Nothing like a pitcher making their MLB debut to get us going again. Poor kid was just in the wrong place wrong time. He seemed solid in the first couple but the pressure of this lineup for a rookie is unreal. Good luck kid.

Braves Monday Update

Offensive performance of the week: Ronald Acuña Jr.
8 for 20 (.400) 2 HRs, 2 RBIs, 6 R, 15 TBs
The MVP front runner kept it up this week with two mammoth HRs. He’s now 2nd in baseball in AVG, 1st in hits, 1st in runs, 2nd in stolen bases and 1st in WAR (2.7).
Pitching performance of the week: Spencer Strider
6.2 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 12 K
It was a bad sign for the weekend when the Braves couldn’t win a Spencer Strider gem. He’s still firmly in the Major League lead for strikeouts at 79. Putting up over 10 strikeouts a start, that should be pretty manageable for him to maintain.
NOTES:
- I’m finding it within myself to not be too heartbroken about getting swept by Toronto. They’ve been our daddies for a handful of years now. We went 0-6 against them in 2021 but we won a title and they were at home.
- Eddie Rosario has a 10 game hit streak. In that time his AVG has gone from .221 to .259.
- Marcell Ozuna is hitting .314/.415/.771 with a 1.186 OPS, 5 HRs and 10 RBIs in the month of May.
- I wrote about this in the offseason, even with them struggling, if you can get 20 HRs and 60 RBIs each from Marcell and Eddie, plus a month each of them carrying the offense then it’s not sunken money at all.
- I’m concerned that Mike Harris might need another IL stint. With him hitting .217 and not stealing bases I’m not positive Hilliard isn’t the better option right now.
- When Austin Riley breaks out, he’s gonna break out.
- The biggest crisis of losing Fried and Wright for a long period of time is that we need to find 100 innings somewhere else in the rotation between now and July. I hate to admit Kyle Muller would be valuable right now.
- I definitely jinxed Rasiel Iglesias last week. That one’s on me.
- As much as I love Soroka he’s not really an option right now. His ERA is 5.47 and his WHIP is 1.58 in 24.2 IP. He’s figuring out what kind of pitcher he’s going to be for the next phase of his career.
- The Braves are hitting an infuriating .228 with RISP this year. 26th in baseball.
- The Dodgers passed the Braves for best record in the NL. That took a 5 game winning streak from the Dodgers and a 4 game losing streak from the Braves.
- I can tell you why the Braves are the best team in the NL with this stat. It’s that the Braves are 3rd in the NL in runs and they are 8th in BABIP. The Nationals are ahead of us. When the ball starts landing for us, we’ll be even scarier.
What’s next:
It’s a challenging stretch in the schedule. 6 games this week. 3 in Texas and 3 at home against Seattle. After that the Dodgers come to town

Big hits from Olson and Riley are a plus. Need to get those guys going again, especially Riley. I expect Olson to come in waves throughout the season but I expect Riley to be somewhat more consistent and a perennial MVP candidate with the bat.

They really needed that, after the bats went ice cold the last 4 games. The starters have been good, not great, and the bullpen has been largely bad so far, but man they were good last night. If the rotation can come back strong and the bullpen gets its stuff together, we'll be talking World Series in 2023. If not, they might get to 85 wins.
