and Whitaker beat the breaks off him and then was given a ridiculous draw out of it.
you gotta remember, no one moves as much as floyd. or has the stamina Floyd is better than you downplay him to be...trust me on that.
Give me a break man
@Greg M name what?
So basically he beat Sweet Pea and Randall and don't want to disrespect them by saying it. And I've never seen nor heard either of them say otherwise.
BFTB Boxing I wouldn’t be surprised if he beat Pernell neither. He was at the back end of his career.
Whitaker said "he loves Floyd but he's no Pernell Whitaker." If they boxed for real Whitaker would've beat him just like he beat his Uncle. Stop it dude.
Absolutely my favorite interview!
Great interviewer!
One my favorite interviews because he talks about his come up and his youth👊🏾💯👊🏾💯
Pernell fought roger.
Knocked Roger out
Floyd should make A documentary about his life I love hearing his life story
He's got really small hands. Master boxer though
It was cool to see him reflect on all of the changes he has been through and to never lose focus
Man he never took a break from Boxing. His entire life has basically been a training camp to preparw him for life and he won 50 times, lost 0
5 lost, do the res,stp skg him up ,yeah his defence was to run run so thats what he called it
man this was great to listen to, really inspirational
Yooooo he telling a story but thing is you gotta read thru the lines...he's catching himself before he tells something that will mess up the boxing league...he's a great fighter but what he had to do....smh I'ma leave it at that
Those cheeks got busted
The Great Priest you wild this Floyd not Sugar Ray and Tyson
Bs
5:47 that part says it all.
Man this is one great interview very interesting!!
Rest in eternal power Parnell sweet pea Whitaker one of the first pioneers of the Drunken Master style I salute you... Shaolin Temple
@toca world ari and gacha lmao rs
When he started talking about being a kid, you can tell this is tuff he's been holding in for so long and been waiting to get off his chest... that was interesting to hear him talk about his experiences as a kid & how he reacted to his father's harsh words.
People have no idea the pain it takes to overcome and use as fuel to be a true great. His childhood is the foundation to who he is today so that part of his stoey is very important for people to see in a documentary.
This is some legendary shit right here 💯
its good to see him like this. talking about what he loves, no gotcha questions, a respectable interview.
Mayweather one of the greats he has the best boxing iq in the game and he outboxes every fighter he fought u can't ask for any more
maidana 1
Castillo
Mayweather won both
mayweather won maidana 1,however castillo you could say he lost
Nah maidana won
+Fransisco Juarez 49-0
Beating a dude in sparring isn't saying anything. Mike Mcallum said the fight only begins in the 7th round.
Facts
You guys know nothing about sparring. Floyd probly did take pernell. To school. Thats not saying floyd was better but sparring is part of training and theres no telling what kind of shape pernell was in at the time
Cedrick Williams thats true
This nikka really went on a tangent after being asked a question about Whitaker, LOL
Floyd needs a book bro
Hey Johnny shut yo broke jealous ass up...
Jay Suttle 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ He obviously means a book about him. A autobiography. lol chill!
Nothing worse than a man that sounds like a jealous bitch! Nothing worse! Must be a Republican
BigDH28 he needs to edit his comment then 😂 lmao
It's interesting that Floyd Mayweather loved boxing so much as he expressed here, as compared to the legendary Sugar Ray Robinson, who said on video that "I've never enjoyed boxing, it's just a business with me..", saying it was "barbaric", and that he was never a boxing fan (watching other fighters). Great champions are motivated in such different ways.
Damn Floyd answer the question
lmaoooooo that grand rapids water bro.
